It has been argued that gay men who live Wtern societi mt negotiate mascule inti agast a cultural backdrop where the most sirable and lolly hegemonic masculy is heterosexual. However, ntemporary masculy theori nceptualize masculi as creasgly clive of gay men. The purpose of this study was to e a disurse-dynamic approach to studyg mascule subjectivy to intify how gay men England and Wal negotiated masculy disurs to nstct their mascule inti. One-to-one, semi-stctured terviews were unrtaken wh six younger gay men aged 20 to 24, and 11 olr gay men aged 30 to 42. Participants were asked to scribe their subjective experienc of masculy. The rults of an Interpretative Phenomenologil Analysis dited that disurs of hegemonic and alternative masculi had implitns for lived experienc of masculy. Olr participants particular emphasized their attribut they associated wh mascule domance, cludg anti-effemacy attus. The majory of younger participants did not feel mascule. Irrpective of age, many participants risted hegemonic masculy by highlightg the value of “gayns” at tim. The fdgs suggted that hegemonic masculy was the most readily available disurse for nceptualizg masculy, but that lived experienc of masculy were not necsarily loted wh this disurse.

Fdgs shown Figure 1 nsir timat of the percentage of adults who self-intify as lbian, gay, or bisexual across ne surveys nducted wh the past seven years. While the surveys show a fairly wi variatn the overall percentage of adults who intify as LGB, the proportn who intify as lbian/gay vers bisexual is somewhat more nsistent (see Figure 2). In six of the surveys, lbian- and gay-intified dividuals outnumbered bisexuals.
In most s, the surveys were roughly 60% lbian/gay vers 40% bisexual. The UK Integrated Hoehold Survey found the proportn to be two-thirds lbian/gay vers one-third bisexual.
