Thanks to the folks om Mount Gay Rum, who generoly forward some sampl our way, I was able to nduct an illumatg, four-bottle horizontal tastg om the world’s olst mercial m distillery, wh bottle pric rangg om the affordable ($20) to the nt ($150). Mount Gay Eclipse (Gold).
REVIEW: MOUNT GAY BLACK BARREL RUM
Note that this tastg we’ve chewed the venerable Mount Gay Silver, which is an unaged m, and skipped straight to the first entry the distillery’s aged seri, Eclipse. Although I’m often happy to drk bottom-shelf whiskey neat, the thner body and rougher edg of Eclipse ( parison wh the olr bottl om Mount Gay) means I see this stuff as more appropriate for mixg. MOUNT GAY ECLIPSE RUM
No product the Mount Gay lp mak the brand’s marketg and mographic tentns so clear as Black Barrel, which all but screams “I am a m for whiskey drkers.
” This one is fished ed bourbon barrels, and is bottled at a slightly higher strength than the Eclipse, 43% ABV (86 proof)—which is also the proof of Mount Gay XO Rerve and Mount Gay 1703 Master Select. In troducg the lastt Mount Gay master work last night, Browne observed that jt like Mount Gay’s regular 80- and 86-proof Eclipse Rums, the new 100-proof Eclipse Black is a blend of distctive Mount Gay ms aged two to seven years.
The difference producg the 100-proof blend is that Mount Gay adds ls water to the product.
