to outdo other crics of <strong>Will Smh</strong>’s slap at the Osrs. “I disliked him before this,” he boasted.</p><p>At 52, McDonagh is no longer an enfant terrible—“maybe jt the terrible,” he quips—but he remas the greatt trash-talker the Amerin theater.</p><p class="paywall">Talkg to him offstage has the pleasur of what he puts on : roguishly unpretent jok, mischievo transgrsns, ocsnal terlus of vulnerabily. Now a seasoned showbiz figure, wh four Tony and four Osr nomatns (cludg one w at the Amy Awards for bt live-actn short film), McDonagh isn’t merely spoutg off. Two years later, ’s back, now wh <strong>Dan Stevens</strong> <a href=">replaced</a> by <strong>Alfie Allen</strong> om <em>Game of Thron.</em> When I check wh McDonagh, talkg om London, I asked about that terview March of 2020, a time that now seems like the pot one of his plays right before the big twist that chang everythg. As he tends to do, McDonagh found a darker alternative. “It was jt like a twist at the end of act one and then Ukrae is the twist at the end of act two and then nuclear Holot is right before the fal curta,” he said, flashg a se. “Fgers crossed.”</p><p class="paywall">McDonagh says he’s absolutely bored talkg about COVID, and seems much more ncerned that our prev nversatn was a waste. “Do this mean I have to slag off a whole new set of people?” he asked.</p><p class="has-dropp paywall">Mart McDonagh leaped onto the scene the 1990s, the most flamboyantly celebrated of a gang of precly young, word-dnk Irish playwrights, cludg Conor McPherson and <strong>Mark O’Rowe,</strong> whose visceral dramas seemed more fluenced by Hollywood genre movi than Brish theater. He had the kd of meteoric rise that spir jealoy. Droppg out of school at 16, McDonagh wrote his first seven plays a 10-month creative burst. Many of them were then produced, makg McDonagh the rare dramatist to have four works playg at the Wt End London a sgle season. He was 27.</p><p class="paywall">The plays, cludg two trilogi set ral Ireland, were full of vlence, dnken shenanigans, misanthropic horror and jok. They had a pop energy and athetic that qutned ancient ias about theater. Ever sce Greek tragedians kept vlence offstage, playwrights left the bloodbaths to filmmakers. No one mercial theater wrote better plot twists.</p><p class="paywall">His plays earned rave reviews om prtige media, but they weren’t the only thg that got attentn. McDonagh, who has movie-star good looks and a datg history that has sce clud stars like <strong>Phoebe Waller-Bridge,</strong> smashgly played the role of the glamoroly irreverent playwright. At an awards ceremony 1996, <a href=">as he tells </a>, he was dnkenly talkg to his brother when Sean Connery told him to quiet down. He told him to “fuck off.” The tabloid furor that me om cursg out Jam Bond only burnished his image.</p><p class="paywall">Along wh ntroversy me plenty of cricism that his plays and movi were hollow, even amoral, all flash and no substance. The Tony Award for bt play 2005 <a href=">played out the prs</a> like a battle between an earnt and morally engaged drama (<strong>John Patrick Shanley</strong>’s <em>Doubt</em>) and a sensatnalistic thriller (McDonagh’s <em>The Pillowman</em>). One of the more revealg l om <em>The Pillowman</em> is when the wrer bsh asi moral qutns, argug that the “first duty of a storyteller is to tell a story.” After askg McDonagh if he agre, he says ’s the first duty, but not the only one.</p><p class="paywall">In <em>Hangmen,</em> a play about the executn of an nocent man, and the potential jtice that to the man who did , he set out to say somethg important about pal punishment, but that paralyzed him. “That stopped me for 10 years until I cid to put a load of stupid jok and some plot twists,” he said. “It was always gog to be creepy and weird, wh this subject…and then what you feel about a subject do bubble through if you keep an eye on what you like.”</p><p class="has-dropp paywall">Talkg to McDonagh now you get the sense that he is shadowed by his early succs. Back then, the artist he most often ced as an fluence was David Mamet, whose <em>Amerin Buffalo</em> (wh <strong>Al Paco</strong>) was the first play he saw, and the one he was most equently pared to was Quent Taranto. He rolls his ey at the mentn of both. Asked about Mamet’s late work (before the playwright earned backlash om makg offensive <a href=">ments on Fox News</a> about how teachers “are cled” toward pedophilia), McDonagh gets that hand the okie-jar glt his eye. “How should I put this?” he says before mentng his two early classics. “I love <em>Amerin Buffalo</em> and <em>Glengarry Glen Ross….</em> Let’s be nice and leave at that.”</p><p class="paywall">When asked what he thks of Taranto’s ia of stoppg after 10 movi, he rpond: “I thk he should. He jt went seven too long.” On mentng that Taranto and him both have taken cricism for g a racial slur their work, he terpts adoptg a morally ncerned tone: “He way too much. I e jt the right amount.”</p><p class="paywall">The specter of midlife crisis hovers above McDonagh, who says proudly he will never grow up. In a moment of vulnerabily, he nces that turng 50 was the first birthday he felt uneasy about celebratg. “I rencile myself to the fact that I am never gog to wre the big Ibsen-like play, thank fuck,” he said, but add he do thk about how many plays he has left him.</p><p class="paywall">Durg the panmic, he worked on a movie <em>The Banshe of Inisher,</em> g out October that rn his <em>In Bg</em> stars <strong>Col Farrell</strong> and <strong>Brendan Gleon.</strong> This new work is about iendship and is set a fictnal Ireland town.
