Tam wrote, “wow this guy is <em class="small">REALLY</em> uy.” Ravi said, “I’m such a thug pared to him.” The school iends seemed slightly awed by Pine’s nfince and populary, as well as by the attractivens of his female iends. But they were also nfed: Pine didn’t look like an anx asthmatic who wrote self-laceratg T-shirt slogans.</p><p class="paywall">Tam remembered that Ravi had met a gay stunt named Carter durg orientatn at Rutgers, and had sce spoken of him admirgly. Maardi poured a whiskey. He is a bs lawyer, not a crimal lawyer, but he is Jane Clementi’s , and he has been helpg her fay sce Tyler’s ath. He has acpanied the Clementis to heargs, and issued ocsnal prs statements.</p><p class="paywall">When I mentned Ravi’s ment about “poor people,” Maardi was a ltle shocked. “He said that?” he asked. “The fay is not well off, but they’re certaly not poor.” The Clementis live Ridgewood, sixteen northwt of the Gee Washgton Bridge. The town, which is wealthy and whe, was recently ranked fifteenth on a list of the top-earng towns the untry, one place below Greenwich, Connecticut. Last year, Ridgewood High School, which Tyler attend, was placed twenty-seventh a Washgton <em>Post</em> evaluatn of New Jersey schools. (Ravi’s school was eighteenth.) Maardi scribed a quiet fay. “There’s no loudmouth, unlike some of my children,” he said. Tyler was the quiett of all. “I knew him, but I didn’t know him, if you know what I mean. Very shy.”</p><p class="paywall">Joseph Clementi recently told me that his son was physilly slight, and that if someone wanted to hurt him “he would have absolutely no ia of how to fend himself.” Five feet six, wh rigid posture, Tyler had short reddish hair, a proment nose, and an open, earnt exprsn. In his mid-teens, he had the tast and manners of a teen-ager om an earlier era. He ntributed to onle discsns about mils and opera, garng, and the re of Ain dwarf ogs. Maardi relled, “I have a photograph of the two of them, where he’s standg ont of her—she’s got her arms around him, graspg his hands.” Tyler seemed to have more female than male iends, but none of them, he thought, were “close, powerful iends.”</p><p class="paywall">An acquatance who memorialized Clementi onle wrote, “Tyler never said very much or teracted wh the rt of the youth group at the church I attend wh him.” This post is acpanied by a photograph of Clementi on a church outg 2007. He seems out of step even wh his own bright-orange T-shirt, which reads “Daytona Beach.”</p><p class="paywall">Soon after startg at Rutgers, Clementi had a late-night I.M. nversatn wh someone who ed the name Sam Cz. The iendship seems to have been fairly new. “I would love to have like 3 close iends,” Clementi wrote to Cz. He said that, bee he valued solu, people “view me as always wantg to be alone,” addg, “but thats not te . . . i need some people my life . . . jt not as much as most people do.” He went on, “I <em class="small">NEED</em> nversatn . . ’s jt that i n’t <em class="small">DO</em> .” Cz tried to give advice—how to start a nversatn, how to ask people about themselv. Clementi replied, “I’ve googled like a ln tim / I kno all the ‘l.’ ”</p><div data-attr-viewport-monor="le-recirc" class="le-recirc-wrapper le-recirc-observer-target-4 viewport-monor-anchor"></div><p class="paywall">Clementi was, fact, a very good vl player: he played both the Bergen Youth Orchtra and the Ridgewood Symphony, an adult orchtra. But he was uncerta if he had the talent or foc necsary for a reer mic. At fifteen, he worried onle about his mment to practicg, and add that, although he had sometim been enuraged by Juilliard alumni to apply there, he wonred if, “eeeeeeeep down,” he really wanted to go.</p><p class="paywall">By his senr year, Clementi had stopped nsirg a mic gree. Onle, he asked how to choose between Rutgers, Hartwick, and the Universy of Connecticut. “I don’t really have a major pned down at all, eher b, pharm, acuntg, or somethg,” he said. “Also toyg wh the ia of Communy llege, but the thought of gettg away is very temptg too. I feel very feated by HS and hated the whole thg.”</p><p class="paywall">Pl Maardi shared wh me a memory of Tyler at a fay gatherg at the Clementis’, about a year before his ath. “He uld play the vl while ridg a unicycle,” he said. “And I actually did wns that. only half filled. But at a third hearg, December, the same space was packed. Two dozen men sus, most of them South Asian, arrived and left a group; fay iends, after some private bate, had cid to show support.</p><p class="paywall">One member of that group, Anil Kappa, a iend of Ravi’s father, agreed to meet me at a fé Prceton. When he sat down, he said that his heart went out to the Clementi fay. He also talked, a soft and dismayed voice, about Ravi’s arrt and vilifitn: “I’m readg about him beg a jerk, beg a bully, beg a homophobe, but as a real person who I’ve seen growg up—I n’t relate to any of the statements.” He thought of Ravi’s actns as a “kid’s prank that went wrong,” a culture of celebry tweetg and “Amerin Pie” (a edy which a young man sets up a secret webm broadst). The judicial system had taken thgs too far, he said. Ravi’s fay had stggled to live a normal life sce the arrt, and Ravi—who is aga livg wh his parents—had barely been able to leave the hoe. “He’s been rcerated—he’s an exile,” Kappa said. “Our mds are ozen right now.”</p><p class="paywall">Like Dhan’s father, Kappa is a software engeer. They met the neteen-neti, when both still lived the southern Indian state of Ta Nadu, where they were born. Ravi Pazhani and his wife, Sabha, a homemaker wh a liberal-arts gree, were then their twenti, and their son Dhan was a toddler. (Followg Ta nventn, Dhan has his father’s first name as his surname.) In 1995, Kappa moved to Ameri; two years later, he helped persua Pazhani to do the same. The fay first settled Woodbridge, jt east of New Bnswick, and Pazhani muted to New York as a software nsultant. That work ntu, and Pazhani also owns, wh Kappa, an rmatn-technology pany New Jersey. Kappa scribed Pazhani as nservative, but uldn’t acunt for Dhan’s ia that his father would want to throw his gay roommate out the wdow. Inseparable!” She went on, “On the last day, all we did was hug. Well actually, I hugged him and he didn’t hug back.” The msage was wrten support of Ravi, but Chen add, “I thk he hacked my puter, although I have no evince.”</p><p class="paywall">Jason Tam has known Ravi sce seventh gra. Now studyg New York, Tam is one of few people om high school who have kept touch wh Ravi sce his arrt. Though Tam scribed their relatnship as iendly, a recent stant-msage terview his tone was harsh. As Tam put , “He’s so much of a jerk that may seem like he’s a homophobe but he’s not.”</p><p class="paywall">Molly Wei knew Ravi both om home and om Rutgers. I figured, Oh, he was jt a shy kid.” He add that Clementi “didn’t seem to have any iends.” Ravi do seem to have regnized Clementi’s good nature. Tam showed me msag that Ravi wrote on Augt 29th: “He’s mad nice and mad quiet,” and “I thk my roommate lik his privacy so I’ve been out of my room.” And though Clementi was sometim annoyed by Ravi’s ms— one chat, he mentned a yogurt ntaer left out for days—he also tected thoughtfulns and telligence beneath Ravi’s swagger. He dned for the universy’s send-ng orchtra but was offered a place the Rutgers Symphony, which is ma up largely of doctoral stunts mic. Clementi was not, though he sometim went to parti wh a group of four teetotallg girls. “I would die if I was forced to always have people around me,” he told Cz. “The first week here was so hard b/c of that and my roommie purposely left me alone.” Ravi, he noted, had been “very nsirate and perceptive.”</p><p class="paywall">In high school, Clementi had not been wily regard as gay. He had been postg msag at Jtboys sce he was fourteen, but they were rarely sexual; rather, he exchanged views about televisn and pact rs wh other affable ntributors, some of whom ed nam like Bigpimpboy14. In one post, Clementi wrote, “Call me a p but I hontly don’t thk people are mature enough to be havg sex prr to llegeish years today’s world. . . . Sex isn’t somethg a 16 y/o should really need to spend much time batg. Then aga, I’m practilly asexual, and nsired myself such until about 17 (when I started puberty), so I gus I have a lot of bias.” This post may well reflect the tth, but he wrote when he was sixteen.</p><p class="paywall">After Clementi’s ath, his parents learned that he had e out to a iend the sprg of 2010, and that the summer he had apparently met romantic or sexual partners onle. Three days before startg at Rutgers, he me out to his fay.</p><p class="paywall">When he scribed that experience to Cz, Clementi reported that his father was “very acceptg” of his news, but add, “Its a good thg dad is ok w/ or I would be ser trouble / mom has basilly pletely rejected me.” He later add that she had been “very dismissive.”</p><p class="paywall">Jane Clementi told me recently that Tyler announced his sexualy to her a private, late-night nversatn, which “snowballed” to ver his perceived shortage of iends and the uncertaty he had about his fah. At the end of their talk, she relled, “he cried, I cried, we hugged.” They said that they loved each other. But, Jane Clementi said, “I mt adm, other than beg surprised, I felt betrayed.” He had not nfid her, though he had known he was gay sce middle school. She told me that she and her hband had long assumed that Tyler’s brother Jam was gay, and had even discsed the matter wh Tyler, askg him, “Why won’t he jt talk about ?” (Jam is now out.)</p><p class="paywall">The day after Tyler’s disclosure, she said, “I gus part of me was grievg a ltle b. I expected Tyler to be married one day, and be a father.” She said, “I was sad, I was quiet,” and she wonrs if this is what he was reactg to when he wrote “rejected”; the word hurt her. She relled that she spent the rt of the week wh him, livered him to llege, and, throughout September, spoke to him on the phone. And she was expectg to vis Tyler for Parent and Fay Weekend: “We had tickets to the football game. This perhaps left him exposed: once he overme his shyns, he was not shy at all. His sexual self—born on the Inter, the shadow of pornography—seems to have been largely divorced om his social self. After Clementi died, Gawker found what appeared to be an acunt that he had opened at Cam4, a se where women and men put on sexual displays, by webm. Clementi also ed a hookup Web se lled Adam4adam. Clementi, who said that he had texted Ravi to requt e of the room, joked that “would be so awk” if Ravi walked “while I’m gettg fucked,” addg, “At the same time i thk I would jt be like ‘screw .’ ”</p><p class="has-dropp has-dropp__lead-standard-headg paywall">On September 19th, a Sunday, Clementi was expectg M.B. to vis aga. As before, he asked Ravi for the room wh a text msage. That eveng, Ravi played Ultimate Frisbee (a sport that, one onle discsn of the Clementi se, was predictably scribed as “gayer than havg sex wh a du”). He returned to Davidson Hall at about ne. Ravi told the police he thought that Clementi “was jt havg a iend over to hang out.” Ravi started llectg thgs for a shower, down the hall, and Clementi asked, “Do you need anythg else?” Acrdg to the statement ma to the police by Wei, who spoke to Ravi a moment later, Ravi only then realized that he was beg asked not to return; he relled sayg to Clementi, “Oh, you want me to leave?”</p><p class="paywall">At the start of the semter, Wei, overlookg Ravi’s past ns, had bee iendly wh him aga. Upon leavg Room 30, Ravi apparently first ma a quick vis to her room, across the hall. Wei said that he was agated, askg, “Why do he want the room all to himself?” He then returned to his room, and was gettg anized for his eveng’s exile when Clementi retrieved M.B. at the dormory entrance and brought him to the room. Ravi said of his brief enunter wh M.B., “He didn’t acknowledge me at all. He jt sat on the bed, on Tyler’s bed.”</p><p class="paywall">Ravi returned to Wei’s room. She relled him sayg, “It’s a really old-lookg guy, like, What the heck, what’s gog on?” Ravi thought that M.B. seemed “really shady.” She went on, “He actually was kd of angry. He’s, like, ‘If he steals my iPad I’m gog to make Tyler pay for .’ And he’s, like, ‘Oh, and my roommate’s gay, like what if somethg else is gog on?’ ” Speakg to the police, Ravi relled M.B. as “slightly overweight,” wh facial hair of some sort. Ravi’s reactn appears to have clud some class prejudice: the man, apparently workg-class, was a likely thief. He was “random,” as one of Molly Wei’s iends later put —he was troublgly not of their world.</p><p class="paywall">If Ravi was as disoriented as Wei claims, one n perhaps see why: Clementi was hant to talk about curtas, but a by dorm, after ls than a month of habatn, he had kicked out his roommate so that he uld have a sexual enunter wh an olr man who ma no pretense of beg his boyiend. Ravi also noted, perhaps, the ntrast between his nstant flutter of self-promotn and Clementi’s quiet, unswervg path to gratifitn. Jason Tam told me that he’d never known Ravi to have a girliend.</p><p class="paywall">Acrdg to Tam, Ravi had already explored unorthodox of webms. For a high-school physics project, Ravi had tried to lk a webm to a hobbyist il gun. In the summer before llege, he wrote a puter program that prompted webms to snap photographs, at tervals, and upload them to a Web se. He disguised the program as somethg else, and tried to get iends to stall . Some did, Tam said, but they weren’t tricked: they “noticed their webm light turn on, so was obv.” (Clementi, then, was apparently not the first subject of a webm experiment.) But Ravi had tweaked his iChat settgs so that the program uld tomatilly accept g lls. Acrdg to Ravi, he had ma this his puter’s ual settg. Whatever the se, that eveng the program was set to to-accept; he also turned off his monor, or darkened to black. At 9:13 <em class="small">P.M.</em>, he was bi Wei at her puter. He opened iChat, and clicked his name on her chat list. A few feet away, his puter accepted his requt, and Ravi and Wei saw a live vio image of Room 30.</p><p class="paywall">Acrdg to Wei, she and Ravi “saw Tyler and his iend, or whoever that was—their upper body.” She remembered that the two men were fully drsed, standg agast the door. (Ravi later said that they had their shirts off.) “I uldn’t see any fac, and they were jt what seemed to be kissg, and then, after lerally two sends, we jt turned off. It’s possible that he still thought of his Twter dience as a group no larger than those followers. In tth, his dience uld have clud anyone who searched on Twter for “Dhan.” Perhaps Ravi expected Clementi to read his tweet; or perhaps he didn’t bother to nsir that he might. This issue may bee important to a jury, given the seemg nflict between a charge of vasn of privacy and a charge of bias timidatn, both charg that Ravi fac. Spyg is secret, and timidatn is not.</p><div data-attr-viewport-monor="le-recirc" class="le-recirc-wrapper le-recirc-observer-target-8 viewport-monor-anchor"></div><p class="paywall">Soon after Ravi’s tweet, Molly Wei began an I.M. nversatn wh At Chung, her boyiend, then a llege stunt Hoboken. Wei began, “<em class="small">OMG AUSTIN</em>” and then: “<em class="small">OH MY FKING GOD</em>.” She hand the keyboard over to Ravi, who told the story—gut, webm, embrace—then let Wei rume typg. Chung asked “<em class="small">DID YOU TAKE A PIC</em>,” and she replied that they should have, but add, “Nah that would be <em class="small">TERRIBLE</em>.” Chung said that the news ma him want to “throw up,” even though Clementi was “mad nice.” Wei replied, “He’s <em class="small">NICE</em> but he’s kissg a guy right now / like <em class="small">THEY WERE GROPING EACH OTHER EWWW</em>.”</p><p class="paywall">It seems possible that Wei’s upper-se horror sprang not jt om thoughts of homosexualy but om the night’s many surpris: that Clementi, though nerdy, had sex; that he had turned Ravi out of his room; that his partner was not a stunt. Prosecutors, makg the se for bias, and referrg to Ravi’s tweet, have asked, “If the word ‘chick’ were substuted for ‘du’ that same exact tweet, would have generated the same tert?” But one n image We saw Tyler aga.” Clementi and M.B. had moved, “and their tops were off and as soon as we saw that we turned off.” Wei said that they were wearg pants.</p><p class="paywall">Ravi’s puter monor had remaed dark all eveng. But at one pot Clementi noticed s webm sudnly glowg green. When he moved toward Ravi’s sk, tendg to turn the mera away, the light went out. (This mt have been one of the viewgs om across the hall—that night, Ravi’s puter ma iChat nnectns only wh Wei’s puter.) M.B. left around ten. (As he apparently had Sam Cz, who had remd him, not long before, a nversatn about lonels: “u got my cell # and u uld ll me or txt if u need someone.”) That night, Yang gently urged him to discs the webm spyg wh Ravi, even while she tried to protect him om alarm. “I gus,” Clementi said. “But s not like he left the m on or rerd or anythg / he jt like took a five sec peep lol.”</p><p class="paywall">A recent paper by two scholars of new media—Alice Marwick, of Harvard, and Danah Boyd, of N.Y.U.—scrib the tenncy of teen-age girls to tegorize even que aggrsive behavr as mere “drama,” the same tegory as onle gossip and jok. Someone intified as Jennifer replied, “Report him. What he is dog is pletely appropriate.” She add, “I’m not tryg to be mean but if you don’t have the guts to take ntrol of the suatn is not gog to get better.”</p><p class="paywall">Clementi weighed his dilemma. It was nearly dawn when he wrote, “I’m jt not a great self advote and am aaid that if I go to the wrong party, I won’t get the help I need.” He went on, “I’m jt worried about thgs beg a huge ms after this cuz i mean, someone reports you and then you might have to spend the rt of the semter livg wh them anyway bee of stupid admistratn and then there’s the chance I uld get a new roommate that’s even worse. ”</p><p class="has-dropp has-dropp__lead-standard-headg paywall">On Tuday, September 21st, Clementi ved M.B. back to his dorm room. In the late afternoon, he texted Ravi: “Could I have the room aga like 9:30 till midnight?” Ravi replied, “Yeah no problem,” and then sent a text to Molly Wei: “He wants the room aga.” She replied, “?!? <em class="small">WTF</em>.”</p><p class="paywall">Ravi now went to full imprar mo, a way that may prent the greatt challenge to his attorney. “Invasn of privacy” is a Peepg Tom statute. Jt before M.B. was due to arrive, Clementi went to see Raahi Grover, a rint adviser. Grover took him serly, and asked him to repeat his story an e-mail. He also offered him a spare bed his own room for that night. Clementi cled, and returned to his room.</p><p class="paywall">He unplugged Ravi’s puter. In a text sent at 9:41 <em class="small">P.M.</em>, he told Yang, “I was aaid he might have hidn another webm so I also shut down and turned off the power strip.” Prosecutors, pursug a bias charge, have claimed that “aaid,” this ntext, nstut evince of fear.</p><p class="paywall">Ravi ntends that, by this time, he had changed his md about the broadst, and had disabled his webm. Yet he was still referrg to a “viewg party” after leavg the dorm for Frisbee, and, when he texted Huang the next day, he said, “ got msed up and didn’t work <em class="small">LOL</em>.”</p><p class="paywall">M.B. arrived at 10:19 <em class="small">P.M.</em> Clementi did not tell him about what had happened on Sunday. Ravi me back to the dorm, and waed Agarwal’s room. Jt after eleven, he texted Clementi to ask if he was still g the room. At eleven-forty-eight, Clementi replied, “we’re done.”</p><p class="paywall">About fifteen mut later, Clementi sent a formal e-mail to Grover. Clementi went to the mp food urt, bought a burger, and, at about six-thirty, took the universy shuttle b to the rail statn, where he took a tra to New York, then a subway uptown. Police officers drove to Davidson C, but there was no reply when they knocked at Room 30. Wei, noticg the motn, phoned Ravi eight or ne tim. When he fally picked up, he told her that he was his room and she’d awakened him, addg, “I’m really tired, I want to go back to sleep.” But he did then talk to the police. Stupid drafts.” Ravi claimed that he had accintally published a stored draft. If so, ’s not clear why he didn’t lete . It seems more likely that he was beg evasive. He knew that a ls crimatg versn of his tweet would have a Wednday time stamp. The “draft” tweet would help to expla Wednday’s livery of a Tuday tweet. The letn of the two earlier tweets, along wh text-msage nversatns that Ravi had wh Huang and Wei, form part of the dictment agast him.</p><p class="paywall">By ten-thirty that night, the Clementis had been told that, apparently, Tyler had jumped om the Gee Washgton Bridge.
