The forty-year-old standup edian and actor has spent the past two years fg a new path as a rapper and a producer. Last year, he released an eight-song EP unr the stage name Eshu Tune. (The name Eshu om a Yoban god known as a trickster.) His mic rang om the nse and trospective to the bluntly absurd, cludg a song lled “Veneers,” which he pays tribute to his porcela teeth.</p><p class="paywall">Burs was schled to perform his first full live set New York recently, at the downtown club S.O.B.’s. Unually, he raps wh a full band and sists on rigoro rehearsals and sound checks. The eveng of the show, he scrolled his iPad the greenroom, searchg for imag to display on the stage screen durg his act. “I love when the show has great visuals,” he said, pullg up a retro-lookg clip om a vio game lled Nja Baseball Bat Man.</p><p class="paywall">He has dabbled hip-hop sce llege, when he did battle rap, and mic has always been a topic his standup. Durg the panmic, part of which he spent Hawaii, he serly mted to the pursu. He’d qu drkg after a 2017 n- wh the police, and 2021 he was expectg his first child. “It was me realizg I wasn’t exced about tryg to do a lot of standup edy the way I ed to,” he said the greenroom. He wore a navy mh Chigo Bulls jersey and slim black rgo pants. Sobriety has given him a h-faced glow and a newly svelte physique.</p><p class="paywall">“I didn’t want to be out there,” he ntued, referrg to the edy scene. “It jt didn’t feel good.” Mic refocsed him. He hired a band, a mic publicist, and a vol and performance ach, who helped him turn his onstage adpan style to somethg more energetic. “One exercise she gave me was to image that the person the ont row is af,” he said. “That helped.”</p><p class="paywall">At the start, he was stubborn about his new directn, routely turng down six-figure standup gigs. “Fuck that! I’m dog mic!” he bellowed, imatg himself. “Pass! No, I’m not dog your standup sh. He turned to the dnk woman. “But I’m genuely baffled by why you won’t shut the fuck up! What are you talkg about?” The dience roared, and he returned to his b. “<em>That</em> would have land way better if you would have shut the fuck up!,” he said, after he fished.</p><p class="paywall">Fstrated but jovial, he told the crowd, “That’s actually why I don’t do that much standup. For real. There’s a level of whe entlement my dience, I promise you.”</p><p class="paywall">When he me out for his hip-hop set, he’d brightened up his outf wh a red sat bomber jacket and matchg sunglass. He performed a new sgle lled “I Lift Weights,” a wild and silly track that mak fun of fns nuts.
