To be sure is a solid bgraphy of the French naturalist and historian Cld Gay, but is also a study of the thor, Carlos Stuardo Ortiz, and a llectn of documents alg wh Gay’s life and work.
Feliú voted more than a hundred pag to a short bgraphy of his iend and lleague, Stuardo, who died 1962, and almost a one-hundred page examatn of Gay’s role as an historian. In the send volume Feliú add another lengthy study on Gay’s life based on his rrponnce.

Especially tertg is Stuardo’s treatment of the support given by the young Chilean natn to Gay his scientific and historgraphic rearch. Stipends, paid out over more than a , enabled Gay to travel throughout Chile and even to return to Europe for a vis to the Archiv of the Indi Seville.
Both Stuardo and Feliú agree, however, that Gay’s twenty-four volume, Historia físi y políti Chile, which rulted om the ernment support, was an important ntributn to Chilean science and letters and well worth the money spent. Feliú and Stuardo also exame the role of Gay Chile’s neteenth-century historgraphic velopment.
