The meetg, anized by Eric Garber, Jim Gordon, Terry Henrlg, Ellen Klag, Greg Penngton and Willie Walker, built on smaller gathergs that had started the prev fall, and clud members of the San Francis Lbian and Gay History Project, which had begun the late 1970s, and the San Francis Gay and Lbian Perdil Archiv, which had begun 1983. On May 18, the membership vot to name the anizatn the San Francis Bay Area Gay and Lbian Historil Society and elects the first board of directors, cludg -chairs Ilene Brettholz and Willie Walker (1949–2004). Members of the newly formed society march the 1985 Internatnal Lbian & Gay Freedom Day Para San Francis.

1990The society chang s name to the Gay and Lbian Historil Society of Northern California to reflect a wir geographil spe for s llectns, and mov to the Redstone Buildg on 16th Street, s first rented office space. The society accsns a major llectn om Louis Sullivan (1951–1991), a pneerg gay and transgenr activist and historian, a foundg member of the GLBT Historil Society, and the founr of the group now known as FTM Internatnal. The photos the llectn offer a rare glimpse to gay life 1970s San Francis, and a signifint number have sce been digized.
