In celebratn of <a href=" target="_blank">Pri Month</a>, we spoke wh three experts visual culture to take a look back at the origs and evolutn of the queer muny’s unmistakable signifier, and what means to raise the flag today, tomorrow, and for all eterny.</p><h2><strong>1970s: Do It Yourself</strong></h2><p>In Andy Campbell’s sential book <a data-offer-url=" class="external-lk" data-event-click="{"element":"ExternalLk","outgogURL":"" href=" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank"><em>Queer x Dign</em></a><em>,</em> the historian wr that the Vietnam vet and marijuana activist Gilbert Baker “was asked by San Francis cy supervisor Harvey Milk to sign a new flag for the upg Gay Freedom Day celebratns,” 1978. While gay activists had reclaimed the pk triangle ed by Nazis to target homosexuals, Baker and his patrts wanted a new, optimistic in. His flag would feature eight strip, arranged spectral orr wh each lor assigned a meang: hot pk for sex, red for life, orange for healg, yellow for sunlight, green for nature, turquoise for magic and art, digo for sereny, and vlet for spir. A send versn featured an area filled wh tie-dyed stars, a queer take on the Amerin flag. In perhaps the first of the flag’s many transmutatns, leather enthiast and publisher Tony DeBlase <a data-offer-url=" class="external-lk" data-event-click="{"element":"ExternalLk","outgogURL":"" href=" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">unveiled the Leather Pri flag 1989</a>, a seri of black and blue strip, wh a whe stripe the center and a nton wh a red heart.</p><h2><strong>1990s: On the Streets Where You Live</strong></h2><p>Not unlike the gay rights movement, by the 1990s, the rabow flag was big bs. In any urban center, you uld fd a gay bookstore sellg the flag on ps, mugs, T-shirts, or even dildos. On porch gay enclav om Palm Sprgs to Provcetown, actual flags filled the air. Acrdg to <a href=" target="_blank"><em>The New York Tim</em></a>, 1991, the artist David Spada transformed the flag to six anodized alumum rgs, which, when gathered on a ball bearg necklace quickly beme a rigur accsory. In 1994, Baker created a e-long flag that was rried past the Uned Natns and down New York Cy’s 5th Avenue to memorate the 25th anniversary of the <a href=" target="_blank">Stonewall</a> uprisg. Meanwhile, more muni were adoptg other kds of flags. In 1998, activist Michael Page offered a tristriped Bisexual Pri flag, which was 40% Pantone 226 (pk, for homosexualy), 40% Pantone 286 (blue, for heterosexualy), and 20% Pantone 258 (purple, for the blend).</p><h2><strong>2000s:</strong> <strong>Millennial Mutatns</strong></h2><p>In Phoenix, Arizona, the turn of the century brought the unfurlg of Moni Helms’s Trans Pri flag—five alternatg strip of baby boy blue, baby girl pk, and whe—at the lol Pri para. This would go on to bee one of the world’s most popular siblgs to Baker’s origal, which culmated, some 20 years later, s nsistent e as a lor palette and sign spiratn for outfs by the queens on <em>RuPl’s Drag Race</em> and pop stars like <a href=" target="_blank">Charli XCX</a> and Kim Petras. In 2003, to mark the rabow flag’s 25th anniversary, Baker fashned the Rabow 25 Sea-to-Sea flag, a full 1.25 of all eight origal lors, for display Key Wt, Florida, and eventual distributn to some 100 ci around the world.</p><h2><strong>2010s: Life Imat Art</strong></h2><p>In 2015, the Mm of Morn Art (MoMA) acquired a mass-market productn of the six-stripe flag for s permanent llectn. “We acquired on June 4, 2015, a mere few weeks before <em>Obergefell v. (Those lors had also long been proposed to other new Pri flags to memorate those lost to and livg wh AIDS.) The followg year, artist Daniel Quasar envisned a Progrs Pri flag—tersectg the standard six strip is a chevron of strip rporatg the black and brown strip and the lors of the Transgenr Pri flag. As Shaffer emphasiz, “every day, queer people are creatg new symbols that pot to a world yet to e. And as each symbol gets mastreamed and rporated to rporate logos and brandg mpaigns, we will ntue to ph further, to dream of new utopias, and to drag that new world to existence.”</p><div
