The “stuff” qutn refers to the explos of a man named Gerald Foos, who, the 1960s, bought and rigged up a motel suburban Colorado so that he uld spy on guts om an attic twalk through the ceilg vents. Foos wrote to Tale 1980 wh his story, gusg rrectly that would pique the tert of the wrer, who had ma a name for himself as a kd of unrver reporter the jungl of ee love wh his book <em>Thy Neighbor’s Wife.</em> But Foos was unwillg to reveal himself to be “the voyr,” so Tale abandoned the ia, left behd his many archiv the basement of his Upper East Si townhoe.</p><p><em>Voyr</em> starts 2013, when Tale and Foos are back touch, wh the latter ready to e forward on the rerd and the former ready to pick up the thread. Immediately, the film ti the figur of Tale and Foos together—or, rather, Tale ti himself to the voyr, explicly, when he says matter-of-factly, “I’m a voyr myself.” He giv a tour of his obssive archiv, materials kept box vered llag wh headl and imag om articl on and by Tale. And was exposed that one of the juicit tidbs of Tale’s book, when Foos wns a man strangle a woman a room below 1977, has strikg siari to a crime that occurred a motel a few away, but no rerds uld be found to rroborate the event that Foos scribed. The latter ia is closer to what directors Myl Kane and Josh Koury got out of <em>Voyr,</em> which begs as a return to the spotlight for Tale, who visibly brims wh excement and speratn for rurgent relevance at 81, and ends as a nfed, regrettable illtratn of two men’s unstoppable egos. If only the filmmakers weren’t jt as ught up the need for a good story as Foos and Tale are.</p><div class="AdWrapper-dQtivb fZrssQ ad ad---ntent"><div class="ad__slot ad__slot---ntent" data-no-id="dhhuqi"></div></div><p>“I would have done anythg for the story; I sold my soul,” Tale says of wrg <em>Thy Neighbor’s Wife,</em> and s effects on his wife, the publisher Nan Tale, and his children. The same impulse is shared by the entire “Voyr” project—the article, book, and documentary—which tras so heavily on lurid tails (which aren’t even that lurid) that giv up any artistic or tellectual center. In hdsight, some errors are glargly obv: There are some obv and damng genr dynamics at work here, between Gay and Nan and between Foos and his wife, Ana, but Kane and Koury do ltle to lve to the sexual polics that make Foos’s motel an enavor of masculy, and an credibly vlatg and disturbg one at that. Instead, they glamorize both Foos’s story and Tale’s storytellg. When Foos scrib the first time he watched a woman, his nt, undrs, he the phrase “the wdow beckong,” the poetics of which Tale go gaga over. “Beckong wdow is perfect,” he exclaims. “She had big boobs,” Foos ntu, which gets an “Oh, my god” out of Tale—’s like watchg two middle schoolers share a <em>Playboy</em>. As the film go on, more and more people appear to fend <em>Voyr</em> as a lerary enavor, om Tale’s book publisher to his edor at <em>The New Yorker.</em> They even unver the discrepanci later revealed by <em>The Washgton Post,</em> but are unterred. A few mentns of the fact that most people who stayed the motel are likely ad (qutnable, given that Foos is still alive) serve to amelrate any guilt or regret.
