Eugenicists believed those moral and physil tras were separable, and that children hered them direct and simplistic ways, like eye lor. Therefore, the answer to all of society’s ills lay ntrollg human reproductn: breedg our way to a brighter future.</p></div><div class="article-body" data-qa="article-body"><p data-ttid="drop-p-letter" data-el="text" class="wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css overriStyl font-py" dir="null">Eugenics was largely a rponse to the expand polil, social and geographil tegratn of black people Ameri, and those who practiced were terted protectg and perfectg “the whe race.” The were men like R. W. Shufeldt, a noted doctor wh the U.S. Army and a prolific thor of genic treatis.</p></div><div class="article-body" data-qa="article-body"><p data-ttid="drop-p-letter" data-el="text" class="wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css overriStyl font-py" dir="null">In his 1915 book "Ameri’s Greatt Problem: The Negro," Shufeldt argued that black women sought out whe men bee of their superr gen. "It is the aim and hight ambn of the negrs to have children by whe men," he wrote, "for the reason that such children, by the superr telligence g om their whe fathers, will mand better posns when they grow up than the pure blacks, and so dog will powerfully further the terts, polil and otherwise, of the Ain populatn this untry."</p></div><div class="article-body" data-qa="article-body"><div body (a more sister anctor to our morn ia of beg “born this way”). But he did believe we uld <i>prevent</i> queer people, much the same way we uld prevent racial miscegenatn: by closely policg heterosexualy.</p></div><div class="article-body" data-qa="article-body"><p data-ttid="drop-p-letter" data-el="text" class="wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css overriStyl font-py" dir="null">As he wrote a 1905 paper entled “The Medi-Legal Consiratn of Perverts and Inverts,” he believed that Ameri "will ntue to breed lns of sexual perverts and verts — psychopathic typ — jt so long as any ignorant prit, jtice of the peace or other party, is permted to give people permissn to breed them."</p></div><div class="article-body" data-qa="article-body"><p data-ttid="drop-p-letter" data-el="text" class="wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css overriStyl font-py" dir="null">While this might seem far afield om his wrgs on race, was really jt the other si of the same genics : another effort to protect the whe race through ntrolled breedg. To Shufeldt, black people reprented an external threat to whens, and queer people reprented an ternal one (the existence of black queer people seems never to have entered his md).
