In 2019, Misty Copeland and Calv Royal III danced together <em>Harlequa,</em> a performance that marked the first Amerin Ballet Theatre (ABT) piece led by two Black dancers. And tonight, oppose João Menegsi, Royal will make history once aga <em>Touché.</em> It’s ABT’s first all-male pas ux, a balletic love story starrg two men and a monumental step forward the art form. Choreographed by Christopher Rudd, the piece will make s but this eveng, openg ABT’s <a href=">virtual season</a> wh three other world premier by Gemma Bond, Darrell Grand Moultrie, and Pam Tanowz.</p><p>“Chris lled them Adam and Steve,” says Royal of the uple <em>Touché.</em> More than monstratg Rudd’s wng sense of humor (technilly, the characters aren’t named at all), the signatns “allowed to look at the character as separate om ourselv,” Royal tells me. “This work is so timate, ’s easy to blur the l of who you are as a person outsi of the stud and the character that you portray.” As a love story pairg two male dancers, <em>Touché</em> felt real to Royal, who liv wh his boyiend, Jacek Mysski, a pianist for ABT. “It’s been 10 years sce I joed the pany, and I never thought that I would actually be able to portray a character who was so close to my own life, my own story, and my own journey,” he says.</p><div><div class="ConsumerMarketgUnThemedWrapper-iUTMTf jssHut nsumer-marketg-un nsumer-marketg-un--article-mid-ntent" role="prentatn" aria-hidn="te"><div class="nsumer-marketg-un__slot nsumer-marketg-un__slot--article-mid-ntent nsumer-marketg-un__slot---ntent"></div><div class="journey-un"></div></div></div><p>“This beg a gay work, I wanted to make sure that everyone the st was also gay. He danced for the Alberta Ballet, Carola Ballet, and L Grands Ballets Canadiens Montréal before he mted himself to choreography, and 2015 he found his own dance pany, Ruddur Dance, wh a missn to munite social issu onstage. Last October, ught the attentn of Kev McKenzie, artistic director of Amerin Ballet Theatre, who asked Rudd to create a ballet for ABT’s repertory.</p><div class="Contaer-bkChBi byNLHx"></div><p>“The next day I was watchg dancers take class at Lln Center, onstage at the Koch Theater, and h me that I wanted to e this platform to highlight te gay love,” Rudd says. “I saw the men dance across the stage, and I realized this was actually the perfect place to explore this work.” A year earlier, he had choreographed a male-female pas ux for his own pany, and s “overenthiastic” rponse was all the enuragement he need to create a work that more closely rembled his own love stori.</p><div data-attr-viewport-monor="le-recirc" class="le-recirc-wrapper le-recirc-observer-target-1 viewport-monor-anchor"></div><p>To st <em>Touché</em> wh gay dancers, Rudd turned to Instagram, bg through profil of dancers for evince of their romantic liv. Before the panmic, he was gearg up to but as Romeo oppose Misty Copeland’s Juliet; and September, after 10 years wh the pany, Royal beme the send Black male prcipal dance ABT’s history. “It me like a light a very dark and nfg time that we were all tryg to navigate,” he says of the announcement. Strikgly graceful onstage, he liv his private life gently, practicg yoga and pilat and spendg his off-hours reuntg all journals. “I thk I’ve [filled] 50 or so notebooks sce I first moved to New York,” he tells me. tts—to laki bs where they uld dance isolatn. Rudd, Bond, Moultrie, and Tanowz were all on hand to teach the dancers the ballets at the center of tonight’s virtual event. “It was so overwhelmg jt to be around people aga such close proximy, and to take class aga,” says Royal. “It was emotnal on so many levels.”</p><p>This format of ballet creatn is novel on all onts. Beyond the settg, Royal explas, was the pace: Whereas the lead-up to a regular season openg, when Royal would be rehearsg for six or so ballets, this time he had jt one. The opportuny allowed him, and Rudd and Menegsi, to get timately acquated wh <em>Touché</em> and mediate on the characters and the dancers’ own relatnships to the piece. Such nsiratns are rarely afford ballet.</p><p>Before Rudd tght his choreography, he spent a week wh his two dancers, listeng and learng om them. “We would spend full days workg on character velopment,” Royal says, “stg and talkg about our journeys as dancers; as openly gay men the ballet world, and what that experience was like; what our g out experienc were like; how we sort of navigated the challeng; and when we felt like we fally embraced ourselv, who we are, and what we stand for.” </p><figure class="AssetEmbedWrapper-eVDQiB byBkf asset-embed"><div Like a butterfly’s metamorphosis, Rudd’s piece spans the stag of a gay man’s journey to self-acceptance—om piercg uncertaty to unfortable enunters to peace wh one's own’s sk. I ask Royal if he found a specific moment of the dance the most impactful. He rponds: “There’s an -between moment whout any dancg. It’s between the first and send movement, [when] my character first disvers that he’s not alone this, and that there’s this other person who has been on this whole other journey. It’s this silent and still moment where we’re sheddg our layers, the baggage that we once had, and we are standg face-to-face, not sure what the future holds. But there’s this feelg of hope and what thgs uld be. And that moment, for me, jt says all.”</p><p>Whout givg too much of the piece away, there’s a kiss—the first ABT-missned kiss between two men. And to treat this productn as Hollywood and Broadway might, an timacy director, Sarah Lozoff, was brought on board.</p><p>“I always requted munitn wh my artists, but the culture of dance tells lerally to keep our mouths shut. It is an art form which language is not required, so dancers are traed to not speak,” says Rudd. “[Sarah and I] vised a plan to e timacy directn to start makg cultural shifts dance, pecially when the works are ntroversial and go eply to a subject matter that the artists themselv had to al wh life.”</p><div data-attr-viewport-monor="le-recirc" class="le-recirc-wrapper le-recirc-observer-target-2 viewport-monor-anchor"></div><p>For Lozoff, timacy directn is not jt about creasg the believabily of kissg or simulated sex scene between characters. “It’s also about takg re of artists to make sure that they know they have agency, that their voic matter,” she says.</p><p>As Royal tells me, he feels seen and heard, and he’s aware of the signifince of all. Of beg partnered wh another man, he says, “I‘ve always hoped for this, [but] I didn’t thk that would happen so soon.”</p><p>It’s happeng tonight. Rudd says he’ll be watchg like “a ndidate for office watchg the numbers e .... I did all I uld to make worthwhile and valid and as meangful as I uld. Now the voters have to vote and the people have to accept .” As for Royal, he says he’s “exced to see the fal product, but I know that the experience alone was so fulfillg for me.
