In 2003, when Massachetts beme the first state to legalize same-sex marriage, nearly two-thirds (65 percent) of religly unaffiliated Amerins supported same-sex marriage, but there were no major relig groups which a majory favored allowg gay and lbian upl to marry. And while the Catholic Church officially oppos the legalizatn of same-sex marriage, about six ten whe (61 percent), Hispanic (60 percent), and other non-whe Catholics (60 percent) support allowg gay and lbian upl to marry legally. On the other si of the bate, majori of Jehovah’s Wns (75 percent), Mormons (68 percent), whe evangelil Prottants (66 percent), Hispanic Prottants (58 percent), and black Prottants (54 percent) oppose allowg gay and lbian upl to marry legally.
Among all religly affiliated Amerins, 47 percent favor allowg gay and lbian upl to marry, pared to 45 percent who oppose.
Based on terviews wh more than 42, 000 Amerins nducted between May and December 2015, PRRI fds that 53% of Amerins support allowg gay and lbian people to legally marry, while 37% are opposed. More than seven ten (71%) young adults (age 18 to 29) favor allowg gay and lbian upl to marry, pared to roughly four ten (41%) senrs (age 65 and olr).

At least three-quarters of Buddhists (85%), the religly unaffiliated (78%), and Jewish Amerins (76%) favor allowg gay and lbian to marry. In ntrast, majori of black Prottants (54%), Hispanic Prottants (59%), Mormons (66%), whe evangelil Prottants (67%), and Jehovah’s Wns (72%) oppose allowg gay and lbian upl to marry.
Roughly two-thirds (66%) of Democrats favor allowg gay and lbian upl to marry, while fewer than three ten (27%) are opposed.
GAY MARRIAGE OPN AND RELIGN
Polil pennts are closer to Democrats than Republins on this issue: a majory (58%) favor allowg gay and lbian upl to marry. Young adults (age 18 to 29) exprs the hight level of opposn (67%), while senrs (age 65 and olr) are somewhat more divid: a majory (53%) oppose allowg small bs owners to ny service to gay and lbian people on relig grounds, while approximately four ten (39%) favor such a policy. Black (67%) and Hispanic (66%) Amerins exprs the most opposn to allowg small bs owners to ny products or servic to gay or lbian people if dog so vlat their relig beliefs, followed by Asian-Pacific Islanr Amerins (62%).

More than seven ten Unarian Universalists (83%), Jewish Amerins (72%), and unaffiliated Amerins (71%) oppose allowg religly based service refals of gay or lbian people, as do approximately two-thirds of Hispanic Catholics (68%), Buddhists (68%), black Prottants (67%), Orthodox Christians (66%), Mlims (65%), and Hd (64%). Majori of Hispanic Prottants (58%), whe Catholics (58%), and whe male Prottants (56%) also oppose religly based service refals of gay or lbian people. About half of Jehovah’s Wns (50%) and other non-whe Prottants (48%) oppose religly based service refals to gay or lbian people.

While more than six ten (63%) nservative Republins favor allowg small bs owners to refe service to gay or lbian people on relig grounds, morate and liberal Republins disagree.
