mb-7"><p>On a cloudy Saturday late May, several hundred activists gathered on the Riegelmann Boardwalk Brighton Beach to send a msage to their neighbors the Rsian-speakg muny: we’re here, we’re queer, and we’re not gog anywhere. </p><p>Ntled on Brooklyn’s southern shore, Brighton Beach, a.k.a. “Ltle Ossa,” has served as a sort of p-stop for migrants om the former Soviet Unn for s. Although the neighborhood’s nickname was earned after a new wave of former Soviet migrants settled the area startg the 1970s, the mographics of newers have changed over time. </p><p>Wh <a href=" target="_blank" rel="noopener">nearly 70 percent</a> of the populatn born abroad, Eastern European culture ns ep. “There is a borough New York where we n go bee we’ll be Rsia aga,” noted Elvira Brodskaya, a lbian origally om St. Petersburg. But that faiary n be a double-edged sword. Here, on the southern shor of Brooklyn, bly, pelmeni, and borscht n be found abundance, but so n some of the regn’s more nservative and reprsive attus.</p><p>The march was led by RUSA-LGBT, an activist anizatn found by Yelena Goltsman 2008, which has rved out a niche for self as beg one of the few Rsian-speakg LGBTQ-advocy groups the Uned Stat terg to emigr om the former Soviet Unn, and s members are as diverse as the former Soviet regn self. Here, Azerbaijanis, Ukraians, Geians, Uzbeks, Rsians, and numero other natnali are uned through their shared language and their mon e: human rights for all. </p><p>Goltsman creds RUSA-LGBT -print Lyosha Gorshkov as beg the drivg force behd Brighton Beach Pri. Gorshkov—a former profsor at Perm State Universy the Urals—ced both Tmp’s electn and exasperatn wh the rampant homophobia Rsian-speakg enclav Sheepshead Bay, Brighton Beach, and Kgs Highway. Dpe g to the Uned Stat July 2014 an effort to flee anti-gay persecutn, he and other LGBTQ Rsian-speakg rints say verbal and physil abe ntue to be very real problems here Brooklyn. </p><p>“I got angry, thkg, we had managed to pe om homophobia our untri, and we were still unsafe those Rsian-speakg areas NYC,” Gorshkov said. “It was a flashback to the Soviet Unn... Safety was an obv ncern, and the small phalanx of NYPD officers that greeted me as I walked om the Q tra stop at Ocean Parkway remaed a nstant prence as we wanred down the boardwalk. Although the event took place largely whout a hch, some onlookers weren’t necsarily iendly observers. RTVi, a Rsian-language televisn work, spoke to one bystanr who openly advoted for stratn; another asserted the event was an “embarrassment.” </p><p>At the rally, journalist Masha Gsen praised the participants for proudly marchg the face of such timidatn. “Pri is polil," Gsen said. "Pri is about gog to a place where n be ighteng, where not everyone has e to see LGBTQ people as human begs. But ’s also what solidary looks like."</p><p>The neighborhood’s first Rsian-speakg pri para at a ntent time for both Amerin and Rsian polics—Brighton Beach was one of the few New York Cy districts to swg heavily for Tmp. In addn the smatterg of “No Tmp / No KKK” and “Drive Out the Pence/Tmp Regime” signs that have bee stapl at nearly any left-of-center prott the Tmp era, marchers ma a pot of portrayg the two officials as cut om a siar cloth. One chant, a nod to Brighton’s polil proclivi, pronounced: “Brighton-Brighton, we love you! Tmp and Put—bad for you!” </p><p>Gorshkov se a direct nnectn between support for Tmp and Rsian Print Vladimir Put. “I was not surprised though that Brighton Beach voted for [Tmp],” he noted, “as many people livg there are attracted to Put even though they never lived a mute unr the Put’s regime.” Many of the Pri marchers, cludg Gorshkov and several speakers, are recent recipients of asylum stat, while many of their olr neighbors have been livg the U.S. for s. </p><p>In addn to targetg Put, the Brighton Beach march lled attentn to the ongog, ernment-sponsored extermatn of the gay muny Chechnya, Rsia’s tumultuo semi-tonomo southern republic. In early April, Novaya Gazeta—a Rsian newspaper known for s vtigative work—reported that nearly 100 men had been taed “ nnectn wh their nontradnal sexual orientatn, or spicn of such.” Chechen lear Ramzan Kadyrov has sce nied the allegatns, and one of his spokmen even went so far as to assert that such reports were prepostero bee sexual mori “jt don’t exist the republic.” </p><p>As the rally me to a close and participants drifted off, some leisurely wanrg to a LGBTQ-iendly fe up the street, I ught up wh Goltsman. “This is what pri looks like.
