I was recently told about two former publishg lleagu of Mallory’s who lled him after he didn’t show up for a meetg. Mallory said that he was at home, takg re of someone’s dog. He’d survived earlier bouts wh ncer, but now a doctor had told him that a tumor would kill him by the age of forty. He seemed to be sayg that ncer—already intified and unequivolly fatal—would allow him to live for almost another . The claim sounds more like a gobl’s curse than like a prognosis, but Mallory was persuasive; the lleague who was ially supportive of him recently said, wh a shake of the head, “Y, I believed that.”

Some -workers wept after hearg the news. For a while, he wore a baseball p, even doors, which was thought to hi hair loss om chemotherapy. Before the office closed for Christmas 2011, Mallory said that, as his parents had no tert seeg him, he would stead make an exploratory vis to the facili of Dignas, the assisted-ath nonprof based Swzerland. The rival C.E.O. told Mackenzie that there had been no such offer. (Mackenzie cled to ment. The rival C.E.O. did not reply to requts for ment.) When challenged at Ltle, Brown, Mallory claimed that the rival C.E.O. was lyg, reprisal for Mallory’s havg once rejected a sexual proposn.

In Augt, 2012, Mallory left Ltle, Brown. The terms of his parture are vered by a nondisclosure agreement. Everythg now looked doubtful, “even to the extent of ‘Do his fay exist?’ and ‘Is he even lled Dan Mallory?’ ”

Mallory was not fired. This fact pots to the strength of employee protectns the U.K.—’s hard to prove the absence of a job offer—but also, perhaps, to a sense of embarrassment and dread. The prospect of Mallory’s public antagonism was evintly alarmg: Ltle, Brown was nsc of the risks of “a fantasist walkg around tellg li,” an employee at the pany told me. Another source ma a jokg reference to “The Talented Mr. Ripley”: “He uld e at me wh an axe. This announcement surprised the acquatanc of Mallory’s who spoke to me.
