Scholars argue that, while the rintial and mercial districts evolved prr to the formatn of anized gay polil anizatns, they suggt that the emergence of the districts as polil and mercial districts was a direct rult of liberate lol gay activism. I argue here that ntrary to this lerature and for much of s history, the gay movement was largely opposed to the existence of specifilly gay-intified spac, particularly those operated by both heterosexual and homosexual bspersons. Toronto's gay activists, g different iologil ameworks, stggled to nstute a homosexual inty that stood maly opposn to the so-lled 'ghetto gay' and to nstct alternative spac that were seen as more appropriate to the formatn of a properly policized homosexual inty. Neverthels, by the early 1980s, as the gay village ntued to thrive and as the players gay movement polics changed, the gay ghetto beme the gay village and was celebrated as a lotn of polil strength and social necsy.
