To say that beg queer metro Detro has been an emotnal roller aster the last few years would be an the past two years alone, the olst gay bar the cy, The Woodward Bar & Grill — ually shortened to jt “The Woodward” and maybe even “The Woody” for those eper the scene — tragilly burned down, leavg a void of plac for lol queers to gather. It was the latt a strg of closur of gay bars the cy proper, cludg Briggs Detro and Club Gold the upsi, March, the state of Michigan amend the long-standg Elltt-Larsen Civil Rights Act to clu addnal protectns for LGBTQ+ rints, culmatg a hard-fought battle that uld only have been won wh a Democratic majory across the Legislature, somethg the state hasn’t seen s.
And while some bars have closed, Gigi’s Gay Bar near the Detro-Dearborn borr has stood the tt of time, celebratg s 50th anniversary this the way, queer rints the regn have ntued to do what they’ve always done: beg here, and gettg ed to .
