Or maybe you really weren’t great at your job bee was a bad match for your skills and strengths—but that don’t mean you’re a bad person. By intifyg all the facts, you’re better able to regnize what you are and aren’t ntrol of—and to avoid lettg a challengg event fe your self-worth.</p><p>Another way to challenge our ner negative narrative is to ask ourselv where those thoughts are g om, Dr. Goon says. For example, maybe social media posts that trigger parison n fuel negative self-talk. Consir those filtered Instagram pics om someone you haven’t seen sce high school that make you feel your life pal parison to theirs or that you’re somehow ls worthy. Dr. Goon suggts askg yourself, “Where is that story g om?” and “Is actually te?” Those qutns may help you realize that negative thoughts about yourself often aren’t facts, but rults of cultural or childhood ndng.</p><p>Sometim we ternalize the voice of a hyper-cril parent, for example, Dr. Solomon says: The mother wh low self-teem who berated herself when she ma mistak. Or the father who was quick to pot out his perceived physil flaws. Breakg tergeneratnal patterns is hard to do but n also be an empowerg step cultivatg self-love. “It’s excg to realize that negative patterns, like beg severely cril of your body or abili, n stop wh you,” Dr. Solomon says.</p><p>Self-love isn’t about blamg our parents or regivers. It’s possible that they did the bt they uld at the time they were raisg you <em>and</em> you didn’t get what you need when you were ltle. “We are not rponsible for the ways which we were hurt, misunrstood, or neglected by regivers when we were children,” Dr. Solomon says. “But is our rponsibily, as adults, to addrs and adjt the pg strategi we veloped to al wh that pa.” Aga, learng to accept what happened the past so you n move through —maybe <a href=">wh a therapist</a>, if you’re stgglg on your own—n help you grow closer to self-love, she says.</p><h2>4. Acknowledge that opprsn and trma n make self-love even more challengg. </h2><p>If you belong to a margalized or historilly opprsed group, you may ternalize societal msag tellg you you’re not valuable. And even if you don’t believe those msag about your particular group are te about you, says Dr. Goon, there n be prsure to overperform an attempt to disprove them. “Some people start to neglect their physil, emotnal, and mental needs the procs of tryg to prove, on an outward level, that they’re worthy and that they serve rpect,” she says.</p></div></div></div><div class="GridItem-buujkM fVLMby
