About twice a week I go out on dns for characters whose key scriptors clu, “entled,” “bro-ish,” “jock-type,” and “ignorant.” Over the summer, I was st as an emotnally and physilly vlent <a href=">whe supremacist</a> sympathizer on <a href=">Hulu’s <em>The Path</em></a>. By day, I was havg a fake swastika "tattooed" on my arm wh makp — by night, I was takg part the formatn of <a data-offer-url=" class="external-lk" data-event-click="{"element":"ExternalLk","outgogURL":"" href=" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">Voic4</a>, a non-vlent advocy group that is mted to g direct actn to achieve global queer liberatn.</p><div><div class="ConsumerMarketgUnThemedWrapper-iUTMTf jssHut nsumer-marketg-un nsumer-marketg-un--article-mid-ntent" role="prentatn" aria-hidn="te"><div class="nsumer-marketg-un__slot nsumer-marketg-un__slot--article-mid-ntent nsumer-marketg-un__slot---ntent"></div><div class="journey-un"></div></div></div><p>As an openly queer actor who is fally bookg substantial rol, I’m often forced to reckon wh the fact that some of the characters I dn for are archetyp of people I would passnately rist my activism. It’s no secret that the entertament dtry is domated by whe-cis-het-mal and I have to nstantly check my <a href=">privilege as a whe cisgenr gay man</a> who plays straight, sometim hateful, characters.</p><p>Most recently, I was st as a transphobic high school football player named Derek (possibly the straightt name ever nceived) on NBC’s <a href="><em>Rise</em></a>. I am only jt begng to make big steps my reer, so naturally, I was over the moon when I got the ll. As the shoot dat approached and the ial bliss of bookg a gig passed, I started preparg for my few scen. This was my third time on a profsnal set and I had a very clear goal for myself: to believe that I belong there — that my reer wasn't a fle anymore and that my hard work and trag as an openly queer actor was fally payg off.</p><div class="Contaer-bkChBi byNLHx"></div><p>But along wh the thrill of nabbg the role, there is a perverse feelg of beg paid to mentally and emotnally rry out the actns of a bully (even om an actor’s perspective) which peaked on the first day of shootg. I knew the character was ignorant, but I wasn’t prepared for how terrible felt to act out verbal and physil vlence toward my non-bary, trans-mascule stmate, <a href=">Ellie Duatels</a> (they/them), whose performance of a trans stunt named Michael is nothg short of spirg. While alg wh the anti-queer nature of my l, I was also stgglg wh my own challeng as a queer person.</p><div class="AdWrapper-dQtivb fZrssQ ad ad---ntent"><div class="ad__slot ad__slot---ntent" data-no-id="w0kmh"></div></div><p>The moment I arrived on set I felt a faiar anxiety that I know many queer actors experience, particularly a st that is predomantly straight: Do I tell them I’m gay? Do they already know? Do I play along wh the "bro-talk" gog back and forth between the other actors? Will they act weirdly when they fd out that I’m a queer person st as the misogynist, transphobic football bro? As crew swirled around , Ellie and I did not have much time to talk about the scene before we started. I distctly remember them breathg, focg, and lookg at me tently — emotnally bracg themselv for hateful words that would be all too faiar. Beforehand, Ellie said to me somethg along the l of “If I cry, ’s bee you’re <a data-offer-url=" class="external-lk" data-event-click="{"element":"ExternalLk","outgogURL":"" href=" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">ad-namg</a> him. It’s jt really hard.”</p><p>The scene begs at a hoe party wh an toxited Derek and his iends askg Michael — whose pronouns are "he/his" — vasive qutns about his transn and how he the bathroom (both of which are nobody's bs). It then lat to misgenrg, ad-namg, and aggrsively shovg him. By this pot, Ellie was aware of my own sexualy and, spe how emotnal the scene was for to act out, they were the st member I actually felt the saft wh.
