Still, spe the prence of plenty of more tentative tracks like the openg tle cut, there are flash of the Albert Ayler-style blastg for which Gayle would later bee known. For example, Gayle and Tchii tear at each other throughout the r, 13-mute "Solid Clouds, " wh Reggie Nicholson's ee-rock dmmg eggg them on. Nicholson and bassist and former Cecil Taylor siman Sirone are superb throughout Always Born, and they get a chance to she on their duet, "Comg Together, " which Sirone plays twistg, high-register harmonics on his bass that sound a b like Gayle's squealg saxophone.

Always Born is more rtraed than much of Gayle's later work, but his teractn wh Tchii and the fe playg om Sirone and Nicholson are not to be missed. "Charl Gayle is rvg out a ee jazz that is mcular, impassned, clearly stctured, and wonrfully volatile.

So one day Steve wrote a rd to me wh a uple of suggtns for artists likely to be of tert to Silkheart, and one of them was Charl Gayle. Some ltle while later Lars and I got together and talked about Steve's tape and about Charl Gayle. We left on that note, but some weeks afterwards Lars was New York on bs and had the opportuny of hearg the Charl Gayle Tr at the "Kntg Factory" East Hoton Street.

He me back to Stockholm shortly before Christmas full of enthiasm for Gayle's mic, havg clearly heard thgs durg the personal appearance that he hadn't ear on Steve's tape. It was agreed that Silkheart arrange to rerd Gayle wh a tr, and was also cid to rerd him as part of a quartet wh John Tchii alongsi. Sirone was chosen as the bassist for the Charl Gayle Tr and seemed also an appropriate choice for the quartet.

It was cid that the Chigoan, Reggie Nicholson, now based New York, would perform wh the quartet while Gayle's regular dmmer, Dave Pleasant, would rerd wh the tr. The qutn of rehearsals was brought up, but Charl Gayle was que adamant; there were to be none. Gayle don't plan what he's gog to play until he plays , although would as likely as not be high energy; It was this spir that he aimed to go to the stud and simply play his mic.

Charl Gayle is extremely forceful when he needs to be and there were ocsns durg the early part of the quartet rerdg ssn when this was necsary. Gayle explaed that he uld play many kds of mic and specific circumstanc he played what was appropriate. At the outset there were several vlent exprsns of tent om Gayle and a fair number of mil upsets. Gayle is heard elsewhere the right channel, wh Tchii the left channel where he n be easily regnized by his more stacto approach and his uier tenor sound.

Gayle utiliz a variety of approach to each piece he plays, wh, as he puts , "A different range and a different technique.
