In this, the DSM followed a long tradn medice and psychiatry, which the neteenth century appropriated homosexualy om the Church and, what mt have seemed like an élan of enlightenment, promoted om s to mental disorr. Meanwhile, the World Health Organizatn (WHO) Geneva only removed homosexualy om s Internatnal Classifitn of Diseas (ICD) wh the publitn of ICD-10 1992, although ICD-10 still rried the nstct of "ego-dystonic sexual orientatn. The evolutn of the stat of homosexualy the classifitns of mental disorrs highlights that ncepts of mental disorr n be rapidly evolvg social nstcts that change as society chang.
The majory of MSM [men who have sex wh men] are highly rilient and able to pe succsfully wh many negative life strsors, such as those associated wh homophobia and discrimatn;"1 however, this don't mean that there aren't specific gay mental health challeng. Nearly 50 years ago, LGBTQ+ activists achieved what was lled the “greatt gay victory” of the time: succsfully phg members of the Amerin Psychiatric Associatn (APA) to remove the diagnosis of homosexualy om the official classifitn of mental illns, the Diagnostic and Statistil Manual of Mental Disorrs (DSM). Declassifitn, as the years-long effort was known, culmated 1973, when May, LGBTQ+ voic were heard at the annual APA nference, and later the APA Board of Tste voted to remove homosexualy om the DSM.
The classifitn of mental illns was born om the legacy of multiple systems of power: the Amerin legal system crimalized homosexual behavr; feral and state ernments had not yet dified protectns for queer and trans people seekg employment and hog; and an sistence on heteronormative genr rol stigmatized anyone who viated om their role as a “woman” or a “man. The mpaign to remove the “homosexualy” diagnosis om the DSM began earnt the 1960s, backed by a growg civil rights, women’s rights, and gay rights movement across the untry.

Dubbed the “homophile” movement, gay and lbian rights anizatns major ci like New York Cy, San Francis, and Philalphia started to prsure elected officials and lnch public mpaigns for LGBTQ+ visibily and rights. Activists ramped up their efforts after years of mpaigng om the outsi: they cid to go straight to the APA nferenc where practners attend panels and discsns of psychiatry and psychology—and uld prs to classify homosexualy.
Karla Jay, a lbian activist who participated disptg a panel discsn on “sex problems” that advoted shock treatment to “cure” homosexualy, said that prottors shouted to the APA members, “off of the uch and to the streets! In 1972, at the first nference that actually featured a panel discsn on homosexualy led by LGBTQ+ people, a gay practner, John Fryer, ttified on behalf of the classifitn mpaign. “Pull your urage up by your bootstraps and disver ways which you as homosexual psychiatrists n be appropriately volved movements which attempt to change the attus of both homosexuals and heterosexuals toward homosexually, ” Fryer plead.
One of the more famo speech offered at the May 1973 APA nference Honolulu was by a gay activist named Ronald Gold, who told the APA members, “Stop , you’re makg me sick. ” The roundg le was somewhat of a double entendre: the APA was lerally sayg that Gold, as a gay man, was ill, implyg that the “medil profsnals” were creatg sickns where there was none.

Individual data were pooled om the Brish Cohort Study 2012, Health Survey for England 2011, 2012 and 2013, Sttish Health Survey 2008 to 2013, Longudal Study of Young People England 2009/10 and Unrstandg Society 2011/12. Individual participant meta-analysis was ed to pool timat om each study, allowg for between-study variatn. Of 94,818 participants, 1.1 % intified as lbian/gay, 0.9 % as bisexual, 0.8 % as ‘other’ and 97.2 % as heterosexual. Adjtg for a range of variat, adults who intified as lbian/gay had higher prevalence of mon mental disorr when pared to heterosexuals, but the associatn was different different age groups: apparent for those unr 35 (OR = 1.78, 95 % CI 1.40, 2.26), weaker at age 35–54.9 (OR = 1.42, 95 % CI 1.10, 1.84), but strongt at age 55+ (OR = 2.06, 95 % CI 1.29, 3.31). The effects were stronger for bisexual adults, siar for those intifyg as ‘other’, and siar for 'low wellbeg'. In the UK, LGB adults have higher prevalence of poor mental health and low wellbeg when pared to heterosexuals, particularly younger and olr LGB adults.
