In the early 1990's, an effort to improve muny relatns, the Dallas Police Department created the Lbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgenr, and Queer (LGBTQ+) Liaison posn. In 1998, only two hate crim agast gay victims were reported to the police. Police officers were astute enough to regnize that this statistic did not dite a lack of hate crim, but rather distst between the gay muny and the police force. Metropolan Police Department tablished the Gay and Lbian Liaison Un June 2000.
LBIAN, GAY, BISEXUAL AND TRANSGENR LIAISON UN (LGBTLU)
Gay and Lbian Liaison Un (GLLU) distguish self om other muny police uns by mergg three approach: providg tnal outreach to the gay muny, tg s fellow police officers, and actively participatg day-to-day crime fightg rponsibili. The officers the GLLU vtigate crim mted both agast and by the gay muny and are an active vtigative un. In s outreach work, the GLLU transcends geographic boundari to ntact the gay muny-a populatn that is often difficult to intify and lote wh tradnal policg boundari.
Rather than wag for gay muny members to approach them, the GLLU reach out to the gay muny members their own environment-social functns, memorials, bars, clubs, rtrants, support groups, and muny and anizatnal meetgs. By tegratg themselv the gay muny, the GLLU officers not only tablish themselv as tstworthy but also intify key rmatn sourc for future vtigatns wh the gay muny. The GLLU's peer officer trag further improv both teractns between police officers and the gay muny as well as the succs of vtigatns volvg members of this muny.
This peer officer trag foc on discsg proper termology, gay culture, dynamics of same-genr relatnships and domtic vlence, hate/bias crime vtigatns, and HIV transmissn preventn tn. By tg officers on the cultural differenc, the officers are now more sensive about the gay muny's needs, vulnerabili, and permanent place lol culture.
