When me out the summer of 1984, Jeff Kanew’s edy was a feel-good revenge story about plucky antihero who wanted to make the world safe for opprsed weirdos everywhere. Now, the film is more than a ltle problematic.</p><p>Immortalized along wh Booger’s belchg and Poxter’s hip-hop vl-sawg are the nerds’ secret filmg of naked sorory women and, pecially, horn-rimmed Lewis Skolnick’s nqut of Betty the cheerlear while wearg a mask and pretendg to be her boyiend. (“I do thk that scene need to be flhed out,” Julia Montgomery, who played Betty and is now a Los Angel Realtor, says today.) For the movie's 35th anniversary, <em>GQ</em> talked to the st and wrers—verg the good, the bad, and the ke-fueled, behd-the-scen shenanigans.</p><hr/><p><em>Miguel Tejada-Flor and Tim Metlfe wrote the origal script based on Tejada-Flor’s father, a “brilliant, brilliant nerd” who immigrated om Bolivia to the muny of mischievo hackers and scientists at Caltech. “Pasana was a terrtrial paradise for nerds,” he says.</em></p><div class="Contaer-bkChBi byNLHx"></div><p><strong>Ted Field</strong> (<em>producer</em>): The tle <em>Revenge of the Nerds</em> was somethg I me up wh. One was <em>Bachelor Party</em>, one was <em>Gimme an 'F,'</em> about cheerlear mp, and the other was <em>Revenge of the Nerds</em>. I said, "That sounds stupid." But I realized, "I relate to this."</p><hr/><p><em>The first key stg choice was Curtis Armstrong as Booger, a c outst wh crazy hair and a leather jacket. Armstrong had jt been </em> Risky Bs.</p><p><strong>Zacharias</strong>: We thought, "If we get him, we've got a h." And we were right. [<em>Revenge of the Nerds</em>] allowed me to do somethg other than N----- #36, exce my French.</p><p><strong>Kanew:</strong> Bobby Carrade said, "Look, I don't know what I'm dog here—I'm not a nerd, I'm probably a guy who would beat up a nerd." He ed to drive fast rs on Mulholland Drive, and he was a Carrade brother. The optometrist out: "Can I help you?" I go, "Yeah, but not at this price." He says, "You've got to be reful what you put ont of your ey, young man." I said 's for an dn and I whispered, "It's to play a nerd." The guy, a loud voice, says, "A nerd? Yeah, I n fix you up!"</p><p><strong>Stt:</strong> What was big back then was <em>Flashdance</em>. Jennifer Beals. I went [to the dn] drsed as close to her as I uld.</p><p><strong>Tim Bfield</strong> (<em>Poxter</em>): [For the dn] I'd taken Michael Jackson's "Billie Jean" and had a ltle Walkman, and went and did Poxter's dance the movie. So I asked the stud if they would send me to the lotn two weeks early jt so I uld get to the zone.</p><p>I brought a remote-ntrolled mol airplane to put together. I didn't brg any of my civilian cloth. All I brought was nerd wardrobe. And I didn't leave my hotel room for three days—I was jt too embarrassed. Fally, I need a part ma and I lled the Universy of Arizona metal-shop guy and he said, "Yeah, e on over, give me the specifitns and I'll build for you." And I had to drs up as Lewis and step out of the door. To my astonishment, no one reacted. They jt thought I was an engeerg stunt.</p><p><strong>Julia Montgomery</strong> (<em>Betty</em>): The script was mimal for Betty. Those of who weren't the nerds didn't have the same kds of rehearsals.</p><p><strong>Armstrong:</strong> I was pickg my nose and belchg. And what was first my md was all of my actg teachers om the Amy of Dramatic Art at Oakland Universy.</p><div data-attr-viewport-monor="le-recirc" class="le-recirc-wrapper le-recirc-observer-target-3 viewport-monor-anchor"></div><p><strong>Carrade:</strong> About a week before the filmg, Anthony [Edwards, who played Gilbert] showed up and we went over to the mp and tried to sh the aterni. By that time, everybody on mp knew the nerds were g, except this one aterny.</p><p>This guy tak to the ner sanctum of the aterny, and there's the head guy, he's got one of those helmets on wh the two beers attached to and the tub g down to his mouth. He says, "Hey, Biff!"—or whatever the guy's name was—"the guys want to sh."</p><p>He turned around and looked at Anthony and me and jt said, "No way," and went back to the party. That's how I knew we had figured out.</p><p><strong>Montgomery:</strong> The send I met him, Bobby was character.</p><p><strong>Carrade:</strong> I thk was Curtis who me up to me. He said, "I get ." I said, "Get what?" He said, "You're playg for real." I said, "Yeah. The guys don't <em>know</em> they're nerds." Stt [who played Lamar] was, I gus you'd say, ad set on makg sure that the entire town of Tucson knew that he was not actually gay.</p><p><strong>Stt:</strong> I would like to say e back then was rather prevalent. Not what you would expect om his character. Stt had the flu and uld only film one take—then he returned to the hotel to hurl). Booger ws another ntt wh a temptuo belch that, he later learned, volved an overdub of a mel havg an asm. And the nerds w the mic petn wh a Devo-like electro-rap—renowned vlist Thomas Newman tght Bfield how to play the solo.</em></p><div data-attr-viewport-monor="le-recirc" class="le-recirc-wrapper le-recirc-observer-target-7 viewport-monor-anchor"></div><p><strong>Kanew:</strong> [At one pot] the jocks, spired by John Goodman as the ach, n out of the locker room and wreck the nerds' hoe. I filmed that great tail—there's a lot of smashg and crashg and there's a nontatn. Ogre throws Anthony Edwards off the porch and 's bullyg. That was an important moment the movie, but that had to go. The dience is havg a good time and they're horrified by what's happeng. Now you watch the movie, the jocks kick the fence and go si the hoe and 's cut—and the nerds are pickg up the aftermath.</p><p><strong>McGley:</strong> I had animosy towards [the nerds]. I jt thought they were dicks. Ha. The first two weeks we did not termgle. I had nothg to do wh them.</p><p>It wasn't until much later that started to loosen up.</p><p><strong>Tochi:</strong> Bobby had a bowl of cereal on the uch watchg the naked sorory chicks. He was actually eatg his cereal beer.</p><p><strong>Armstrong:</strong> They had schled, outsi the talent petn, somethg on my own, which was lip-syncg [Elvis] Prley dog "Ameri the Betiful," which I had been rehearsg my bedroom wh the first VHS player I had ever seen. The night of the rerdg, the producer and director said, "We n't do that, 's gog to slow everythg down." And I wd up dog Prley the [scene] and no one knows why that is.</p><p><strong>Stt:</strong> They tried to brg a choreographer wh . I was like, "Psssh, damn the choreographer." Me and Andrew worked that sh out on our own. Andrew was actually a really good dancer.</p><p><strong>Tochi:</strong> I got so much sh om Asian enti, newspapers, mentators and groups sayg that I kd of perpetuated the Asian stereotype. But what ma different wh me—first of all, at the time, I was one of the very Asian few actors TV or film. Y, was a stereotype, but we were playg real people. We had heart and the film had heart. I thought, "Fuck 'em!" You know?</p><hr/><p><em>Lewis, our hero, gets the girl the end—but the creepit way possible. After Betty and her jock boyiend, Stan, have a fight, Lewis picks up Stan’s disrd Halloween stume and begs to have sex wh her. When she fally learns his inty, she’s happy. There should've been one more beat this scene—somethg else, somethg add, even if Betty had phed him or slapped him or somethg.</p><p><strong>Carrade:</strong> It wasn't until recently that people started to pot that scene out and put a negative light. It was never our tentn to have anythg but a funny scene where I get the girl.</p><p><strong>Bfield:</strong> The movie would've been jt fe whout . He uld've found another way to w the girl over.</p><p><strong>Zacharias:</strong> I regret that. I've wrten a play for the mil and I elimated the rape scene. I ma that Betty was thrown off the cheerlear squad bee she flunked trigonometry and Lewis teach her trigonometry and then before the rape scene he reveals who he is and she wants to have sex wh him. I also regret the vio scene. It would be goofy enough if they jt did a panty raid and played really nerdy.</p><p><strong>McGley:</strong> I got screwed, for sure. Stan got the short end of that al. Lewis is gog to jail!
