Augt, as we stopped at a red light while retracg his route. Rohr hat wastg time, and he had been stg at the light fumg when a dive msage arrived. “I heard as close as I know to the voice of God,” he said. The voice suggted that he fd happs where he was, rather than searchg for elsewhere. “For two and a half mut, I’m not ntrol at this stoplight,” he said. Beg ma to s still required a surrenr to a force greater than his ego; was an opportuny to practice ntemplatn, a form of medative prayer that has equivalents almost every relign. In Christiany, the practice dat back to the first several centuri after Christ, though was revalized the twentieth century by the Trappist monk Thomas Merton. Rohr told me, “Merton pulled back the veil.”</p><p class="paywall">Rohr is slight, wh a whe beard and the starry ey of a person who spends long perds silence. Over the past four s, he has gaed a voted followg for his provotive visn of Christiany. He ns the Center for Actn and Contemplatn, a medatn hub and relig school that s rints refer to as Ltle Vatin Cy. After that, he heads to the center and leads a morng ssn that clus a twenty-mute ntemplatn, a daily gospel readg, and the rgg of a Buddhist sgg bowl. Instead, his most recent book, “<a data-offer-url=" class="external-lk" data-event-click="{"element":"ExternalLk","outgogURL":"" href=" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">The Universal Christ</a>,” which me out last year, Rohr argu that the spir of Christ is not the same as the person of J. Christ—sentially, God’s love for the world—has existed sce the begng of time, suff everythg creatn, and has been prent all cultur and civilizatns. J is an rnatn of that spir, and followg him is our “bt shortcut” to accsg . But this spir n also be found through the practic of other religns, like Buddhist medatn, or through mung wh nature. Rohr has arrived at this ncln through what he se as an orthodox Francisn readg of scripture. “This is not hery, universalism, or a cheap versn of Unarianism,” he wr. “This is the Cosmic Christ, who always was, who beme rnate time, and who is still beg revealed.”</p><p class="paywall">“All my big thoughts have alced to this,” he told me. “It’s my end-of-life book.” His msage has been overwhelmgly well-received. A podst versn of Rohr’s book has been download more than a ln tim. He has also attracted some high-profile followers. Rohr named his Jack Rsell terrier Opie, as a nod to <a href=">Oprah Wey</a>, whom he nsirs a personal iend; he has appeared twice on her “SuperSoul Sunday” program and has been to dner at her home Monteco. “We really nnect,” he told me. “She knows I’m not seekg fame or money.” He is also revered by Melda Gat and is close to Bono. “He’ll jt drop me a ltle love note,” Rohr said. “He’s a very lovg person.” Both Gat and Bono have attend private retreats wh Rohr. The iar, who has taken a vow of poverty and liv as a morn-day herm, seems tickled by his ocsnal bsh wh fame.</p><p class="paywall">Many of Rohr’s followers are lennials, and he believ that his populary signifi a ep spirual hunger on the part of young people who no longer claim affiliatn wh tradnal relign. The people, whom soclogists ll the “non,” have grown number, om sixteen per cent to twenty-three per cent of Amerin adults, between 2007 and 2014. “People aren’t simply skeptil anymore, or even openly hostile to the church,” he told me. “They jt don’t see a relevance.” Rohr don’t believe that most non are secular, as many assume; he thks that they are qutng tradnal labels but hopg to fd a spirual msage that speaks to them. His reach is based, part, on his willgns to be fearls his crique of nservative Christiany, which he often talks about as a “toxic relign.” He attempts to strike a difficult balance: llg out the flaws ntemporary Christiany while affirmg s re tes. “People nfe Richard as a nstctnist when they hear him talk about toxic relign,” Michael Poffenberger, the executive director of the Center for Actn and Contemplatn, told me, “It’s not an attack on relign; ’s an troductn to the sacredns of everythg.”</p><p class="has-dropp has-dropp__lead-standard-headg paywall">Rohr liv Ltle Vatin Cy, a one-room ttage behd a garn of succulents. He was born Topeka, Kansas, 1943. He om a long le of wheat farmers who were h first by the Dt Bowl and then by the Great Deprsn. “Daddy had to leave the farm and work on the railroad, patg rs,” Rohr told me. The Rohrs were vout, and Richard attend Catholic school for a dollar a month. “I don’t have any nun horror stori,” he told me. “My experience of the nuns was of happy people. I thk that’s one reason I beme relig.” He didn’t wns any stanc of sexual abe his church muny. “We didn’t know the word ‘pedophilia,’ ” he said. “But I gus mt have been happeng.” The only teachg he remembers receivg about sex was “don’t do .” “That wasn’t helpful at all,” he said.</p><div data-attr-viewport-monor="le-recirc" class="le-recirc-wrapper le-recirc-observer-target-1 viewport-monor-anchor"></div><p class="paywall">At fourteen, Rohr read “<a data-offer-url=" class="external-lk" data-event-click="{"element":"ExternalLk","outgogURL":"" href=" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">The Perfect Joy of St. Francis</a>,” a novel about the life of the sat, and cid to bee a iar. He me of age durg the progrsive era of the Send Vatin Council, when Catholics were challengg the narrow nceptns of church doctre and llg for a greater engagement wh the world. As a novice, he worked an Aa Pueblo muny, New Mexi, nductg surveys for the Church on relig belief the area. Though the muny was largely Christian, people also followed tradnal relig practic: mothers walked outsi wh their children jt before dawn to greet the sun, a medatn rual that dat back at least eight hundred years. “We thought we knew somethg about ntemplatn,” he told me. “But we were not the only on.”</p><div class="Contaer-bkChBi byNLHx"></div><p class="paywall">Rohr was ordaed 1970, clad hippie vtments. “In the seventi, J was ,” he said. As a young prit, he led retreats for teen-agers; at one, a group of high-school jocks began speakg tongu. People flocked to hear Rohr speak, and d ssett of his sermons travelled all over the untry. His taped retreats were adapted to his first books, which ma him a kd of Catholic celebry. “I beme a ltle migod,” he told me, efully. He started a radil Christian muny Ccnati, lled New Jesalem, but, by the mid-eighti, he began to feel that wasn’t sufficiently focsed on global social actn. He returned to New Mexi, where he started the Center for Actn and Contemplatn, 1987, and the Livg School, a two-year, low-rincy relig-studi program, 2014. In the center’s early days, the staff held weekly protts at a nuclear-weapons rearch facily and worked wh a women’s öperative Mexi.</p><p class="paywall">Rohr me to his thkg about the Universal Christ through early Francisn teachgs. In the thirteenth century, Francis rebelled agast a Catholic Church that had bee fixated on s own pomp and hierarchy; he renounced worldly goods, lived a ve, and found God nature, revealed to him figur such as Brother Sun, Sister Moon, Brother Fire, and Sister Water. “His was an entirely tuive world view,” Rohr said. Later, Francisn theologians gave heft to Francis’s holistic universe by tyg to scripture—for example, to a passage of Colossians that reads, “The Son is the image of the visible God, the firstborn over all creatn. For him all thgs were created: thgs heaven and on earth, visible and visible. . . . He is before all thgs, and him all thgs hold together.” This, they argued, was evince that God is prent the natural world.</p><p class="paywall">Rohr gave this prence a name. For him, the Cosmic Christ is the spir that is embedd —and mak up—everythg the universe, and J is the embodied versn of that spir that we n fall love wh and relate to. (Their simultaneo distctns and onens n be difficult for an outsir to grasp; Rohr scrib “The Universal Christ” as a sequel to “<a data-offer-url=" class="external-lk" data-event-click="{"element":"ExternalLk","outgogURL":"" href=" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">The Dive Dance</a>,” his book about the mysteri of the Try.) He many of the same vers as the early Francisns to support his claims. “Christ’s much larger, universe-spanng role was scribed que clearly —and always the first chapters of—John’s Gospel, Colossians, Ephians, Hebrews, and 1 John, and shortly thereafter the wrgs of the early Eastern fathers,” he wr. Many progrsive schools of Christiany teach that non-Christians n go to Heaven, but the ia of the Universal Christ allows Rohr to make a robt argument based on a versn of orthodoxy, rather than on a vague sense of egalarianism. His followers appreciate his scriptural rigor. “He’s not g and sayg, ‘I saw a daisy, now everybody love each other,’ ” Tim Shriver, a longtime stunt of Rohr’s and the chairman of the Special Olympics, told me. “He’s tryg to create a new ur-unrstandg of relign that isn’t bound by separatn, superry, and fightg.”</p><p class="paywall">Rohr’s ias have gotten him to trouble the past. William Pl Young—a self-scribed fundamentalist Christian and the thor of “<a data-offer-url=" class="external-lk" data-event-click="{"element":"ExternalLk","outgogURL":"" href=" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">The Shack</a><em>,</em>” a Christian novel that has sold over twenty ln pi—told me that, though he is Rohr’s iend, he worri that the iar’s teachgs will be misunrstood. Young people who are trated wh their church might misread Rohr’s work as advotg a vague spirualy that is entirely unnnected wh the scriptural Christ. “The danger of universalism is that nothg matters, pecially J,” he said. “Some of Rohr’s followers n read that way.” Acrdg to Rohr, durg the early seventi, a group of lol Catholics secretly rerd his sermons an effort to have him exmunited. They livered the tap to the late Cardal Joseph Bernard, then the Archbishop of Ccnati, who reviewed them and termed that they were wh the bounds of the Church’s teachgs. (The current office of the Archdce had no knowledge of the cint.) Gmblgs have persisted, but Rohr ntu to preach what he believ. “I’m too old for them to bother me anymore,” Rohr told me.</p><p class="has-dropp has-dropp__lead-standard-headg paywall">Three years ago, Rohr was diagnosed wh an aggrsive form of prostate ncer. A year and a half ago, while alone his home, he had a severe heart attack. He rang a iend, who orred him to ll 911 for an ambulance. Rohr refed; he didn’t want to die the prence of strangers, so his iend raced over to sh him to the hospal. As they pulled out of his driveway, Rohr said goodbye to the ltle hoe where he’d lived for twenty years, the tre, the dumpster. “I was ready to go,” he told me. “But, anyway, here I am.” Rohr is unrgog chemotherapy, and the ncer is now remissn, though he has renciled himself to his mortaly. “What did we ever lose by dyg?” he asked me. Rohr also has Grover’s disease, an toimmune ndn that mak his sk ch. “And ’s wrkly,” he said. He noted that the apostle Pl speaks of the tent of the body beg fold up, shrivellg and clg as prepar to part. “My belief is that the two universal paths are great love and great sufferg,” he told me. For much of his life, Rohr has ed sufferg as a spirual tool to help him learn to be humble. “I pray for one huiatn a day,” he told me. “It don’t have to be major.”</p><p class="paywall">Rohr has an easier time talkg about the end of his life than his stunts and followers do. In Albuquerque, his lleagu are quietly thkg about how his teachgs n live on after he di. Poffenberger, the executive director of the Center for Actn and Contemplatn, moved to New Mexi om Washgton, D.C., 2014, to help answer this qutn. “We mentally plan for two years,” he told me. Poffenberger me to Rohr’s work 2009, after workg as an activist and beg disillned by the polil system Washgton. He attend one of Rohr’s wilrns men’s retreats ( volved dm circl) and began to follow his teachgs. Poffenberger has been attemptg to apply the prcipl of movement elogy, the study of what mak social movements succeed, to Rohr’s wi-rangg ias. “It’s not jt about one’s own dividual spirual journey,” he said. “It’s how that’s tied to social transformatn.” He is hopg, for example, to harns Rohr’s large followg support of youth climate strik and the Reverend William Barber’s Poor People’s Campaign. Perhaps, Poffenberger thks, as adherence to tradnal religns dwdl, social actn will bee a more relevant form of spirual practice.</p><p class="paywall">On the morng before I left Albuquerque, I sat wh the two men Rohr’s office, which is crowd wh statu of dancg Shivas and other gifts om admirers and iends. They began talkg about Rohr’s penchant for ins, which hang on the walls of his hermage and office. He has forty pictns of Jonah beg nsumed by a whale, cludg several funky rendns, and he intifi wh the prophet. “I’ve been held safe and sp up on the right shore while preachg a msage that no one wanted to hear,” he said. He is also a votee of ancient Christian inography, and of inography om the Eastern Orthodox Church—both of which offer a glimpse to relig thkg that is not domated by ntemporary Wtern dogmas.</p><div data-attr-viewport-monor="le-recirc" class="le-recirc-wrapper le-recirc-observer-target-2 viewport-monor-anchor"></div><p class="paywall">One of his favore imag is Andrei Rublev’s fourteenth-century pictn of the Holy Try, which J, God, and the Holy Spir form a balanced triangle, none more important than the other. “Until we get the Try right, our metaphysics is off,” he told me. “We pulled J out of the Try, gave him a whe beard and whe sk.” Rohr has heard that, on the origal, which is hangg at the State Tretyakov Gallery, Mosw, there’s a ridue of glue.
