This club might be hard to fd, but sure don’t lack attu — and good tim!</em><br /> <span id="more-8150"></span></p><p>Ntled beneath some steps leadg down om Wyndham Street, Central’s well-known nightlife belt is <a target="_blank" href=">Pettiat Lane</a> – one of the few LGBT-iendly bars loted Hong Kong. Found by Christian Rhomberg, a pneer of the Lan Kwai Fong scene and founr of the uber-exclive private member’s club, Kee Club, Pettiat Lane is home to some of the cy’s bt drag nights and teems not jt wh LGBT partygoers, but also wh open-md club hoppers that more-often-than-not spill out onto the pact passageway. In ls than a year sce s openg, Pettiat Lane has grown to bee a popular mastay on the lol nightlife scene. It’s bee the go-to spot for a much-need after-work drk and has a loyal legn of fans amongst the late-night crowd. Though small, the place surely do not disappot, pecially when to the entertament. Early revellers n expect mic featurg the classic feel-good anthems that top the charts not jt today, but over the s, an imprsive selectn of your favoure drks, and some spectacular service. But if that all sounds a b generic, then simply wa until the clock strik 12. From the shirtls eye ndy to the gag-worthy lip-syncs om some of Hong Kong’s bt-loved drag queens, there’s plenty of fun for everyone. It’s really nothg like you’ve ever experienced Hong Kong, and the person rponsible for all this madns is Jt Van Herwern.</p><p>“From a young age, I’d always been fascated by all the work that go on behd the scen at rtrants and bars,” reunts the Dutch native. “As a ctomer, you only see the fal product, like the betiful plate or the perfectly crafted cktail stg right ont of you. But I wanted to be a part of the procs that got that betiful plate to you.” And so began his reer hospaly. There’s this feelg of muny that’s que unique to Pettiat Lane, and clearly riv om Jt and his team’s ncerted efforts embracg patrons of all sexual preferenc. “We like to scribe ourselv as the first straight-iendly gay bar. We want Pettiat Lane to be a haven for the LGBT muny, but at the same time, we also wele straight people to our fay. So long as you’re fun-lovg and ready to mgle, then you’re a part of ,” says Jt.</p><p>In March, Jt helped to spearhead the cy’s very first and wildly succsful Drag Month ( was so succsful, fact, that Pettiat Lane now hosts drag queen performanc at midnight on every night they’re open). The month-long event featured daily drag performanc om some of Hong Kong’s fierct queens such as Miss Mid Levels and Gigi Giubilee. On top of beg immensely fun, the event also aimed to empower the home-grown drag queen muny, by givg them a platform and a voice that, before this, didn’t really exist the cy. “Given the existg misnceptns of drag Hong Kong society, ’s fely not easy for to put up gigs like this, but we endorse bee we see drag as a symbol of the nonnformist. They are refg current genr norms. As such, the club partners wh a variety of LGBT anisatns, such as Queer Straight Alliance and Pk Dot, an effort to build and nurture a close-kn muny that tly celebrat diversy. Dpe clear signs of progrs wh regard to morn society, Jt regnis that there is still a discernible barrier that exists between mastream society and the LGBT muny. “Thanks to pop culture, pecially mic, movi and TV shows like RuPl’s Drag Race, gay culture is slowly beg much more socially accepted. But for many years, gay bars Hong Kong were jt not a safe place to be,” Jt remarks. Even today, there is still a long way to go wh regards to endg the stigmatisatn of LGBT groups the cy.” For this reason, Jt hop that Pettiat Lane n play an stmental role bridgg the divi between the LGBT and the non-LGBT muny.</p><p>So whether you’re gay or straight, black or whe, or simply lookg for a good time, why not take a chance on what is fast beg a staple on the Hong Kong nightlife scene.
