But then Gsberg mted an act so gome, shockg, and jt pla eaky that was clear need to be analyzed greater pth.</p><p data-no-id="2" class="css-aeyldl et3p2gv0">The show has hted at Gsberg's mental illns, off and on, for a while. Neverthels, some viewers may have watched Gsberg's behavr this episo and found a b extreme, even for someone who's openly eccentric. It's one thg to be kd of a weird loudmouth; 's another to be someone so acutely ill that he hurts himself and needs to be hospalized. (I'm bettg that Gsberg is forced to rema the hospal for a ltle while, allowg Betty to vis him there a scene that will nod back to the season-two hospal <a href=" target="_blank" data-vars-ga-outbound-lk=" data-vars-ga-ux-element="Hyperlk" data-vars-ga-ll-to-actn="exchange" class="body-lk css-umdwtv et3p2gv0">exchange</a> between Don and Peggy.)</p><p data-no-id="4" class="css-aeyldl et3p2gv0">The tth is that <em>Mad Men</em> has been htg at Gsberg's terratg mental stabily for some time. Last season, for example, he had a total meltdown before his meetg wh Manischewz, one that volved him quotg Oppenheimer quotg Hdu scripture ("Now I am bee ath, stroyer of two worlds") and ramblg about the transmissns om outer space that were fillg his head. Now "outer space" has been replaced wh the puters the SC&P office, which reprent somethg sister to Michael even if he don't realize exactly what.</p><p data-no-id="6" class="css-aeyldl et3p2gv0">When we first met Michael season five, he immediately prented himself as both a very talented creative and a shaphifter, someone who uld seem pletely nuts a job terview wh Peggy, then immediately turn on the charmg normalcy for Don another terview. Like Don, Michael was a great ia man and a master of pretendg to be someone else. But his abily to throw on alter egos distegrated at a much more rapid pace than Don's did. It's notable that both Don and Michael recently ma scen at the office by exprsg what was really gog on si their heads. The implitn: In advertisg, the fa needs to stay place at all tim.</p><p data-no-id="8" class="css-aeyldl et3p2gv0">Gsberg also has exprsed enough issu regardg homosexualy to make pretty clear he's a closeted gay man. Those homophobic accatns about Jim Cutler and Lou Avery aren't the first time he's wonred about lleagu beg gay. He randomly asked Bob Benson — the only guy able to talk Gsberg down off his Manischewz ledge — if he was gay. Then there's his behavr around women. When he went on a date wh a school teacher the season-five episo <a href="/entertament/tv/reviews/a13587/season-5-episo-4-7962094/" class="css-umdwtv et3p2gv0">"Mystery Date"</a> — the same episo which he shared a very twisted read on the Crella fairy tale — Gsberg beme slightly unhged, admtg to the woman that he had never had sex before. He me on to Peggy this week's episo siarly awkward fashn, notg that they need to reproduce orr to "feat the puter," even though he didn't really want to have sex wh her. Followg that up wh a nfsn to Peggy that he's totally fe now and has feelgs for her — feelgs he n apparently only exprs by surgilly removg a nipple — strongly suggts that Gsberg is torn up, si and out, wh guilt and shame over his sexualy. </p><p data-no-id="10" class="css-aeyldl et3p2gv0">It's the late 1960s, a time when 's supposed to be more acceptable to love eely, to be timate whatever way one choos. But given the fluence of his father, who has always wanted Gsberg to meet a nice girl, and the creasgly stiflg atmosphere at SC&P, 's not surprisg that Michael feels unfortable beg fully himself, that he's experiencg a "prsure" that needs to be relieved. It's much, much easier to blame the IBMs for g that prsure than is to thk might be g om Gsberg's own psyche.</p><p data-no-id="12" class="css-aeyldl et3p2gv0">Michael may not have been right about Jim and Lou beg gay, but he was right that Jim and Lou are workg closely together and may, as Jim once suggted to Ted, attempt to fire every sgle old Sterlg Cooper Draper Pryce employee and start over aga. "Get out while you n!" Gsberg shouted as he was rolled out of the SC&P office on a stretcher after a stricken Peggy lled 911. It sound like the ravgs of a, well, mad man. But actually, might have been a legimate warng. </p><p data-no-id="14" class="css-aeyldl et3p2gv0">Narratively, however, perhaps the biggt reason for Gsberg's nipple rctn was that served as a llback to last season's <a href="/entertament/tv/a22872/mad-men-season-6-episo-10-rep/" class="css-umdwtv et3p2gv0">"A Tale of Two Ci,"</a> the season-six episo which Don Draper was California, went to a party, took a few hs of hashish after an attractive woman promised there was "an extra nipple here" (!!), had a visn of a pregnant Megan, and, eventually, found himself face down a swimmg pool, <em>Sunset Boulevard</em>-<a target="_blank" class="css-umdwtv et3p2gv0">style</a>. (That was the same episo, by the way, which Gsberg had his Manischewz eak-out and said to Bob Benson, "Tell me the tth: Are you a homo?"
