GAY GEOLOGIST
Although ltle to no progrs has been ma on diversy the Geoscienc over the last half century, generatns of geoscience lears have ntributed their time, passn and expertise towards makg our field more clive. One of the early lears was Dr. Cly Wahrhaftig (1919-1994). Durg his reer as a Geologist at the USGS and as a Profsor at UC Berkeley, Dr. Wahrhaftig regularly brought K-12 stunts om Oakland and Berkeley on geology field trips via public transportatn. Dr. Wahrhaftig's inty and experienc as a gay man Geology were central motivatns for his mment to makg the Geoscienc more equable. He served as the first chairperson of the GSA's Commtee on Mory Participatn the Earth Scienc (1972) and as a member of the first AGU Submtee on Mory Participatn (1975).
In 1972, Dr. Wahrhaftig and other early lears like Dr. Randolph "Bill" Bromery and Dr. Louis Pakiser nvened the First Natnal Conference on Mory Participatn Earth Science and Meral Engeerg. This workshop brought together civil rights lears and reprentativ om feral agenci, dtry, and amia to discs the challeng facg stunts om unrreprented groups the Geoscienc. Yet spe the impassned efforts of early lears, many of the issu intified 1972 still plague our muny fifty years later. Here I draw on historil documents to exame the succs and shortgs of diversy and cln iativ that me out of this 1972 meetg.
Today, the Geoscienc face an urgent crisis of unrreprentatn which closely mirrors the problems which Dr. Wahrhaftig and his ntemporari set out to addrs fifty years ago. For our efforts toward greater diversy, cln, and equy the Geoscienc to succeed today, we mt exame why siar efforts durg the last half century failed. Geoscience lears the 1970s had the rourc, expertise, and visn necsary to create a diverse, clive and equable Geoscience landspe, but they faced barriers that limed progrs on the issu. This prentatn draws on their experienc to intify those obstacl so that fifty years om today, we will look back and see that we were able to meet our goals. * gay geologist *
Among unrreprented groups, LGBTQIA+ (lbian, gay, bisexual, transgenr, queer, tersex, asexual and beyond) people rema isolated.
THE GEOLOGIST GAY
A lot of LGBT scientists did not 'e out' the past bee they lived a time where beg gay or bisexual or transgenr was que simply not accepted. But they don't have to do that anymore. So let's solve this lack of knowledge about LGBT scientists. Here are seven scientists you probably didn't know were LGBT (or maybe you didn't even know they existed!). * gay geologist *
Diverse groups have accs to a wir variety of perspectiv, ias and problem-solvg approach and procs rmatn more eply, whereas homogeno groups face groupthk, narrow-mdns and overnfince, rultg biased cisn makg. We are both homosexuals, and the force that ed to do so much for each other, and bee of each other, was homosexual love… Allan was the only one of all my field assistants or stunts who ever had any ditn om me that I am homosexual.
Now when I say a role mol, I don’t mean that I am tryg to nvce young geologists to bee homosexual. And I would not wish on anyone the life of reprsn, self-doubt, and dissimulatn that Allan and I had to go through… The group whose attus I wish to affect are those of you who are not homosexual, but who may fd yourselv wh stunts, subordant or lleagu who are.

I ask you to regnize that homosexuals n make as much of a ntributn to science and humany as anyone else. In the last 20 years the homosexual (or gay) muny has moved out of the shadows, and there are gay stunt anizatns on almost every mp. So is likely that some gay stunts who enter geoscience will not be closeted as Allan and I were.
The other group whose attus I wish to affect are gay stunts who would like to bee geoscientists, but are aaid to bee they thk beg gay and beg a geologist are patible. “Life as a gay man geology:” The legacy of Dr. Wahrhaftig's inty and experienc as a gay man Geology were central motivatns for his mment to makg the Geoscienc more equable.
However, there has not been a liberate foc on challeng faced by the lbian, gay, bisexual, transgenr, and queer (LGBTQ+) muny the geoscienc wh rpect to fieldwork. Diverse sexuali are also reprented, domated by bisexual/pansexual/queer inti (52%), followed by gay/lbian inti (34%), and then asexual/misexual/romantic-spectm inti (14%). By parison, there are fewer gay men and a higher proportn of women and nonbary/genrqueer and bisexual people the geoscienc.
