Advice lumnist Dan Savage found 2010 to help young LGBT people see that they n fd happs and acceptance a world that isn't always tolerant of teens wh differenc.</p><p class="">Thoands of personal vios are posted on the It Gets Better webse, wh the goal of fosterg unrstandg. Now a group of high school stunts Lynn has teamed up wh a lol mician to subm their effort. It highlights issu related to anti-gay bullyg that n lead to teen suici.</p><p class="nt-medium">"High school is really hard," said Christopher Ga, a profsnal filmmaker who ns a program at <a href=">Raw Art Works</a>, an afterschool arts therapy program based Lynn. The teens he works wh nceived, directed and acted <a href=">an tense vio</a> for the song "Make Out" by <a href=">Jen Grygiel</a>. "And so I thk that the kids felt like there was an opportuny to send a msage to other kids," Ga explaed.</p><p class="">It took the full school year to plete, he said, and half of the kids who ntributed to the vio intify themselv as gay. But ultimately they hope the vio will speak to everybody.</p><p class="nt-medium">"They didn’t set out to tell 'gay stori,' but stori about feelg isolated when you’re surround by people, feelg that you have lovg parents that you n’t turn to and talk to, even if they are good parents," Ga said. In the vio, she tak the stage a high school dorium, but the actn quickly cuts to a whe-tiled bathroom. A red-haired stunt is crouchg down, verg his head for protectn, while three bulli kick and punch him. It's btal.</p><p class="">Grygiel's electric guar provis the backdrop, along wh her chos that says, "It'll be OK..."</p><p class="">Twenty-year-old Andrys Omar-Galan, a stunt at Lynn English High School, plays one of the bulli, but he admted his wardrobe was an issue.</p><p class="nt-medium">"My whole closet don’t say straight at all," Omar-Galan said.</p><p class="">Omar-Galan is openly gay and speaks wh a gentle se. At first, he was reluctant to play a bully who beats up another kid bee he’s gay. That’s one of the three realy-based stori that are woven together the vio.</p><p class="">In another thread, 18-year-old Ashaad Suarez sentially reenacted g out to his father when he was a hman.</p><p class="nt-medium">"There were a few tears. It was really hard. Bee before I me out to my father I was the sweett person you uld ever meet, but behd closed doors I was the most miserable," Suarez relled. "I had no iends, I had nobody to talk to, I didn’t tell a soul that I was gay bee I was terrified out of my md. I didn’t know who or how they would rpond to ."</p><p class="">His father rpond angrily and rejected him. For Suarez, workg on the "Make Out" vio was kd of like therapy.</p><p class="nt-medium">"I really don’t like talkg about stuff that happened back then," Suarez said. "So when I see there I’m like, 'Wow! How did this stggle that I went through get turned to art?' " Then, he add, "I loved . I love the film."</p><p class="">Seventeen-year-old Liam Madigan-Freid helped nceive, direct and also acted the vio. He’s straight, and believ the experience fely changed the way he se thgs.</p><p class="nt-medium">"I’m om Swampstt. I don’t thk there’s more than one or two out kids our entire school," Madigan-Freid said. "But fely did make my perspective on the gay and lbian muny broar. That a teenager might thk his life is total hell, you know, but how do you thk a gay and lbian teen who has to stay the closet jt to not get beaten up every day feels? I mean, I had to act as a gay kid and I was totally fe wh that," Kennedy said while stg among his filmmakg peers at Raw Art Works.</p><p class="">Suarez chimed : "I was surprised at that e a lot of people would’ve turned that role down. Cse I was askg people and they were like, ‘Uh uh, I a’t playg someone who's gay.' "</p><p class="">Rpondg to his iend, Kennedy said, "I found no difference wh . You’re jt another person playg a sad kid."</p><p class="">The are exactly the kds of nversatns mician Grygiel hoped this vio would spark. The vio ia grew out of her own participatn Savage's It Gets Better project. One of her missns right now is to support gay youth wh the goal of preventg any more teen suicis. It's also one of the reasons why she let the group of teenagers at Raw Art Works have their way wh her song.</p><p class="nt-medium">"It shows kids, ’s a visualizatn of what life n actually look like, and giv them hope," Grygiel said. "And I’ve never seen anythg like that, so I was jt blown away when I saw that — and I was touched."</p><p class="">Grygiel has shown the vio to a lot of people, and told me most have been moved to the pot of tears. It is powerful and emotnal, wh imprsively high productn valu. Now the mician wants as many gay and straight teens as possible to see the “Make Out” vio <a href=">onle</a>, and adms she wish she had seen somethg like when she was stgglg to fd her way as a LGBT kid high school. Her fgers are crossed that It Gets Better accepts the vio among all the others s steady stream of submissns.
