"Wayne and I -found The Bookshop bee we travelled to New York and we noticed that gay books were beg advertised all of the gay prs and we thought: 'No-one's dog that at home.
'"So we ntacted St Mart's Prs [ New York] and we bought a uple of books volume, shipped them back to Atralia and advertised them Campaign [a gay Atralian newspaper at the time]. From that, we formed two book clubs - the Gay Book Club and the Lbian Book Club - and we did a lot of mail orr.
"Through the 1980s, The Bookshop worked wh the Sydney Gay and Lbian Mardi Gras, sellg tickets to the para om s upstairs office, and wh Aids Council of New South Wal (ACON), promotg fundraisg events and ralli. "Pl, " remembers Wilks, " the 1960s and 70s, you had to bribe police if you were gog to n an out, gay bs the muny. A few tim, I helped The Bookshop s events, talked to those olr gay men, and saw how relieved they were to be able to speak to someone else.
