In Augt 1919, Roy Maistre (then known as Roi Mtre) and his lleague Roland Wakel held Atralia’s first mornist exhibn at Gayfield Shaw’s Art Salon Sydney. It was a show full of vibrant lour matched to a mil sle of the artists’ visg. Of the fourteen works shown, eleven were Cubist-rmed scen of the harbour’s forhor and boatsheds, but the remar were non-objective abstractns, a genre never seen before this untry.

Gerrard Gayfield Shaw was born the Alai suburb of Parksi on 27 Augt 1885. Before emigratg, Jam Shaw’s fay lived at 28 Gayfield Square Edburgh, an addrs that helps expla the choice of 'Gayfield’ as the artist’s send and preferred forename.
Perhaps reflectg the long tablished stat of prtmakg as a profsn his fay, Gayfield Shaw was enuraged to study art by his father and attend the South Atralian School of Dign. Norman Ldsay plaed about Shaw’s bs practis a May 1923 letter to his olr brother Lnel: '[Gayfield Shaw] is a fool, on his own acunt, for I send a lot of work elsewhere that would go to him, but for the fact that he never lets know when a work is sold, and lays payment till one is forced to drag out of him by threats which mak impossible to allow him to rry too much money, for if he cracked up sudnly, as he well might, the loss is evable. The Gayfield Shaw gallery had closed s doors by late 1924 and much of his stock was sold at a high profile sale at Jam R.
