Wh the arrival of Molly Shannon and Cheri Oteri, and, the followg year, Ana Gasteyer, “S.N.L.” saw a new re of female st members who fought for time on the air, enuraged each other to succeed, and took ownership of their performance styl. The women paved the way for subsequent generatns of female st members—Rachel Dratch, Ta Fey, Amy Poehler, Maya Rudolph, and, later, Kristen Wiig—who ntued to bolster the posn of women on the show and, the procs, beme some of the biggt nam, male or female, edy today.</em></p><p class="paywall"><strong>PAULA PELL, wrer, 1995-prent:</strong> Ta Fey is a very old iend of me and I adore her. But I thk there’s a ltle b of foggs about what me before her. And ’s always bothered me bee I was here before Ta me, and [startg 1995] there was an amazg female prence at the show. The <em>Rollg Stone</em> ver that we did durg that time featured Molly Shannon and Cheri Oteri as Mary Kathere and the Cheerlears [rpectively]. They were stars, and I thk those women set the tone. The three of them—Molly, Cheri and later Ana Gasteyer—were headlg three-quarters of the show.</p><p class="paywall"><strong>MAYA RUDOLPH, st member, 2000-2007:</strong> I remember, very clearly, watchg Molly on TV dog Mary Kathere Gallagher. It was the Gabriel Byrne show. She was the school gym and she ends up <a href=">fallg back on all the chairs</a>. At the time, I was playg wh a band, and we were all on tour and we were watchg the show and I remember gog, “Holy sh! What is that?”</p><p class="paywall"><strong>PAULA PELL:</strong> There was somethg about Molly beg this weird loser-y girl smellg her ps and mumblg to herself, that jt ma people e to her. I thk Molly is a really great actor and she was really g at om the si out, as opposed to jt applyg a silly wig and sayg, “I’m dog this character.” But I also thk she had a fearlsns. She’d jt set her scene up and say, “I want the chairs like that.” And then on the live show she would jt n to them. I mean, those foldg chairs hurt when you fall to them. And she ick’ bised the sh out of herself but she would get and applse and people would go ape sh.</p><div data-attr-viewport-monor="le-recirc" class="le-recirc-wrapper le-recirc-observer-target-1 viewport-monor-anchor"></div><p class="paywall"><strong>CINDY CAPONERA, wrer, 1995-1998:</strong> When Molly and Cheri and Ana joed the st, that was when the women beme way stronger than the men, ially. I mean, nobody do sketch like Jan Hooks, but Jan Hooks was not the star of the show. But here we had three very, very, very strong women that everybody wrote for. They were aggrsive. They were amb—and rightfully so. I also thk they succeed bee they all me at the same time. Everyone was a posn to make change. It was a level playg field.</p><p class="paywall"><strong>PAULA PELL:</strong> Cheri was very termed, too, very termed to wre and take re of herself, and make sure that she was gettg stuff on. I always lled Cheri “the terrier” bee she has such an adorable ltle ame, and when she would play that dg lady [a character who was hopped up on prcriptn medice] she ed to make me lgh so hard. She also had guts—I don’t know how to scribe except that ’s like that old school of edy where you’re jt balls-to-the-wall. If ’s not gog well you’re gonna make sure you amp up so when you leave the scene you’re gonna get a huge lgh. She always ed to do that. She’d leave a sketch wh her ltle part and do some ltle butt jig or somethg and jt get a huge lgh.</p><p class="paywall"><strong>ANA GASTEYER, st member, 1996-2002:</strong> We had so much airtime. Those first three years were crazy. It was me, Cheri, and Molly. And every sgle week each of had a heavily featured personal character, which by parison to the men was a lot, if you figure that there’s like eight scen a night. So the takeaway for so many people was, like, the women, the women, the women.</p><p class="paywall">Don’t get me wrong, everybody played plenty of whor and wiv. My first time on the show, I was a G-strg. It was this <a data-offer-url=" class="external-lk" data-event-click="{"element":"ExternalLk","outgogURL":"" href=" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">Caribbean Essenc mercial parody</a> wh Tracy Man beg a Rastafarian. I don’t even know what the hell was. Anyway, we were all supposed to be a big like hot tub vered wh bubbl. And we were G-strgs and practilly nu and vered bubbl, the three of the tub as the, like, body girls. I remember Molly beg really mad about . It was the first thg I’d ever done so I was kd of like, “This is icky and embarrassg but ’s also part of your job to reprent Ameri. It’s te for all people new to the show. But ’s pecially te for the women bee the guys don’t tend to wre the women’s character sketch. So you really have to make sure that you’re brgg stuff to the show and gettg people on board wh , or creatg wh people here.</p><div class="Contaer-bkChBi byNLHx"></div><p class="paywall"><strong>ANA GASTEYER:</strong> The women, at least my generatn, tend to e at almost entirely om a character standpot. Certaly Molly, Shannon, Cheri Oteri, me, Rachel Dratch, Maya Rudolph and Amy Poehler—well, Amy’s maybe a ltle more tellectual that way—but pretty much all of would start wh a nceptn of the character and then fd the suatn or the nce that would drive the edy thereafter. [The alternative is for a sketch to be] premise-driven—a joke that starts the whole ia.</p><p class="paywall"><strong>EMILY SPIVEY, wrer, 2001-2010:</strong> I wish there was a way that character piec weren’t perceived as feme and ncept piec weren’t perceived as more mascule, but that’s jt the way is. Perhaps I’m speakg out of turn, but I feel like a lot of the character stuff is generated by women. Pla is rponsible for a lot of great characters, and I hate to say , but is sort of the realm of women and gay guys—they wre all the character stuff.</p><p class="paywall">The one thg that is dicey is perd stuff, and nursg, and thgs like that. That’s where guys are like, Ugh, that’s never, ever gonna fly. I had a sketch that almost got on wh Ran Wilson about a guy that wanted to watch a lady breast-feed. It got a big lgh at the table, but I thk the guys were still like, Okay, that’s a ltle too much to the blogil areas—like, we don’t wanna thk of you havg your perd and we don’t wanna thk of you as a food source.</p><div data-attr-viewport-monor="le-recirc" class="le-recirc-wrapper le-recirc-observer-target-2 viewport-monor-anchor"></div><p class="paywall"><strong>PAULA PELL:</strong> I thk the fear was if a scene was about some female issue, was gog to have hard jok. We don’t do subtle ltle observatnal thgs. It’s gotta have hard jok and has to have some observatn wh an edge. For example, I wrote a thg back that day lled “<a href=">Kotex Classic</a>.” It was a mercial parody for Kotex and was mentg on “classic” thgs g back, like Coke Classic. And that’s where I got the ia: what if ’s somethg classic that isn’t good, like this horrible pad and belt that thank God we don’t have anymore. So there was a ncept behd , which they like to have, and the ia was a new kd of Kotex, where they’re gog back to the old kd of Kotex that had the belts. And when you first pch thgs like that, about a pad or whatever, there’s always the worry, “Well, how’s gonna work?” And I thk Lorne, bee he’s a sixty-somethg-year-old man, is squeamish about any female thg like that, as many men are. But I thk as celebri beme more like Courtney Love, and wh Molly, pecially, have such abandon and g out and showg her unrpants [as Mary Kathere Gallagher], we uld wre harsher, crazier, harr thgs for women.</p><p class="paywall"><strong>KRISTEN WIIG, st member, 2005-2012:</strong> A character’s not me but om me—’s an observatn of a person the world. It’s a person that you want to sort of vent and show people. I do a character named <a href=">Aunt Lda</a> on [Weekend] Update. She’s like a movie cric. But that me om a woman who was on a plane wh me once. I thk she was watchg “The Matrix” on the -flight movie. She was so nfed as to what was gog on and was so loud about and jt kept lookg at everyone like, “What? Where…where are they?” I was lghg so hard and I jt kept wrg down thgs that she was sayg.</p><p class="paywall"><strong>CINDY CAPONERA:</strong> Cheri and Molly were old-school. When Ta me, [the show] beme what I feel is ls character-driven. Any given show had like two or three strong character piec, and then you had the piece that kd of ate self. You uld see what the ncept was, [and was g om] the nerdy Harvard guys. They were really nceptual. They were all about edy beg smart as opposed to character-driven and so that was a big clash of the tans. So Cheri and Molly were more old-school. And Ta’s super, super funny, but not big on character.</p><p class="paywall"><strong>PAULA PELL:</strong> Startg probably wh Janeane Garofalo, and that era of stand-up ladi who were startg to be more bray and strong and clever, guys started noticg those girls as sexy smart. I always lled smarxy. It’s like that sexy smart girl who’s cute but also knows how to s and talk to me about some nerd thg or Star Wars. And I thk Ta was one of those people, the braniac, the nerd. She tapped to that and Liz Lemon [om “30 Rock”] taps to that.</p><p class="paywall"><strong>ANA GASTEYER:</strong> The ma thg that Ta do that’s so brilliant is asssg pop culture an unpromisg way. She will say what most people are too aaid to say on any subject pop culture. So that I thk that was very much her fluence on the show’s wrg terms of what she was able to kd of addrs and take down. Bis beg a very talented wrer, she was fearls about phg an ia through and sayg, “No, we need to say somethg about that.” Lorne loved that about her. Also I thk helps any edy room for a woman to have very strong, rpected nvictns, bee then opens the door up a ltle b for other women to have that.</p><p class="paywall"><strong>MAYA RUDOLPH:</strong> To me, Ta’s edy is a batn of beg credibly bright and credibly fierce. If we are all stg the room and we’re watchg somethg on TV and we’re all baggg on somebody, she’ll always nail a funny way. As a wrer I always noticed that she uld exprs exactly what she means and she n fd the funny part.</p><p class="paywall"><strong>PAULA PELL:</strong> When they cid to have Amy [Poehler] do Update wh Ta there was a discsn on Ta’s part about what kd of energy she wants next to her. And the qutn was, Who’s the funnit person that uld be out there wh her? But Update is a lite thg, you don’t really know until you do , and wh Update you’re always tryg a new batn. Jimmy [Fallon] was a very specific kd of energy, so you didn’t wanna replace that wh the same thg.</p><div data-attr-viewport-monor="le-recirc" class="le-recirc-wrapper le-recirc-observer-target-3 viewport-monor-anchor"></div><p class="paywall"><strong>MATT BESSER, foundg member of the Upright Cizens Briga:</strong> Amy’s a b younger than the rt of the UCB [members], so she me to Chigo after . At that moment time… I would say the improv world general, there jt were not that many women. There were very few that uld hang wh the guys. But wh six months of beg town, Amy was turng heads. She was jt startg out and everybody wanted to play wh her. She was on a group right away, which is a ltle unual. And her first [improv] group had Ta Fey, too, oddly enough, and they beme great iends and soon domated their group. And to have two women be the domant force a group was unheard of—that jt never happened. And as this was happeng, my group also had a sketch group lled the Upright Cizens Briga, which had been around sce 1990, ’91. And we did one or two shows a year. And we asked Amy to do the show, which was new for , too, bee we had never had a woman the sketch group.</p><p class="paywall"><strong>MAYA RUDOLPH:</strong> If you go to eat wh Amy, ’s like, “Alright, let’s orr. Do everybody know what they are gog to get?” She’s charge, she’s the lear, she’s like, “We’re not wastg any time, let’s do this.” And the most lovg way, I n say, she’s credibly bossy. And I fuckg love that about her. And I love the batn of the fact that she is a teeny ty person and she’s really tough. I mean, she’s om Boston. And she has this very sort of aware East Coast way of lookg at thgs. I thk the term blue llar has been said by her many tim terms of like a way of lookg at life—’s like, “There are no ee ris. I am gog to fuckg make my time on this earth.”</p><p class="paywall"><strong>CASEY WILSON, featured player, 2008-2009:</strong> Amy Poehler’s like a cheerlear—kd of like a mama bear. She wanted the other women to succeed and that’s trickled down to Kristen, and then trickled down to me. I thk people want there to be some sort of fd or tensn, but ’s like “Why n only one of do well?” One time I remember we were dog a “Mad Men” sketch, and I was playg the redhead. And I had a funny b where basilly I me and dropped off some papers, but I didn’t have a le. It wasn’t even Amy’s sketch, but she piped up and said to the wrers, “Let’s give Casey a funny le when she .” She didn’t have to do that.</p><p class="paywall"><strong>MATT BESSER:</strong> A big cricism of the sketch world and the improv world is that is a boys’ club, and a lot of the boys would always go, “Hey, we’re not kickg girls out! They’re jt not hangg wh onstage. We don’t not want to have a woman onstage, ’s jt when they are onstage they are always playg a wife or a ltle girl or a nun. They are always playg female archetyp rather than jt playg.” And I thk that’s what Amy and Ta both did. They would e out and play a tck driver. They wouldn’t jt e out and play femal—they were gog to be edians. The days you don’t thk of Amy as a female edian, you jt thk of her as a edian, and I thk that’s a pl. And she didn’t go for that whole notn that women are not treated fairly. She was jt like “I’m jt gog to do my bt and not give a sh,” and worked. She didn’t re about beg pretty and daty on stage, or charmg, or all those thgs you might say about a succsful s actrs, a prototypil one. She uld be weird or nasty or ugly or whatever. Those are thgs that <em>guys</em> more typilly do. But really ’s what a edian should do and that’s why she is.</p><p class="paywall"><strong>KRISTEN WIIG:</strong> The boys’ club thg, I don’t really know. I was g to a group of really strong, funny women. that charts the role of female edians this untry, om Joan Rivers and Phyllis Diller’s lewd, joke-based night-club gigs of the neteen-fifti to the idsyncratic performanc of the alternative edians Kristen Schaal and Aubrey Plaza today, wh Elae May, Lily Toml, Janeane Garofalo, and many other doyenn of edy terviewed and discsed along the way. The sectn of the book about the women of “Saturday Night Live,” excerpted here, focs on a perd the neteen-neti and early ghts when a group of amb female st members transformed “S.N.L.”—a notor boys’ club sce s first season, 1975—to a space where female edians uld llaborate and thrive.</em></p><div><div class="ConsumerMarketgUnThemedWrapper-iUTMTf jssHut nsumer-marketg-un nsumer-marketg-un--article-mid-ntent" role="prentatn" aria-hidn="te"><div class="nsumer-marketg-un__slot nsumer-marketg-un__slot--article-mid-ntent nsumer-marketg-un__slot---ntent"></div><div class="journey-un"></div></div></div><p class="paywall"><em>The show had produced ocsnal female stars, like Gilda Radner and Jan Hooks, durg s first two s, but begng 1995, a fundamental shift the show’s genr balance began to take place. Wh the arrival of Molly Shannon and Cheri Oteri, and, the followg year, Ana Gasteyer, “S.N.L.” saw a new re of female st members who fought for time on the air, enuraged each other to succeed, and took ownership of their performance styl. The women paved the way for subsequent generatns of female st members—Rachel Dratch, Ta Fey, Amy Poehler, Maya Rudolph, and, later, Kristen Wiig—who ntued to bolster the posn of women on the show and, the procs, beme some of the biggt nam, male or female, edy today.</em></p><p class="paywall"><strong>PAULA PELL, wrer, 1995-prent:</strong> Ta Fey is a very old iend of me and I adore her. But I thk there’s a ltle b of foggs about what me before her. And ’s always bothered me bee I was here before Ta me, and [startg 1995] there was an amazg female prence at the show. The <em>Rollg Stone</em> ver that we did durg that time featured Molly Shannon and Cheri Oteri as Mary Kathere and the Cheerlears [rpectively]. They were stars, and I thk those women set the tone. The three of them—Molly, Cheri and later Ana Gasteyer—were headlg three-quarters of the show.</p><p class="paywall"><strong>MAYA RUDOLPH, st member, 2000-2007:</strong> I remember, very clearly, watchg Molly on TV dog Mary Kathere Gallagher. It was the Gabriel Byrne show. She was the school gym and she ends up <a href=">fallg back on all the chairs</a>. At the time, I was playg wh a band, and we were all on tour and we were watchg the show and I remember gog, “Holy sh! What is that?”</p><p class="paywall"><strong>PAULA PELL:</strong> There was somethg about Molly beg this weird loser-y girl smellg her ps and mumblg to herself, that jt ma people e to her. I thk Molly is a really great actor and she was really g at om the si out, as opposed to jt applyg a silly wig and sayg, “I’m dog this character.” But I also thk she had a fearlsns. She’d jt set her scene up and say, “I want the chairs like that.” And then on the live show she would jt n to them. I mean, those foldg chairs hurt when you fall to them. And she ick’ bised the sh out of herself but she would get and applse and people would go ape sh.</p><div data-attr-viewport-monor="le-recirc" class="le-recirc-wrapper le-recirc-observer-target-1 viewport-monor-anchor"></div><p class="paywall"><strong>CINDY CAPONERA, wrer, 1995-1998:</strong> When Molly and Cheri and Ana joed the st, that was when the women beme way stronger than the men, ially. I mean, nobody do sketch like Jan Hooks, but Jan Hooks was not the star of the show. But here we had three very, very, very strong women that everybody wrote for. They were aggrsive. They were amb—and rightfully so. I also thk they succeed bee they all me at the same time. Everyone was a posn to make change. It was a level playg field.</p><p class="paywall"><strong>PAULA PELL:</strong> Cheri was very termed, too, very termed to wre and take re of herself, and make sure that she was gettg stuff on. I always lled Cheri “the terrier” bee she has such an adorable ltle ame, and when she would play that dg lady [a character who was hopped up on prcriptn medice] she ed to make me lgh so hard. She also had guts—I don’t know how to scribe except that ’s like that old school of edy where you’re jt balls-to-the-wall. If ’s not gog well you’re gonna make sure you amp up so when you leave the scene you’re gonna get a huge lgh. She always ed to do that. She’d leave a sketch wh her ltle part and do some ltle butt jig or somethg and jt get a huge lgh.</p><p class="paywall"><strong>ANA GASTEYER, st member, 1996-2002:</strong> We had so much airtime. Those first three years were crazy. It was me, Cheri, and Molly. And every sgle week each of had a heavily featured personal character, which by parison to the men was a lot, if you figure that there’s like eight scen a night. So the takeaway for so many people was, like, the women, the women, the women.</p><p class="paywall">Don’t get me wrong, everybody played plenty of whor and wiv. My first time on the show, I was a G-strg. It was this <a data-offer-url=" class="external-lk" data-event-click="{"element":"ExternalLk","outgogURL":"" href=" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">Caribbean Essenc mercial parody</a> wh Tracy Man beg a Rastafarian. I don’t even know what the hell was. Anyway, we were all supposed to be a big like hot tub vered wh bubbl. And we were G-strgs and practilly nu and vered bubbl, the three of the tub as the, like, body girls. I remember Molly beg really mad about . It was the first thg I’d ever done so I was kd of like, “This is icky and embarrassg but ’s also part of your job to reprent Ameri. It’s te for all people new to the show. But ’s pecially te for the women bee the guys don’t tend to wre the women’s character sketch. So you really have to make sure that you’re brgg stuff to the show and gettg people on board wh , or creatg wh people here.</p><div class="Contaer-bkChBi byNLHx"></div><p class="paywall"><strong>ANA GASTEYER:</strong> The women, at least my generatn, tend to e at almost entirely om a character standpot. Certaly Molly, Shannon, Cheri Oteri, me, Rachel Dratch, Maya Rudolph and Amy Poehler—well, Amy’s maybe a ltle more tellectual that way—but pretty much all of would start wh a nceptn of the character and then fd the suatn or the nce that would drive the edy thereafter. [The alternative is for a sketch to be] premise-driven—a joke that starts the whole ia.</p><p class="paywall"><strong>EMILY SPIVEY, wrer, 2001-2010:</strong> I wish there was a way that character piec weren’t perceived as feme and ncept piec weren’t perceived as more mascule, but that’s jt the way is. Perhaps I’m speakg out of turn, but I feel like a lot of the character stuff is generated by women. Pla is rponsible for a lot of great characters, and I hate to say , but is sort of the realm of women and gay guys—they wre all the character stuff.</p><p class="paywall">The one thg that is dicey is perd stuff, and nursg, and thgs like that. That’s where guys are like, Ugh, that’s never, ever gonna fly. I had a sketch that almost got on wh Ran Wilson about a guy that wanted to watch a lady breast-feed. It got a big lgh at the table, but I thk the guys were still like, Okay, that’s a ltle too much to the blogil areas—like, we don’t wanna thk of you havg your perd and we don’t wanna thk of you as a food source.</p><div data-attr-viewport-monor="le-recirc" class="le-recirc-wrapper le-recirc-observer-target-2 viewport-monor-anchor"></div><p class="paywall"><strong>PAULA PELL:</strong> I thk the fear was if a scene was about some female issue, was gog to have hard jok. We don’t do subtle ltle observatnal thgs. It’s gotta have hard jok and has to have some observatn wh an edge. For example, I wrote a thg back that day lled “<a href=">Kotex Classic</a>.” It was a mercial parody for Kotex and was mentg on “classic” thgs g back, like Coke Classic. And that’s where I got the ia: what if ’s somethg classic that isn’t good, like this horrible pad and belt that thank God we don’t have anymore. So there was a ncept behd , which they like to have, and the ia was a new kd of Kotex, where they’re gog back to the old kd of Kotex that had the belts. And when you first pch thgs like that, about a pad or whatever, there’s always the worry, “Well, how’s gonna work?” And I thk Lorne, bee he’s a sixty-somethg-year-old man, is squeamish about any female thg like that, as many men are. But I thk as celebri beme more like Courtney Love, and wh Molly, pecially, have such abandon and g out and showg her unrpants [as Mary Kathere Gallagher], we uld wre harsher, crazier, harr thgs for women.</p><p class="paywall"><strong>KRISTEN WIIG, st member, 2005-2012:</strong> A character’s not me but om me—’s an observatn of a person the world. It’s a person that you want to sort of vent and show people. I do a character named <a href=">Aunt Lda</a> on [Weekend] Update. She’s like a movie cric. But that me om a woman who was on a plane wh me once. I thk she was watchg “The Matrix” on the -flight movie. She was so nfed as to what was gog on and was so loud about and jt kept lookg at everyone like, “What? Where…where are they?” I was lghg so hard and I jt kept wrg down thgs that she was sayg.</p><p class="paywall"><strong>CINDY CAPONERA:</strong> Cheri and Molly were old-school. When Ta me, [the show] beme what I feel is ls character-driven. Any given show had like two or three strong character piec, and then you had the piece that kd of ate self. You uld see what the ncept was, [and was g om] the nerdy Harvard guys. They were really nceptual. They were all about edy beg smart as opposed to character-driven and so that was a big clash of the tans. So Cheri and Molly were more old-school. And Ta’s super, super funny, but not big on character.</p><p class="paywall"><strong>PAULA PELL:</strong> Startg probably wh Janeane Garofalo, and that era of stand-up ladi who were startg to be more bray and strong and clever, guys started noticg those girls as sexy smart. I always lled smarxy. It’s like that sexy smart girl who’s cute but also knows how to s and talk to me about some nerd thg or Star Wars. And I thk Ta was one of those people, the braniac, the nerd. She tapped to that and Liz Lemon [om “30 Rock”] taps to that.</p><p class="paywall"><strong>ANA GASTEYER:</strong> The ma thg that Ta do that’s so brilliant is asssg pop culture an unpromisg way. She will say what most people are too aaid to say on any subject pop culture. So that I thk that was very much her fluence on the show’s wrg terms of what she was able to kd of addrs and take down. She was fearls a different way than Molly was, but she was fearls terms of jt sayg . I don’t thk Ta’s a person that hated. I thk that’s why she did so great here, too. Bis beg a very talented wrer, she was fearls about phg an ia through and sayg, “No, we need to say somethg about that.” Lorne loved that about her. Also I thk helps any edy room for a woman to have very strong, rpected nvictns, bee then opens the door up a ltle b for other women to have that.</p><p class="paywall"><strong>MAYA RUDOLPH:</strong> To me, Ta’s edy is a batn of beg credibly bright and credibly fierce. If we are all stg the room and we’re watchg somethg on TV and we’re all baggg on somebody, she’ll always nail a funny way. As a wrer I always noticed that she uld exprs exactly what she means and she n fd the funny part.</p><p class="paywall"><strong>PAULA PELL:</strong> When they cid to have Amy [Poehler] do Update wh Ta there was a discsn on Ta’s part about what kd of energy she wants next to her. And the qutn was, Who’s the funnit person that uld be out there wh her? But Update is a lite thg, you don’t really know until you do , and wh Update you’re always tryg a new batn. Jimmy [Fallon] was a very specific kd of energy, so you didn’t wanna replace that wh the same thg.</p><div data-attr-viewport-monor="le-recirc" class="le-recirc-wrapper le-recirc-observer-target-3 viewport-monor-anchor"></div><p class="paywall"><strong>MATT BESSER, foundg member of the Upright Cizens Briga:</strong> Amy’s a b younger than the rt of the UCB [members], so she me to Chigo after . At that moment time… I would say the improv world general, there jt were not that many women. There were very few that uld hang wh the guys. But wh six months of beg town, Amy was turng heads. She was jt startg out and everybody wanted to play wh her. She was on a group right away, which is a ltle unual. And her first [improv] group had Ta Fey, too, oddly enough, and they beme great iends and soon domated their group. And to have two women be the domant force a group was unheard of—that jt never happened. And as this was happeng, my group also had a sketch group lled the Upright Cizens Briga, which had been around sce 1990, ’91. And we did one or two shows a year. And we asked Amy to do the show, which was new for , too, bee we had never had a woman the sketch group.</p><p class="paywall"><strong>MAYA RUDOLPH:</strong> If you go to eat wh Amy, ’s like, “Alright, let’s orr. Do everybody know what they are gog to get?” She’s charge, she’s the lear, she’s like, “We’re not wastg any time, let’s do this.” And the most lovg way, I n say, she’s credibly bossy. And I fuckg love that about her. And I love the batn of the fact that she is a teeny ty person and she’s really tough. I mean, she’s om Boston. And she has this very sort of aware East Coast way of lookg at thgs. I thk the term blue llar has been said by her many tim terms of like a way of lookg at life—’s like, “There are no ee ris. I am gog to fuckg make my time on this earth.”</p><p class="paywall"><strong>CASEY WILSON, featured player, 2008-2009:</strong> Amy Poehler’s like a cheerlear—kd of like a mama bear. She wanted the other women to succeed and that’s trickled down to Kristen, and then trickled down to me. I thk people want there to be some sort of fd or tensn, but ’s like “Why n only one of do well?” One time I remember we were dog a “Mad Men” sketch, and I was playg the redhead. And I had a funny b where basilly I me and dropped off some papers, but I didn’t have a le. It wasn’t even Amy’s sketch, but she piped up and said to the wrers, “Let’s give Casey a funny le when she .” She didn’t have to do that.</p><p class="paywall"><strong>MATT BESSER:</strong> A big cricism of the sketch world and the improv world is that is a boys’ club, and a lot of the boys would always go, “Hey, we’re not kickg girls out! They’re jt not hangg wh onstage. We don’t not want to have a woman onstage, ’s jt when they are onstage they are always playg a wife or a ltle girl or a nun. They are always playg female archetyp rather than jt playg.” And I thk that’s what Amy and Ta both did. They would e out and play a tck driver. They wouldn’t jt e out and play femal—they were gog to be edians. The days you don’t thk of Amy as a female edian, you jt thk of her as a edian, and I thk that’s a pl. And she didn’t go for that whole notn that women are not treated fairly. She was jt like “I’m jt gog to do my bt and not give a sh,” and worked. She didn’t re about beg pretty and daty on stage, or charmg, or all those thgs you might say about a succsful s actrs, a prototypil one. She uld be weird or nasty or ugly or whatever. Those are thgs that <em>guys</em> more typilly do. But really ’s what a edian should do and that’s why she is.</p><p class="paywall"><strong>KRISTEN WIIG:</strong> The boys’ club thg, I don’t really know. I was g to a group of really strong, funny women.
