Gayngs is a Midwt die band wh a 1980s soft rock-spired sound.

In May 2010, Gayngs staged a prom-themed release party for their song “The Last Prom on Earth” at First Avenue Mneapolis. What they didn't know was that would spiral to a project of epic proportns, enlistg the talents of over 25 micians om var scen around the untry, relotg the base of operatns om Olson's Mneapolis bedroom/stud to the Wisns-based stud April Base, and the genis of a mil fay, GAYNGS.

Whatever Olson’s origal tentns, the GAYNGS project soon ballooned to a heartland nglomerate of 25 micians that clud Jt Vernon of Bon Iver, POS of Doomtree, and members of Solid Gold, Megafn, Happy Apple, and The Rosebuds.

I spoke wh Jake by phone after GAYNGS’ first (and Prom-themed) show at the legendary First Avenue Mneapolis (photos here), the events of which me to be sged ep wh Mr. How did you bee volved wh GAYNGS? GAYNGS was the same al.

Before the show at First Avenue, the entirety of GAYNGS holed up for a uple of days at Jt Vernon’s spot E Claire to rehearse. The expectatns put on GAYNGS are so varied that I thk ’s gog to be hard to please everyone. GAYNGS don’t sound like the dividual members’ bands, but do sound like the dividual members, you know what I mean?

A fantastic sophomore album. Hometown: lp: Ryan Olson, pl POS, Dsa, Michael Lewis, and var members of, among others, Bon Iver, Megafn and Solid background: Gayngs are an die supergroup, led by producer Ryan Olson, and their but album Relayted featur as many as 25 micians – members of a variety of Mneapolis bands cludg Solid Gold, Megafn, Lookbook, Leisure Birds, Rhymayers (rapper POS), the Rosebuds and, most famoly, Bon Iver – Mike Noyce appears here on guar and vols, while Jt Vernon lends his sweet falsetto to a uple of this is far, far away om the solate, ld, wtry northwoods b where Vernon rerd the acclaimed lonome sger-songwrer ati of For Emma, Forever Ago.

Gayngs are a stud llective, a large one at that, and Relayted is the rult of much stud procsg. On the Gayngs MySpace, unr "Sounds Like", simply says: "10cc's I'm Not Love.

The pot is, Gayngs, like a lot of ntemporary acts – among them Daft Punk, Air, Monarchy and the late J Dilla – are fally ttong on to the brilliance of 10cc, and we uldn't be more lighted. 10cc beme a byword for stud ventn, and that's what Gayngs have picked up on.

We're not sure whether 10cc's epochal sgle moved at the same speed or if this is a Gayngs tribute to same, but the songs on Relayted strike a siar note of sepulchral slow, stately pace and lh sonics also pot towards, of all thgs, morn hip-hop and R&B as fluenc on Gayngs, as well as 70s symphonic soul (which, of urse, hip-hoppers and R&B producers have been samplg for years). Of all the groups volved Gayngs, is Solid Gold's etlated whe-boy soul that you n hear most clearly, but on Relayted the micians take further – way further, to the pot where some of the tracks sound as much like Barry Whe or Isaac Hay-samplg, low-ridg G-Funk as anythg.
