Later the same eveng, the Hollywood Foreign Prs Associatn gave out s annual <a href=">Goln Globe Awards</a>, snubbg the film that serv as the bt illtratn of our current polil and cultural prediment: “Jojo Rabb.”</p><p class="paywall">Taika Wai’s movie is about a ten-year-old boy who is a fervent Nazi until, jt before Germany los the war, he falls love wh a Jewish girl who is hidg his attic. The film has been <a href=">cricized</a> for makg light of unspeakable crim. My lleague Richard Brody <a href=">objected</a> not so much to the film’s gags as to the empathy shows to the haters, and, ed, the movie n be read as a betifully renred versn of a certa journalistic genre: the nscendg <a data-offer-url=" class="external-lk" data-event-click="{"element":"ExternalLk","outgogURL":"" href=" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">portrayal</a> of the misguid and misrmed Tmp supporter. But n also be read as an acunt of the profound and willful idcy that unrli polil tragedy. Seen this way—and this is the way I’ve seen both tim I’ve watched “Jojo Rabb”—the movie is as brave and sightful a portra of tocracy as any ntemporary work of art has offered.</p><p class="paywall">The protagonist, Jojo (Roman Griff Davis), has an imagary iend, Adolf Hler. Early the movie, the Hler of Jojo’s imagatn (played by Wai) implor Jojo to disregard the opns of others: “People ed to say a lot of nasty thgs about me. ‘This guy is a lunatic!’ ‘Look at that psycho—he’s gog to get all killed!’ ” Those people are right, of urse, but, at the moment when imagary Hler is speakg to Jojo, the real Hler’s power is so immense that those te statements sound absurd to Jojo and lns of other Germans. They believe Hler and what he tells them.</p><p class="paywall">The movie’s most lorful propagandist is Frle Rahm (Rebel Wilson), who is the source of much of Jojo’s knowledge about Jews. Once upon a time, she tells a group of Hler Youth, a Jew mated wh a fish, and, sce then, the Jews have been vered sl. “The Aryans are one thoand tim more civilized and advanced than any other race,” she adds, to the boys’ light. “Now get your thgs together, kids. It’s time to burn some books!” Later, she provis a lson nspiracy thkg, when she tells the story of her uncle: “A Jew hypnotized him, and he beme a massive dnk and a gambler, and he cheated on his wife, and he had an appropriate relatnship wh my sister.
