Whether the artist would or would not be prent was the qutn that occupied the mds of all the people volved, the days precedg the highly publicized and eagerly anticipated vernissage of the work of Robert Mapplethorpe, the photographer who took his art to the outer lims of his own personal sexual experience, at the Whney last July.</p><p>For nearly two years the mors of Robert Mapplethorpe’s illns had been whispered the New York art and social circl which he moved as a celebrated and somewhat notor figure. The ath January 1987 of the New York aristocrat and llector Sam Wagstaff of AIDS had brought the matter of Mapplethorpe’s illns wh the same disease out to the open. Mapplethorpe, the prcipal heror of Sam Wagstaff’s fortune, had once been Wagstaff’s lover and later, for years, his great and good iend. The herance, believed to be the neighborhood of $7 ln—some say more, pendg on the value of his art and silver llectns—ma the already much-talked-about Mapplethorpe, a famed figure of the night the herworld of New York, even more talked about, pecially when the will was ntted by the sister of Sam Wagstaff, Mrs. Thomas Jefferson IV of New York. Mapplethorpe has never avoid publicy; ed, he has refully nurtured his celebry sce his work first me to public notice the mid-seventi.</p><p class="paywall">That summer night at the Whney Mm, there were sighs of relief when he did arrive for the openg, havg been released om St. Vcent’s Hospal only days before. He was a wheelchair, surround by members of his entourage, rryg a ne wh a ath’s-head top and wearg a stylish dner jacket and black velvet slippers wh his ials embroired gold on them—a vastly different uniform om the black leather gear that had bee his tramark. For those who had not seen the once handsome figure some time, the terratn of his health and physil appearance was apparent and shockg. His hair looked wispy. His th neck protd om the wg llar of his dner shirt like a tortoise’s om s shell. But even ill, he was a man who mand attentn, and who expected . A groupg of furnure had been placed the center of the send of the four galleri where the exhibn was hung, and there he sat, wh his ner circle attendance, receivg the homage of his iends and admirers, a plex ol of swells and eaks, famo and unknown, that mak up the world of Robert Mapplethorpe. His ey, dartg about, missed nothg. He nodd his head and sed, speakg a voice barely above a whisper. “It’s a wonrful night,” person after person said to him, and he agreed. He was enjoyg himself immensely. On the wall facg him hung <em>Jim and Tom, Ssalo</em>, his 1977–78 triptych of two men black leather, adorned wh the acutrements of sadomasochistic bondage and torture. In the photographs, Jim, the master, is uratg to the willg, even eager, mouth of Tom, the tied-up slave. “Marvelo,” said one after another of the fashnable crowd as they surveyed the work. “Surreal” was the word that me to my md.</p><div class="Contaer-bkChBi byNLHx"></div><p class="paywall">However much you may have heard that this exhibn was not a shocker, believe me, was a shocker. Robert Mapplethorpe was scribed by everyone I terviewed as the man who had taken the sexual experience to the lims his work, a documentarian of the homoerotic life the 1970s at s most excsive, rultg, possibly, the very plague that was killg s rerr. Even his floral photographs are erotic; as crics have poted out, he mak que clear that flowers are the sexual ans of plants. But the crowds that poured that night, and kept pourg for the followg three months that the exhibn remaed up, had not e jt to see the still lif of stark flowers, or the portras of bejeweled and elegant ladi of society, like Carola Herrera and Prcs Gloria von Thurn und Taxis and Paloma Pisso, and of artist iends, like David Hockney and Louise Nevelson and Willem Koong, which are also very much a part of Mapplethorpe’s ovre. They had e to see the sexually load pictur, eed of all hibns, that were hangg si by si wh the above the galleri of the Whney, like the startlg <em>Man Polyter Su,</em> which an elephante-size black penis simply hangs out of the unzipped fly of a man whose head is cropped, or the even more startlg <em>Marty and Veroni,</em> which Marty mak oral love to a stockged and girdled Veroni, whose upper body is cropped off at her bare breasts. Mapplethorpe was a participant the dark world he photographed, not a voyr, a pot he ma clear by allowg a self-portra showg his rectum—rarely nsired to be one of the body’s bety spots—to be hung on the wall of the mm, wh a bull-whip up . The Mapplethorpe sexual fluence is so great that the otherwise scholarly troductn to the talogue of the show, Richard Marshall, an associate curator of the Whney, ma reference to this same photograph as the “<em>Self Portra</em> wh a whip serted his ass.” That night, and on two subsequent viss to the exhibn, I watched the reactns of the viewers to the more graphilly sexual pictur. They went om I-n’t-believe-what-I’m-seeg-on-the-walls-of-the-Whney-Mm looks to nudg and tters, to nervo, furtive glanc to the left and right to see if was safe to really move and peer, and, fally, to The money’s g , though. I’m makg more money now than I’ve ever ma before.”</p><p class="paywall">Today Mapplethorpe charg $10,000 for a stg. His one-of-a-kd pictur sell for an average of $20,000 each. A Mapplethorpe prt om the Robert Miller Gallery, his aler New York, starts at $5,000.</p><p class="paywall">“I seem to read somethg about you every day the prs,” I said.</p><p class="paywall">“I do love publicy,” he replied. “Good publicy.”</p><p class="has-dropp paywall">In a sense, Sam Wagstaff created Robert Mapplethorpe, but anyone who knows Robert Mapplethorpe will tell you that he was ready and wag to be created. They met over the telephone when Mapplethorpe was twenty-five years old and Sam was fifty. “Are you the shy pornographer?” Wagstaff asked when he telephoned him. Robert had heard of Sam before the ll. “Everyone said there was a person the art world I should meet. So Sam me over to look at my etchgs, so to speak.”</p><p class="paywall">At that time the totally unknown Mapplethorpe was sharg an apartment Brooklyn wh the then totally unknown poet and later rock ’n’ roll star Patti Smh, who has remaed one of his clost iends. Although he was, his own words, “dog photographs of sexualy” wh a Polaroid mera back then, he did not yet nsir himself a photographer. The Polaroid mera had been purchased for him by John McKendry, the curator of prts and photographs at the Metropolan Mm. Mapplethorpe had bee a sort of adopted son to McKendry and his wife, Maxe la Falaise, the dghter of the English portra pater Sir Oswald Birley, and was taken about by them to the smart circl of people who later beme his iends and patrons. Wagstaff and Mapplethorpe beme posive fluenc on each other’s liv. The handsome and patrician Wagstaff, who graduated om Yale and once worked advertisg, had long sce moved away om the Upper East Si and New York society world of his birth to the bohemian world downtown. A former mm curator, he had bee more and more of a reclive figure, volved wh a group voted to self-fulfillment lled Ari, and sometim, acrdg to Mapplethorpe, observg whole days of silence. Wagstaff enuraged Mapplethorpe his photography, and Mapplethorpe persuad Wagstaff to start llectg photographs. “He beme obssed wh photography,” said Mapplethorpe. “He bought wh a vengeance. It went beyond anythg I imaged. Through him, I started lookg at photographs a much more ser way. I got to know alers. I went wh him when he was buyg thgs. It was a great tn, although I had my own visn right om the begng. If you look at my early Polaroids, the style was then what I have now.”</p><p class="has-dropp paywall">Richard Marshall stat his troductn the talogue that Mapplethorpe “did not feel a strong iologil mment to photography; rather simply beme the medium that uld bt nvey his statement.” Explag this, Marshall said, “He wasn’t a photographer who found his subject. He took up the mera to play wh, and found that was what he was lookg for.”</p><p class="paywall">Barbara Jakobson, who was one of Mapplethorpe’s first avid supporters as well as an old iend of Wagstaff’s, said, “When I bee enthiastic about an artist, I do not keep my mouth shut. Wh five mut the jungle dms are beatg. I like to see people I admire succeed. That was when our iendship started. Robert really saved Sam Wagstaff’s life. At the begng of the seventi, anyone who knew Sam said that he was virtually a recle. Robert is the one who got him terted llectg photography. Sam revolutnized the way we look at photographs. When he sold his llectn to the Getty Mm, his posn photography was forever assured.”</p><p class="paywall">Mapplethorpe do not stt his acknowledgment of his late iend’s patronage. “I was a real hippie. Sam was a real hippie too. Fancially he certaly helped me. He was very genero. We never actually lived together. I had a loft on Bond Street which he bought for me. He had a loft on Bond Street too. We were lovers as well. I thk if you’re gog to do a story, you should get all the facts. It lasted a uple of years. Then we beme bt iends. I even troduced him to Jam Nelson, who beme his boyiend after me.” He psed before he add, “He’s sick at this pot too.”</p><p class="paywall">“Wh AIDS?”</p><div data-attr-viewport-monor="le-recirc" class="le-recirc-wrapper le-recirc-observer-target-2 viewport-monor-anchor"></div><p class="paywall">“Y. He’s gog through all his money. He’s spendg like crazy. He rents an apartment at Number One Fifth Avenue, where he and Sam lived, but Sam’s apartment that buildg has been sold.”</p><p class="paywall">Shortly after we talked, Jim Nelson died. Nelson, a former hairstylist for the televisn soap opera <em>All My Children,</em> hered 25 percent of Wagstaff’s riduary tate, and Mapplethorpe hered 75 percent. Nelson, aware that he was dyg, wanted his money immediately, so Mapplethorpe, through their lawyers, bought out Nelson’s share. As Nelson’s life neared s end, he fulfilled a long-held dream and rented two su on the <em>Queen Elizabeth 2,</em> one for himself and one for a pann, and sailed to England, where he stayed a sue at the Rz Hotel, and then took the Conr back to New York. He spent the last day of his life makg up a list of people he wanted to be notified of his ath and another list of people he did not want to be notified, one of the beg the person who told me this Sam was his sugar daddy a way.”</p><p class="paywall">Most of Wagstaff’s money me om his stepfather, Donald Newhall, who left him and his sister shar of the Newhall Land and Farmg Company California, which later went public. Over the years, Wagstaff sold off some of his shar to buy his art, photography, and silver llectns. In his will he left bequts of $100,000 each to the Mm of Morn Art, the Metropolan Mm, and the New York Public Library, as well as $10,000 and the fay silver to his sister, Mrs. Jefferson, and $10,000 to each of her three children.</p><p class="paywall">“She’s enormoly rich,” said Mapplethorpe about Mrs. Jefferson. “She didn’t need the money.”</p><p class="paywall">“Then why did she ntt the will?”</p><p class="paywall">Mapplethorpe shgged. “She need entertament,” he said. If there is a cisn to be ma, he unrstands the issu and vot the right way.”</p><p class="has-dropp paywall">Although I had known Sam Wagstaff for years, my ntact wh Robert Mapplethorpe was mimal, no more than an acquatanchip, so I was surprised when he asked for me to wre this article, and more surprised when he asked to photograph me. Two years ago, right after Sam Wagstaff died, when the mors of ligatn between his fay and his heir over his will were rampant, I had thought of wrg an article on the subject for this magaze. Mapplethorpe, however, let be known through his great iend Suzie Frankfurt, the sociale terr rator, that he did not wish me to wre such a piece, and I immediately sisted. Later I saw him at the memorial service for Sam that was held at the Metropolan Mm. Already ill himself, he ma a pot of thankg me for not wrg the article.</p><p class="paywall">I had met Mapplethorpe for the first time several years earlier, at a dner given by the Earl of Warwick at his New York apartment. Although Mapplethorpe was then famo as a photographer, the celebry that was so much a part of his persona was due equally to his reputatn as a leadg figure the sadomasochistic subculture of New York. Ined, he was the subject of endls stori volvg dark bars and black men and bizarre behavr of the bondage and domatn variety. He arrived late for the dner, drsed for the post-dner-party part of his night black leather, and beme no time the foc of attentn and unqutnably the star of Lord Warwick’s party. He was at ease his surroundgs and, surprisg to me, up on the latt gossip of the English smart set, tellg stori which Guns and Tennant nam abound. When ffee was served, he took some marijuana and a package of papers out of his pocket, rolled a jot, l , haled eply, all the time ntug a story he was tellg, and passed the jot to the person on his right. It was not a marijuana-smokg group, and the jot was cled and passed on by each person to the next, except for one gut who, gamely, took a few tok and then passed out at the table, after sayg, “Strong stuff.” Unperturbed, Mapplethorpe ntued talkg until was time for his ex. After he was gone, those who remaed talked about him.</p><p class="has-dropp paywall">Like everythg else about Robert Mapplethorpe, the stud where he now liv and works on a major crosstown street the Chelsea sectn of New York, which was also purchased for him by Wagstaff, is enormoly stylish and handsomely done. In 1988 was photographed by <em>HG</em> magaze, and Mart Filler wrote the acpanyg text, “Mapplethorpe’s rooms revel the pleasur of art for art’s sake and renfirm his athetic genealogy a direct le of scent om Osr Wil and Aubrey Beardsley through Christian Bérard and Jean Cocte.” There are thgs to look at every directn, a mélange of objects and pictur, but everythg has s place. Orr and rtrat prevail. “You create your own world,” said Mapplethorpe. “The one that I want to live is very precise, very ntrolled.” It fs wh his personaly that he pays his bills stantly on receivg them.</p><p class="paywall">Each time we met, we sat a different area. In the back stg room of the floor-through loft space, the wdows have elegant brown-black taffeta tieback curtas signed by Suzie Frankfurt, which seem both ngo and not at all ngo. Frankfurt, who matas a plited iendship wh him, said, “Robert liv the middle of a ntradictn—part altar boy and part leather bar.” That day he was wearg a black drsg gown om Gianni Versace, the Italian signer, and his black velvet slippers.</p><p class="paywall">At one pot he went to a paroxysm of ughg, and om the look he gave me I realized he didn’t want me to see him like that. “Would you exce me for a mute,” he said. I got up and went to another part of the apartment until he lled me back.</p><p class="paywall">“Oh, I’m so sick,” he said. “I’ve been throwg up all night. The nights are awful.”</p><p class="paywall">“When did you first know you had AIDS?” I asked.</p><p class="paywall">“It was diagnosed as AIDS two years ago October.”</p><p class="paywall">“Did you spect beforehand that you had ?”</p><div data-attr-viewport-monor="le-recirc" class="le-recirc-wrapper le-recirc-observer-target-4 viewport-monor-anchor"></div><p class="paywall">“Every faggot spects beforehand.”</p><p class="paywall">He said that he had two nurs on twelve-hour shifts that st him a thoand dollars a day. “But I’m lucky. I have surance.” He has been on AZT almost om the begng. He worri nstantly about iends who are ls fortunate, specifilly his black iends. In a nversatn wh Marli Black, who assembled the Rivenll Collectn of morn art and photography, which ntas the largt selectn of Mapplethorpe’s work the world, he once said, “At some pot I started photographg black men. It was an area that hadn’t been explored extensively. If you went through the history of nu male photography, there were very few black subjects. I found that I uld take pictur of black men that were so subtle, and the form was so photographil.” Now, mg on that, he said, “Most of the blacks don’t have surance and therefore n’t afford AZT. They all died quickly, the blacks. If I go through my <em>Black Book,</em> half of them are ad.”</p><p class="has-dropp paywall">When I sat for him to be photographed, I was nervo, even though he had asked me to s. It was on a day that he was not feelg well. He had not slept the night before. He ughed a great al. His sk was very pale. We sat on a sofa and talked while Brian English, his assistant, set up the mera and chair where I would s for the picture. Although ill, Mapplethorpe kept workg most days. He showed me pictur he had taken a day or two before of the three-year-old dghter of the actrs San Sarandon, and he had arranged to photograph Carola Herrera, the drs signer, as soon as he was fished wh me. I was talkg about anythg I uld thk of, mostly about people we both knew, to postpone the evable. Fally, I told him I was nervo. “Why?” he asked. “I jt am,” I said. “Don’t be,” he said quietly. I was stck as always by his grace and manners, which seemed such a ntradictn to the image most people have of Robert Mapplethorpe. Fally Brian placed me the chair, and Robert got up and walked very slowly over to where the Hasselblad mera was set up. He looked the viewfr. He asked Brian to move a light. He ma an adjtment on a lens openg. “Look to the left,” he said. “Keep your head there. Look back toward me wh your ey.” He was charge.</p><p class="paywall">Another time, I remarked that he was lookg better. He told me that he was fally able to eat somethg lled TPN, a totally nutr substance which gave him 2,400 lori a day. “I don’t actually eat. I’m fed mostly by tube. If I hadn’t found this, I’d be ad by now. I uldn’t keep any food down.” And then he said a le I heard him say over and over. “This disease is hio.”</p><p class="paywall">“My biggt problem now is walkg. I have nropathy, like when your foot’s asleep. It’s nstant. It’s my hands too. If weren’t for that, I’d go out.” His ey moved toward the wdow. “I’d like to go to Central Park to see the new zoo. And I’d like to go back to the Whney to see the show. I hear there are l of people to see .”</p><p class="has-dropp paywall">He was born a middle-class suburban neighborhood lled Floral Park, which is on the edge of Queens, New York, the third of six children a Catholic fay of English, German, and Irish extractn. His mother is a hoewife. His father do electril work. He went to a public school Floral Park, but he would have preferred to go to the Catholic school, which his younger brothers went to. Although he now says that Floral Park was a perfect place for his parents to raise a fay, early yearngs nonnformist directns brought his fay life to a halt. “I wanted to have the eedom to do what I wanted to do. The only way to do that was to break away. I didn’t want to have to worry about what my parents thought. When I was sixteen, I went to llege at the Pratt Instute. That was when I began to live elsewhere.”</p><p class="paywall">Except for his brother Edward, the youngt of the six, who was at the stud each time I was there, he has not been close to his fay for years, although he said that they are “closer sce I told them I was sick, which was not too long ago.”</p><p class="paywall">“Did your parents e to see your show at the Whney?” I asked him.</p><p class="paywall">He shook his head no. “They tend to,” he said. Then he add, “But they have e to see me here.”</p><p class="paywall">While still school, he began livg wh Patti Smh, whom he met Brooklyn. Maxe la Falaise McKendry remembered that when Robert first met Smh he kicked a hole through om his apartment to hers so that they uld munite better. “Patti and I built on each other’s nfince. We were never jealo of each other’s work. We spired each other. She beme regnized first. Then she had a rerd ntract. She phed ahead. There was a parallel happeng to each reer.” Patti Smh, who is now married wh two children, liv Detro. “We talk to each other all the time,” he said.</p><p class="has-dropp paywall">‘S&M is a certa percentage of Robert’s work, and necsary to show to give a reprentatn of his work,” said Richard Marshall. He told me that when they put the exhibn together there had never been any ia of censorship, or any rervatn about cludg offensive material, although, he add, “there are some stronger pictur which do exist, some more explicly graphic pictur, the, uh, peratn of the arm.” What Marshall was referrg to was what Mapplethorpe lls his fist-fuckg file. “Call Suzanne,” he said to me, speakg of his lovely young secretary, Suzanne Donaldson, “and ask her, if you want to see the fist-fuckg file, or the vio of me havg my t pierced.” When certa of the photographs were shown at an art gallery Madrid, the gallery owner, who has sce died of AIDS, was sent to jail.</p><p class="paywall">“There were some letters of prott about the show, but not great numbers at all,” said Marshall. “We did put up signs three or four lotns, warng parents that the show might not be applible for children.”</p><div data-attr-viewport-monor="le-recirc" class="le-recirc-wrapper le-recirc-observer-target-5 viewport-monor-anchor"></div><p class="paywall">Flora Biddle ncurs. “I went on a tour of the show the night before opened wh the Whney Circle, which is the hight tegory of membership. Richard Marshall talked about the pictur to the group, alg wh the pictur you uld ll the most sexual, and spoke betifully about them. The people the Circle were attentive and open to them. Afterwards, people me up and said they thought was so wonrful the Whney was hangg this show.”</p><p class="has-dropp paywall">Barbara Jakobson said, “Sometim I’d drive downtown my yellow Volkswagen to have dner wh Robert. Then, later, I’d drop him off at the Me-shaft, or one of those plac. God forbid he be seen havg a woman drop him off, so I’d leave him a block away. I had no sire to see si, but I once asked Robert to scribe what was like, an archectural way. He said there were plac of rual. He told me how the rooms were divid, whout tellg me what actually went on. Once he showed me a sadomasochistic photograph. I said to him, ‘I n’t believe that a human beg would allow this to be done.’ He replied, ‘The person who had done wanted to be done. Bis, he heals quickly.’ Robert would fd the people who enjoyed this. The tertg part is that they posed for him.”</p><p class="paywall">When I discsed this nversatn wh Mapplethorpe, he said, “I went to the Eagl Nt and the Spike to fd mols. Or I’d meet people om referrals. They’d hear you were good at such and such a thg, and ll. I was more to the experience than the photography. The on I thought were extraordary enough, or the on I related to, I’d eventually photograph.”</p><p class="paywall">“Were dgs volved?”</p><p class="paywall">“Oh, y. I’ve certaly had my share of dg experienc, but I don’t need dgs to take pictur. They get the way. However, dgs certaly played a big factor sex at that time. MDA was a big dg all this. It’s somewhere between e and acid.</p><p class="paywall">“Most of the people S&M were proud of what they were dog. It was givg pleasure to one another. It was not about hurtg. It was sort of an art. Certaly there were people who were to btaly, but that wasn’t my take. For me, was about two people havg a simultaneo asm. It was pleasure, even though looked paful.</p><p class="paywall">“Dog thgs to people who don’t want done to them is not sexy to me. The people my pictur were dog bee they wanted to. No one was forced to .</p><p class="paywall">“For me S&M means sex and magic, not sadomasochism. It was all about tst.”</p><p class="paywall">“If his S&M work were heterosexual, wouldn’t be acceptable,” I was told by a world-famo photographer who, bee of Mapplethorpe’s illns, did not wish to be quoted by name makg cril remarks about him. “The smart society that has accepted this work has done so bee is so far removed om their own liv.”</p><div data-attr-viewport-monor="le-recirc" class="le-recirc-wrapper le-recirc-observer-target-6 viewport-monor-anchor"></div><p class="paywall">Even before the AIDS crisis, though, Mapplethorpe had begun to move away om the S&M scene as subject matter for his photography. One of his clost associat said to me, “Robert had gotten more and more away om beg a downtown personaly. He had been observg the uptown life for some time, and I thk he wanted to bee a society photographer. Once, leavg someone’s town hoe on the Upper East Si, he said, ‘I wouldn’t md livg like that.’”</p><p class="paywall">Carola Herrera, the subject of one of Mapplethorpe’s earlit and most celebrated society portras, has known him for years, “long before he was famo.” They met on the island of Mtique the Caribbean the early 1970s, when Herrera and her hband were guts of Prcs Margaret, and Mapplethorpe, along wh his English iend Cathere Tennant, was a gut of Tennant’s brother Col, who is now Lord Glennner. Tennant remembers Mapplethorpe at the time wearg more ivory bracelets up his arms than the rebell Nancy Cunard wore the famo portra Cecil Beaton took of her 1927. When Mapplethorpe took Herrera’s picture, a hotel room New York, he had only a mimum of photographic equipment and no assistant. Herrera’s hband, Realdo, had to hold the silver umbrella reflector for him. Mapplethorpe photographed Herrera wearg a hat and pearls, agast a blank ground, and sce then his style social portraure has remaed as stark as his nu figur, mirrorg the sculptural fluence of Man Ray more than the ethereal settgs of Cecil Beaton.</p><p class="has-dropp paywall">On Friday eveng, November 4, of last year, Robert Mapplethorpe gave a large cktail party at his stud to celebrate his forty-send birthday. Incintally, November 4 was also the birthday of Sam Wagstaff. Birthday celebratns have always been important to Mapplethorpe, acrdg to Barbara Jakobson. She remembered other birthday parti the past that Sam had given for Robert. “ ‘Sam’s gog to give me a party,’ Robert would say way advance.”</p><p class="paywall">At the peak of the birthday party, nearly two hundred people led through the vast stud, among them the film stars San Sarandon, Sigourney Weaver, and Gregory H, all of whom had been photographed by Mapplethorpe. In the crowd were Prce and Prcs Michael of Greece, the Earl of Warwick, Tom Armstrong of the Whney Mm, gallery owner Mary Boone, Bce Mailman, who was a managerial partner the St. Marks Baths until was closed down the wake of the AIDS epimic, and Dimri Levas, the art director and prcipal stylist on Mapplethorpe’s fashn shoots, who is said to be one of his heirs, as well as well-known figur om the magaze, gallery, ctn, and mm worlds. And llectors. And people who were jt iends. Inevably, there were men black leather, some wearg master ps, standg on the sil, watchg. Everyone mixed.</p><p class="paywall">Everybody brought gifts, wonrfully wrapped, and soon there was a mounta of them on a bench by the ont door. Bouquets of flowers kept arrivg throughout the party, cludg one of three dozen whe ros a perfect crystal vase. Waers black jackets moved through the crowd, rryg trays of fluted glass of champagne. On several tabl were large ts of beluga viar, and Robert kept leang over and helpg himself.</p><p class="paywall">Although there was certaly a sense that this was Robert Mapplethorpe’s farewell party for his iends, there were no feelgs of sadns the stud that night. Robert, ntually domable, provid his guts wh an upbeat and optimistic celebratn. He looked better than he had looked weeks. He sat his favore chair, missg nothg, receivg gut after gut who me and knelt by his si to chat wh him. Toward the end of the eveng, he stood up and walked.</p><p class="paywall">“This is Robert. This is his life. Everybody betiful. Everybody succsful,” said one of the guts whom I did not know.</p><p class="paywall">“Robert has style,” said Prce Michael of Greece, surveyg the event. “Personal style is not somethg you learn. It’s somethg you have.”</p><p class="has-dropp paywall">One of the most equently asked qutns the days is where Robert Mapplethorpe will leave his money when he di. His lawyer, Michael Stout, refed to answer that qutn. But is known that the photographer has recently set up the Robert Mapplethorpe Foundatn, wh a board of directors. Bis specific bequts to iends, the foundatn will probably give money to the arts as well as to the Amerin Foundatn for AIDS Rearch (AmFAR), an anizatn wh which Mapplethorpe has been associated sce Sam Wagstaff’s ath. Robert Mapplethorpe was scribed by everyone I terviewed as the man who had taken the sexual experience to the lims his work, a documentarian of the homoerotic life the 1970s at s most excsive, rultg, possibly, the very plague that was killg s rerr. Even his floral photographs are erotic; as crics have poted out, he mak que clear that flowers are the sexual ans of plants. A Mapplethorpe prt om the Robert Miller Gallery, his aler New York, starts at $5,000.</p><p class="paywall">“I seem to read somethg about you every day the prs,” I said.</p><p class="paywall">“I do love publicy,” he replied. “Good publicy.”</p><p class="has-dropp paywall">In a sense, Sam Wagstaff created Robert Mapplethorpe, but anyone who knows Robert Mapplethorpe will tell you that he was ready and wag to be created. They met over the telephone when Mapplethorpe was twenty-five years old and Sam was fifty. “Are you the shy pornographer?” Wagstaff asked when he telephoned him. Robert had heard of Sam before the ll. “Everyone said there was a person the art world I should meet. So Sam me over to look at my etchgs, so to speak.”</p><p class="paywall">At that time the totally unknown Mapplethorpe was sharg an apartment Brooklyn wh the then totally unknown poet and later rock ’n’ roll star Patti Smh, who has remaed one of his clost iends. Although he was, his own words, “dog photographs of sexualy” wh a Polaroid mera back then, he did not yet nsir himself a photographer. The Polaroid mera had been purchased for him by John McKendry, the curator of prts and photographs at the Metropolan Mm. Mapplethorpe had bee a sort of adopted son to McKendry and his wife, Maxe la Falaise, the dghter of the English portra pater Sir Oswald Birley, and was taken about by them to the smart circl of people who later beme his iends and patrons. Wagstaff and Mapplethorpe beme posive fluenc on each other’s liv. The handsome and patrician Wagstaff, who graduated om Yale and once worked advertisg, had long sce moved away om the Upper East Si and New York society world of his birth to the bohemian world downtown. A former mm curator, he had bee more and more of a reclive figure, volved wh a group voted to self-fulfillment lled Ari, and sometim, acrdg to Mapplethorpe, observg whole days of silence. Wagstaff enuraged Mapplethorpe his photography, and Mapplethorpe persuad Wagstaff to start llectg photographs. “He beme obssed wh photography,” said Mapplethorpe. “He bought wh a vengeance. It went beyond anythg I imaged. Through him, I started lookg at photographs a much more ser way. I got to know alers. I went wh him when he was buyg thgs. It was a great tn, although I had my own visn right om the begng. If you look at my early Polaroids, the style was then what I have now.”</p><p class="has-dropp paywall">Richard Marshall stat his troductn the talogue that Mapplethorpe “did not feel a strong iologil mment to photography; rather simply beme the medium that uld bt nvey his statement.” Explag this, Marshall said, “He wasn’t a photographer who found his subject. He took up the mera to play wh, and found that was what he was lookg for.”</p><p class="paywall">Barbara Jakobson, who was one of Mapplethorpe’s first avid supporters as well as an old iend of Wagstaff’s, said, “When I bee enthiastic about an artist, I do not keep my mouth shut. Wh five mut the jungle dms are beatg. I like to see people I admire succeed. That was when our iendship started. Robert really saved Sam Wagstaff’s life. At the begng of the seventi, anyone who knew Sam said that he was virtually a recle. Robert is the one who got him terted llectg photography. Sam revolutnized the way we look at photographs. When he sold his llectn to the Getty Mm, his posn photography was forever assured.”</p><p class="paywall">Mapplethorpe do not stt his acknowledgment of his late iend’s patronage. “I was a real hippie. Sam was a real hippie too. Fancially he certaly helped me. He was very genero. We never actually lived together. I had a loft on Bond Street which he bought for me. He had a loft on Bond Street too. We were lovers as well. I thk if you’re gog to do a story, you should get all the facts. It lasted a uple of years. Then we beme bt iends. I even troduced him to Jam Nelson, who beme his boyiend after me.” He psed before he add, “He’s sick at this pot too.”</p><p class="paywall">“Wh AIDS?”</p><div data-attr-viewport-monor="le-recirc" class="le-recirc-wrapper le-recirc-observer-target-2 viewport-monor-anchor"></div><p class="paywall">“Y. He’s gog through all his money. He’s spendg like crazy. He rents an apartment at Number One Fifth Avenue, where he and Sam lived, but Sam’s apartment that buildg has been sold.”</p><p class="paywall">Shortly after we talked, Jim Nelson died. Nelson, a former hairstylist for the televisn soap opera <em>All My Children,</em> hered 25 percent of Wagstaff’s riduary tate, and Mapplethorpe hered 75 percent. Nelson, aware that he was dyg, wanted his money immediately, so Mapplethorpe, through their lawyers, bought out Nelson’s share. As Nelson’s life neared s end, he fulfilled a long-held dream and rented two su on the <em>Queen Elizabeth 2,</em> one for himself and one for a pann, and sailed to England, where he stayed a sue at the Rz Hotel, and then took the Conr back to New York. He spent the last day of his life makg up a list of people he wanted to be notified of his ath and another list of people he did not want to be notified, one of the beg the person who told me this Sam was his sugar daddy a way.”</p><p class="paywall">Most of Wagstaff’s money me om his stepfather, Donald Newhall, who left him and his sister shar of the Newhall Land and Farmg Company California, which later went public. Over the years, Wagstaff sold off some of his shar to buy his art, photography, and silver llectns. In his will he left bequts of $100,000 each to the Mm of Morn Art, the Metropolan Mm, and the New York Public Library, as well as $10,000 and the fay silver to his sister, Mrs. Jefferson, and $10,000 to each of her three children.</p><p class="paywall">“She’s enormoly rich,” said Mapplethorpe about Mrs. Jefferson. “She didn’t need the money.”</p><p class="paywall">“Then why did she ntt the will?”</p><p class="paywall">Mapplethorpe shgged. “She need entertament,” he said. If there is a cisn to be ma, he unrstands the issu and vot the right way.”</p><p class="has-dropp paywall">Although I had known Sam Wagstaff for years, my ntact wh Robert Mapplethorpe was mimal, no more than an acquatanchip, so I was surprised when he asked for me to wre this article, and more surprised when he asked to photograph me. Two years ago, right after Sam Wagstaff died, when the mors of ligatn between his fay and his heir over his will were rampant, I had thought of wrg an article on the subject for this magaze. Mapplethorpe, however, let be known through his great iend Suzie Frankfurt, the sociale terr rator, that he did not wish me to wre such a piece, and I immediately sisted. Later I saw him at the memorial service for Sam that was held at the Metropolan Mm. Already ill himself, he ma a pot of thankg me for not wrg the article.</p><p class="paywall">I had met Mapplethorpe for the first time several years earlier, at a dner given by the Earl of Warwick at his New York apartment. Although Mapplethorpe was then famo as a photographer, the celebry that was so much a part of his persona was due equally to his reputatn as a leadg figure the sadomasochistic subculture of New York. Ined, he was the subject of endls stori volvg dark bars and black men and bizarre behavr of the bondage and domatn variety. He arrived late for the dner, drsed for the post-dner-party part of his night black leather, and beme no time the foc of attentn and unqutnably the star of Lord Warwick’s party. He was at ease his surroundgs and, surprisg to me, up on the latt gossip of the English smart set, tellg stori which Guns and Tennant nam abound. When ffee was served, he took some marijuana and a package of papers out of his pocket, rolled a jot, l , haled eply, all the time ntug a story he was tellg, and passed the jot to the person on his right. It was not a marijuana-smokg group, and the jot was cled and passed on by each person to the next, except for one gut who, gamely, took a few tok and then passed out at the table, after sayg, “Strong stuff.” Unperturbed, Mapplethorpe ntued talkg until was time for his ex. After he was gone, those who remaed talked about him.</p><p class="has-dropp paywall">Like everythg else about Robert Mapplethorpe, the stud where he now liv and works on a major crosstown street the Chelsea sectn of New York, which was also purchased for him by Wagstaff, is enormoly stylish and handsomely done. In 1988 was photographed by <em>HG</em> magaze, and Mart Filler wrote the acpanyg text, “Mapplethorpe’s rooms revel the pleasur of art for art’s sake and renfirm his athetic genealogy a direct le of scent om Osr Wil and Aubrey Beardsley through Christian Bérard and Jean Cocte.” There are thgs to look at every directn, a mélange of objects and pictur, but everythg has s place. Orr and rtrat prevail. “You create your own world,” said Mapplethorpe. “The one that I want to live is very precise, very ntrolled.” It fs wh his personaly that he pays his bills stantly on receivg them.</p><p class="paywall">Each time we met, we sat a different area. In the back stg room of the floor-through loft space, the wdows have elegant brown-black taffeta tieback curtas signed by Suzie Frankfurt, which seem both ngo and not at all ngo. Frankfurt, who matas a plited iendship wh him, said, “Robert liv the middle of a ntradictn—part altar boy and part leather bar.” That day he was wearg a black drsg gown om Gianni Versace, the Italian signer, and his black velvet slippers.</p><p class="paywall">At one pot he went to a paroxysm of ughg, and om the look he gave me I realized he didn’t want me to see him like that. “Would you exce me for a mute,” he said. I got up and went to another part of the apartment until he lled me back.</p><p class="paywall">“Oh, I’m so sick,” he said. “I’ve been throwg up all night. The nights are awful.”</p><p class="paywall">“When did you first know you had AIDS?” I asked.</p><p class="paywall">“It was diagnosed as AIDS two years ago October.”</p><p class="paywall">“Did you spect beforehand that you had ?”</p><div data-attr-viewport-monor="le-recirc" class="le-recirc-wrapper le-recirc-observer-target-4 viewport-monor-anchor"></div><p class="paywall">“Every faggot spects beforehand.”</p><p class="paywall">He said that he had two nurs on twelve-hour shifts that st him a thoand dollars a day. “But I’m lucky. I have surance.” He has been on AZT almost om the begng. He worri nstantly about iends who are ls fortunate, specifilly his black iends. In a nversatn wh Marli Black, who assembled the Rivenll Collectn of morn art and photography, which ntas the largt selectn of Mapplethorpe’s work the world, he once said, “At some pot I started photographg black men. It was an area that hadn’t been explored extensively. If you went through the history of nu male photography, there were very few black subjects. I found that I uld take pictur of black men that were so subtle, and the form was so photographil.” Now, mg on that, he said, “Most of the blacks don’t have surance and therefore n’t afford AZT. They all died quickly, the blacks. If I go through my <em>Black Book,</em> half of them are ad.”</p><p class="has-dropp paywall">When I sat for him to be photographed, I was nervo, even though he had asked me to s. It was on a day that he was not feelg well. He had not slept the night before. He ughed a great al. His sk was very pale. We sat on a sofa and talked while Brian English, his assistant, set up the mera and chair where I would s for the picture. Although ill, Mapplethorpe kept workg most days. He showed me pictur he had taken a day or two before of the three-year-old dghter of the actrs San Sarandon, and he had arranged to photograph Carola Herrera, the drs signer, as soon as he was fished wh me. I was talkg about anythg I uld thk of, mostly about people we both knew, to postpone the evable. Fally, I told him I was nervo. “Why?” he asked. “I jt am,” I said. “Don’t be,” he said quietly. I was stck as always by his grace and manners, which seemed such a ntradictn to the image most people have of Robert Mapplethorpe. Fally Brian placed me the chair, and Robert got up and walked very slowly over to where the Hasselblad mera was set up. He looked the viewfr. He asked Brian to move a light. He ma an adjtment on a lens openg. “Look to the left,” he said. “Keep your head there. Look back toward me wh your ey.” He was charge.</p><p class="paywall">Another time, I remarked that he was lookg better. He told me that he was fally able to eat somethg lled TPN, a totally nutr substance which gave him 2,400 lori a day. “I don’t actually eat. I’m fed mostly by tube. If I hadn’t found this, I’d be ad by now. I uldn’t keep any food down.” And then he said a le I heard him say over and over. “This disease is hio.”</p><p class="paywall">“My biggt problem now is walkg. I have nropathy, like when your foot’s asleep. It’s nstant. It’s my hands too. If weren’t for that, I’d go out.” His ey moved toward the wdow. “I’d like to go to Central Park to see the new zoo. And I’d like to go back to the Whney to see the show. I hear there are l of people to see .”</p><p class="has-dropp paywall">He was born a middle-class suburban neighborhood lled Floral Park, which is on the edge of Queens, New York, the third of six children a Catholic fay of English, German, and Irish extractn. His mother is a hoewife. His father do electril work. He went to a public school Floral Park, but he would have preferred to go to the Catholic school, which his younger brothers went to. Although he now says that Floral Park was a perfect place for his parents to raise a fay, early yearngs nonnformist directns brought his fay life to a halt. “I wanted to have the eedom to do what I wanted to do. The only way to do that was to break away. I didn’t want to have to worry about what my parents thought. When I was sixteen, I went to llege at the Pratt Instute. That was when I began to live elsewhere.”</p><p class="paywall">Except for his brother Edward, the youngt of the six, who was at the stud each time I was there, he has not been close to his fay for years, although he said that they are “closer sce I told them I was sick, which was not too long ago.”</p><p class="paywall">“Did your parents e to see your show at the Whney?” I asked him.</p><p class="paywall">He shook his head no. “They tend to,” he said. Then he add, “But they have e to see me here.”</p><p class="paywall">While still school, he began livg wh Patti Smh, whom he met Brooklyn. Maxe la Falaise McKendry remembered that when Robert first met Smh he kicked a hole through om his apartment to hers so that they uld munite better. “Patti and I built on each other’s nfince. We were never jealo of each other’s work. We spired each other. She beme regnized first. Then she had a rerd ntract. She phed ahead. There was a parallel happeng to each reer.” Patti Smh, who is now married wh two children, liv Detro. “We talk to each other all the time,” he said.</p><p class="has-dropp paywall">‘S&M is a certa percentage of Robert’s work, and necsary to show to give a reprentatn of his work,” said Richard Marshall. He told me that when they put the exhibn together there had never been any ia of censorship, or any rervatn about cludg offensive material, although, he add, “there are some stronger pictur which do exist, some more explicly graphic pictur, the, uh, peratn of the arm.” What Marshall was referrg to was what Mapplethorpe lls his fist-fuckg file. “Call Suzanne,” he said to me, speakg of his lovely young secretary, Suzanne Donaldson, “and ask her, if you want to see the fist-fuckg file, or the vio of me havg my t pierced.” When certa of the photographs were shown at an art gallery Madrid, the gallery owner, who has sce died of AIDS, was sent to jail.</p><p class="paywall">“There were some letters of prott about the show, but not great numbers at all,” said Marshall. “We did put up signs three or four lotns, warng parents that the show might not be applible for children.”</p><div data-attr-viewport-monor="le-recirc" class="le-recirc-wrapper le-recirc-observer-target-5 viewport-monor-anchor"></div><p class="paywall">Flora Biddle ncurs. “I went on a tour of the show the night before opened wh the Whney Circle, which is the hight tegory of membership. Richard Marshall talked about the pictur to the group, alg wh the pictur you uld ll the most sexual, and spoke betifully about them. The people the Circle were attentive and open to them. Afterwards, people me up and said they thought was so wonrful the Whney was hangg this show.”</p><p class="has-dropp paywall">Barbara Jakobson said, “Sometim I’d drive downtown my yellow Volkswagen to have dner wh Robert. Then, later, I’d drop him off at the Me-shaft, or one of those plac. God forbid he be seen havg a woman drop him off, so I’d leave him a block away. I had no sire to see si, but I once asked Robert to scribe what was like, an archectural way. He said there were plac of rual. He told me how the rooms were divid, whout tellg me what actually went on. Once he showed me a sadomasochistic photograph. I said to him, ‘I n’t believe that a human beg would allow this to be done.’ He replied, ‘The person who had done wanted to be done. Bis, he heals quickly.’ Robert would fd the people who enjoyed this. The tertg part is that they posed for him.”</p><p class="paywall">When I discsed this nversatn wh Mapplethorpe, he said, “I went to the Eagl Nt and the Spike to fd mols. Or I’d meet people om referrals. They’d hear you were good at such and such a thg, and ll. I was more to the experience than the photography. The on I thought were extraordary enough, or the on I related to, I’d eventually photograph.”</p><p class="paywall">“Were dgs volved?”</p><p class="paywall">“Oh, y. I’ve certaly had my share of dg experienc, but I don’t need dgs to take pictur. They get the way. However, dgs certaly played a big factor sex at that time. MDA was a big dg all this. It’s somewhere between e and acid.</p><p class="paywall">“Most of the people S&M were proud of what they were dog. It was givg pleasure to one another. It was not about hurtg. It was sort of an art. Certaly there were people who were to btaly, but that wasn’t my take. For me, was about two people havg a simultaneo asm. It was pleasure, even though looked paful.</p><p class="paywall">“Dog thgs to people who don’t want done to them is not sexy to me. The people my pictur were dog bee they wanted to. No one was forced to .</p><p class="paywall">“For me S&M means sex and magic, not sadomasochism. It was all about tst.”</p><p class="paywall">“If his S&M work were heterosexual, wouldn’t be acceptable,” I was told by a world-famo photographer who, bee of Mapplethorpe’s illns, did not wish to be quoted by name makg cril remarks about him. “The smart society that has accepted this work has done so bee is so far removed om their own liv.”</p><div data-attr-viewport-monor="le-recirc" class="le-recirc-wrapper le-recirc-observer-target-6 viewport-monor-anchor"></div><p class="paywall">Even before the AIDS crisis, though, Mapplethorpe had begun to move away om the S&M scene as subject matter for his photography. One of his clost associat said to me, “Robert had gotten more and more away om beg a downtown personaly. He had been observg the uptown life for some time, and I thk he wanted to bee a society photographer. Once, leavg someone’s town hoe on the Upper East Si, he said, ‘I wouldn’t md livg like that.’”</p><p class="paywall">Carola Herrera, the subject of one of Mapplethorpe’s earlit and most celebrated society portras, has known him for years, “long before he was famo.” They met on the island of Mtique the Caribbean the early 1970s, when Herrera and her hband were guts of Prcs Margaret, and Mapplethorpe, along wh his English iend Cathere Tennant, was a gut of Tennant’s brother Col, who is now Lord Glennner. Tennant remembers Mapplethorpe at the time wearg more ivory bracelets up his arms than the rebell Nancy Cunard wore the famo portra Cecil Beaton took of her 1927. When Mapplethorpe took Herrera’s picture, a hotel room New York, he had only a mimum of photographic equipment and no assistant. Herrera’s hband, Realdo, had to hold the silver umbrella reflector for him. Mapplethorpe photographed Herrera wearg a hat and pearls, agast a blank ground, and sce then his style social portraure has remaed as stark as his nu figur, mirrorg the sculptural fluence of Man Ray more than the ethereal settgs of Cecil Beaton.</p><p class="has-dropp paywall">On Friday eveng, November 4, of last year, Robert Mapplethorpe gave a large cktail party at his stud to celebrate his forty-send birthday. Incintally, November 4 was also the birthday of Sam Wagstaff. Birthday celebratns have always been important to Mapplethorpe, acrdg to Barbara Jakobson.
