Born Glasgow 1969, the actor got his start mercials. He beme que well-known for one particular, where he wore ltle but a kilt wanrg the snowy streets of London warmed by his breakfast of porridge oats. Although he did several film rol om 1999 to 2002, wasn't until he land the role of Kenny McLeod the televisn seri "The Book Group" (BBC 2002-03) that he was wily noticed. His portrayal of the wheelchair-bound lifeguard won him a Sttish BAFTA. The followg year, he land another regular role a televisn seri, this time as Adam the procral drama "Rockface" (BBC 2002-03). After that seri end, McCann ma his way to Hollywood to work on Oliver Stone's "Alexanr" (2004). While on lotn Iceland for the epic fantasy "Beowulf & Grenl" (2005), he fell love wh the untry's wilrns and end up movg there. While he was settlg Iceland, he dned for a new fantasy televisn seri, "Game of Thron" (HBO 2011- ). His take on the role of mercenary Sandor "The Hound" Clegane went on to fe him for years to e. As an extra bon, his sister Sally Gay-McCann, a stume signer for film and televisn, worked on "Game of Thron" as well. McCann ntued to work on var film rol between seasons of "Game of Thron" cludg the New Zealand-based wtern thriller "Slow Wt" (2014), which he -starred wh Michael Fassbenr.
