Gay would take a distct Fvist attu wh his lor schem, but add elements of Cubism and geometry to his landsp and scen of the villag and towns the Bay Area of California.

Gay moved om the Monterey area 1919, but ntued to participate the Society, enterg his work their shows at the Oakland Art Gallery until they disband. Gay's works were exhibed both durg his life and followg his ath due to the creased attentn given to his artistic stylgs begng the 1950s. I had first disvered the Society of Six a few months ago om iend/master pater, John Bros; was a group the 1920s the Bay Area of California led by Seln Gile and Augt Gay that proposed a new style of patg.

I am guilty of choosg a somber palette, too, so I cid to challenge myself wh a more imprsnistic technique and study om one of the masters of the Society of Six – Augt Gay! Born 1890 Rabou, France, Gay immigrated to the Uned Stat wh his fay 1900, settlg Alameda, California. Gay’s work n be scribed as Cubist and geometric and many of his patgs were done on cigar box tops!

Although he pated maly landsp and astal scen, Gay was also an etcher, muralist, and furnure builr.

Click here for a ee Gay was born Rabou, France on June 11, 1890 and was one of five children. Gay immigrated wh his father and his siblgs to live Alameda, California the early 1900s.

Gay moved wh artist Seln Gile 1910 to Oakland, California.

Durg this perd, Gay's tert stcture and sign was fundamental and his lorist tennci beme apparent 1919, Gay moved to Monterey Pensula, which had long been an area of artistic activy Northern California. While still an active member of the Society of Six and regularly exhibg at the Oakland Art Gallery, Gay supported himself the begng by workg at a lol fish factory and at Oliver's Frame Shop. Together, Gay and Price lived at the Stevenson Hoe.

ART HISTORY 101 • AUGT GAY

Gay studied wh Hansen for about two years rmal outdoor class around the 1920s, but eventually Gay's works would bee more morn and would extend beyond the Imprsnistic the mid 1920s, Gay began to pursue a reer as a woodworker.

Durg the Deprsn the 1930s, through ernment supported arts programs, Gay began to pat aga, but mostly on var murals the Wt Coast. They lived together at the Stevenson hoe, but eventually moved out 1941 when Gay built his own hoe Carmel. One of the last rints of the Stevenson Hoe was the California Imprsnist pater Augt François Gay.

Called “G”, Gay lived and had a stud the buildg om the early 1920s. Gay is known for his membership the Oakland-based Society of Six paters.

AUGT GAY AND THE CRAFTS ERA OF THE STEVENSON HOE

After he moved to Monterey, members of the Society would vis him, talk art, review their recent work, and enjoy Gay’s Bohemian life style. G Gay is attendg to the rerd player, and the three Bton sisters are dancg.

Durg the hard tim of the prsn, and pecially after his marriage 1934, Gay’s patg was chiefly for missn. At the same time to earn a more reliable livg, Gay turned to other crafts, woodworkg and ratn, on his own and operatn wh other artists and signers.

Gay did gildg, wood rvgs, and furnure-makg for the Monterey Guild found by the artist Effie Fortune. For a Guild project at the Missn of San Juan Btista, by hand Gay ma 22 piec of Magnolia wood furnure the Spanish Colonial style. A new chapter of Gay’s life began when terr signer Franc Elks moved her sign stud and showroom to the Stevenson Hoe the late 1930s.

It may be that the prence of Gay’s workshop was a factor her move. Gay and an apprentice did much furnure makg for Elks, and Gay’s wife did sewg for her.

It was Elks’ practice to acquire an antique piece and then have Gay or others build replit of for sale.

When the state of California acquired the Stevenson Hoe 1941, Gay and his wife were notified that they should move. Gay built a hoe Carmel that he and his wife lived and worked until his ath 1948.
