Content note: This post discs homophobia and particularly the e of homophobic slurs hockey. I have tentnally not repeated the slurs this post, however, I have lked to articl that do, and have clud tweets that directly addrs homophobia.
Former players report experiencg homophobic abe locker rooms and on the ice, and the sual e of slurs has been noted as a troublg feature of hockey culture.
Gay hockey players pot to the e of sually homophobic language, such as sayg “that’s so gay” to refer to somethg negative, as a barrier that prevents them om g out. Even amongst straight hockey players, there is a fear of beg viewed as gay, or of not nformg to the image that has been nstcted of what a hockey player should be. Although some NHL players e Pri tape on their sticks or equipment and have spoken out agast homophobia, others have implied that dog so may rult creased chirpg on the ice, cludg om their own teammat.
ALPE SKIG CHAMPN HIG ROBERTS OUT AS GAY
Le Prokop me out as gay July of 2021.
He is the first-ever player unr ntract wh an NHL club to e out as gay. We’ll never know how many gay hockey players there are.
It n’t be assumed that the percentage of gay players wh the NHL and other profsnal leagu is the same as wh the general populatn, as gay men may choose to leave the sport when they are younger due to the unwelg environment. Perhaps as a rult of the work done by You Can Play, or bee of prsure om some fans, NHL clubs have worked to change their image and the perceptn of hockey as a homophobic sport. Brock McGillis, a former OHL and UHL goaltenr who is openly gay, explas that teams need to be ted about issu like homophobia sport, rather than treatg Pri night as a box-tickg exercise.
