Held Vanuver om Augt 4-11, 1990, Gay Gam III transformed the origally amatrish, small-sle event to an ternatnal sportg petn by brgg outsi of the Uned Stat for the first time. Gay Gam III also changed the cy of Vanuver. Participants, anizers, and visors fondly remember the ways that Vanuver briefly beme a ‘gay cy, ’ and brought people together om different parts of Vanuver’s own 2SLGBTQIA+ muny.

A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE 1990 GAY GAM

Although anizers faced discrimatn and difficulty when securg fundg, event spac, and legimacy, Gay Gam III reprents a moment of historic 2SLGBTQIA+ muny that extends beyond activism and to a celebratn.

Celebratn ’90 Gay Gam III & Cultural Ftival took place Vanuver, Brish Columbia, between Augt 4th to 11th, 1990.

Celebratn ’90 chronicl the fascatg eight-year journey taken by a small group of Vanuver amatr athlet which led to the first Gay Gam to be hosted outsi the Uned Stat. Celebratn ’90: Gay Gam III & Cultural Ftival. In Augt 1982, Betty Baxter — one of Canada’s bt volleyball players — found herself San Francis for the gural Gay Gam.

And for Amerins Tom Wadll, Pl Mart and Mark Brown — the creators of the “gay Olympics” — this was the tentn. By the end of the year, ncrete steps were already beg ma to brg the Gay Gam to Vanuver.

In 1986, at the Gay Gam II held San Francis, Wadll announced that the next gam would be held Vanuver. Planng for the Gay Gam III — or Celebratn ‘90, as was lled — was turng to an immense effort.
