There was no such thg as a “gay club” when I was at school.

” He ntrasts the matury wh which today’s teenagers discs genr and sexualy wh his own g-of-age a ral town Llnshire “where ‘gay’ wasn’t even ed as a slur – I grew up total ignorance of LGBT+ people, partly bee of sectn 28 [the legislatn enacted 1988 to “prohib the promotn of homosexualy” by lol thori; was abolished only 2003]. You n watch certa media and get the imprsn that they always end up ad at the end of the story, there’s homophobic attacks and ’s all misery.

I will say I still prefer Heartbreak Boys and You're the One That I Want over Gay Club!, but only bee I'm partial to fluffier - but jt as full of heart - reads. Obvly I went to Gay Club!
WELCOME TO GAY CLUB! WH SIMON JAM GREEN
I love Simon Jam Green’s books and I had to read Gay Club! Like all of Simon Jam Green’s Orión, Gay Club! 1, 405 reviews320 followersShelved as 'did-not-fish'October 30, 2022DNF at page 100 - I'm so sad to DNF this bee the ver is so pretty and sparkly and GAY but the characters are all so obnox and annoyg, I jt n't.
Gay Club is a b different than Simon's prev YA novels. While books like Alex Wonrland and Noah Can't Even have the ma character's fluffy relatnship ont and center, Gay Club, Barney's romantic terts are not the ma drive of the story is about the road so far and the road ahead for LGBT people schools, prented through the unexpected "openg" of Barney's school LGBT Society electn to the entire stunt body. Simon's tramark humor, sarsm and hilar teen shennanigans meet more ser topics like passive-agrsive homophobia, schools terg to the screams of homophobic parents, vasn of privacy and virtue school electn was hilar, wh all the petty backstabbgs, trite plans and grand gtur.
I loved the surprise meo of a character om Noah Can't Even, and I ckled at Simon's subtle dig at "Amerin gay teens on TV are f and look 20", he uldn't have timed better (the also Brish adaptatn of Heartstopper is praised for avoidg this pfall) story had s twists, and although touched heavier topics than we're ed to om Simon Jam Green books, never beme dark or sad; stead the characters e the obstacl to punch back harr, and fight wh even more you like gay rom-s and dramas, you're gonna love Gay Club and all of Simon's books! Ntemporary gay m-m-romance 1, 223 reviews38 followersMay 23, 2022"Hoy gay do I need to be... Jt know that, there is a sex sndal, natnal embarrassment, betrayal, homophobia and most importantly part stayed wh me, and is the part where Danny nonted Barney askg about how gay one needs to be to be a part of the society.

GAY CLUB!
Wh a msy and awkward MC Barney, GAY CLUB!
This book is melodramatic, backstabbg, heartfelt, spirg, and oh so gay ?It’s really rehg to read a YA book set firmly Bra, and feels pretty Brish. There is great reprentatn: Barney is our gay ma character; Gee is trans; Maya is a rather stereotypil angry lbian; and Danny was a very tertg character who is a straight ally and part of the society.

There is a good al of talk – helpful, if nfg, talk – about labels, and why the term “Gay Club” reprents erasure as much as reprents a safe space. Even wh moments of sadns and realism, Gay Club! Full of chaos and disasters, but wh an enormo heart, Gay Club!
GAY CLUB!
On a more ser note, Gay Club! Books like this give me hope that school life for future sendary school kids will be better, but if that's to be the se, then adults also need to advote for the teens and enurage books like Gay Club!, which never shi away om nuanced and sensive, thoughtful discsn about clivy, equaly, and celebratg everyone for who they are. Content warngs: homophobic language and bullyg, offset by solidary and iendship.
GAY CLUB!
Gay Club! I hope this book featur every sendary school library, and enurag and supports their very own Gay Clubs to show teenagers today - you're never alone, and is perfectly okay to be gay (or trans or pan or anythg you bloody well want). It featur some important and prent issu such as non clive and abysmal sex ctn, generatnal homophobia and the unwrten prsure to e out rather then jt be.
I’m so very glad that books like #GayClub!
