By the 1970’s, San Francis was home to an creasg number of Amerin Indians, cludg an unknown percentage of dividuals who had alternative genr was the ntext that led Randy Burns and Barbara Cameron, wh a small group of iends, to found Gay Amerin Indians (GAI), the first formal anizatn tablished North Ameri by and for gay and lbian Native Amerins. Reportedly, the anizatn had 150 members by the late 1970’s, an ditn of s importance to s the early 1980’s, Will Rose, a rearcher and wrer, beme volved wh GAI, and wh his assistance the Gay Amerin Indian History Project was found 1984.
By this time, the group numbered several hundred members and was still the only North Amerin support anizatn for gay and lbian Amerin this time, AIDS was severely impactg the San Francis gay muny, although the effects on Amerin Indians went unregnized bee the Centers for Disease Control were not llectg statistil data on digeno people wh HIV or AIDS.
