Reviewed the Uned Stat on November 19, 2022I did enjoy readg this and first took the siari to Cormac McCarthy as a honorg of one of Gay’s spiratns (style was very siar to Sutree.

Gay's wrg is the polar oppose to McCarthy's sparse, mimalist prose.

Instead, Gay pats a rich table full of pungent, melod scriptns. William Gay lived my small unty TN and I never knew. Usg this technique Gay is a ltle hard to follow at first, but once you get half-way through the book you know each character as if they were your own fay or neighbor.

Impatiently wag for new on by him, I chanced on the reviews and through them disvered William Gay (as a siar style. Like most of Gay’s novels, "Fugiv of the Heart" tak place mid-20th century, ral Tennsee. The dark mood, the them, the lyricism is classic William Gay storytellg.

I loved the first half the way I've loved Gay's prev books (he's my favore thor). Reviewed the Uned Stat on January 1, 2023I had not read anythg by William Gay, so this novel was a gratifyg disvery. The parisons wh William Flkner are valid, not only bee Gay is brgg to life a patch of southern land and people, but bee he wr wh a prose style that is both mcular and lyril, and he is full of sights to universal human psychology, s longg and tratns, and he has a keen eye for the explible turngs of human fate.

William Gay was also spired by Huck and this novel is his tribute, but no pale imatn.

While Twa's novel pivoted around Huck wrtlg wh his nscience, Gay's boy character, Yat, has ls of a nscience and n be downright wicked, but he do share Huck's nocence at not prehendg the workgs of the adult world, cludg s racism. William Gay's nvoluted and often poetic prose is great fun to follow. Though there are elements that feel rivative of The Long Home, like the young man pg for the world-weary girl who is trapped a hoe of ill-repute, Gay's tramark poetry and humor are full display.

But, Gay's homage to Huckleberry Fn is a worthy addn to his non.
