Gayundah sailed om Newstle-on-Tyne for Atralia unr the mand of Capta Henry Townley-Wright, RN, on 13 November 1884. Proceedg via Gibraltar, Malta, Suez, An, Colombo, Batavia, Thursday Island and Townsville, Gayundah arrived at Brisbane on 28 March 1885. Thereafter Gayundah's chief duti were the protectn of Moreton Bay and trag ship for the Queensland Marime Defence Force.

Reluctant to ply, and argug that bee his ship wore the Whe Ensign he was not unr Queensland thory, Wright moored Gayundah the middle of the Brisbane River and threatened to sail for Sydney.

On 30 September 1892 Gayundah was laid up rerve Brisbane. In 1898 Gayundah remissned unr the Queensland Blue Ensign. Followg Feratn 1901 Gayundah beme a un of the Commonwealth Naval Forc, but owg to admistrative lays ntrol did not pass to the new Commonwealth ernment until 1904.

Gayundah remaed Queensland waters and on 9 April 1903 won some claim to fame when she rried out the first ship to shore wirels telegraphy experiments Atralia. In 1911 Gayundah spent several months on a 'special cise', aimed at enforcg Atralian sovereignty north wtern waters.

Gayundah ntued to provi rerve trag and on ocsn a venue for entertag senr officials. While unrgog repairs Sydney durg 1913-14 Gayundah received some stctural alteratns, a raised forestle takg the place of the turtleback forward. HMAS Gayundah, at Cockatoo Island Dockyard, after her new raised forestle had been fted 1914.

Wh the threat om German merchant rairs creasg after 1917, Gayundah first assumed patrol duti off Port Jackson and later the Spencer Gulf.

Gayundah as a sand and gravel barge the Brisbane River. On 23 Augt 1918 Gayundah fally paid off Melbourne. On 2 June 1958 after seventy four years afloat, Gayundah was beached as a breakwater off the Woody Pot cliffs on the Redcliffe Pensula jt north of Brisbane.
