But beneath the showmanship was Combs the novator. He unrstood hip-hop as a liftyle at a time before “fluencer” had entered our cultural lexin. His image looked larger than life 1999, when nsumers watched mic vios on televisn and bought cloth at shoppg malls. We were still sendg SMS msag on our cellular phon and two-way pagers as Combs was makg hip-hop art that predated visually driven social media culture. He was a GIF mache before we knew what a GIF was or how, 15 years the future, makg viral ntent uld turn anyone to a celebry. Most of the celebri om the Puff Daddy era are locked a social media limal space. Try to fd, as I did recently, an Insta-qualy image of your fg pop culture memori before 2010. There may be some YouTube vio or a few gray GIFs. Bad Boy-affiliated artists are an exceptn. There are clips of Junr M.A.F.I.A. and Lil’ Kim and Biggie and Puff himself all over social media. They look as morn as celebri who were beg born the year that the East Coast-Wt Coast wars were at their peak. There is a massive picture of 22-year-old Puffy and 19-year-old Notor B.I.G. standg pre-gentrified Harlem. He pots to himself and says, “Look at him. He was hungry. You n’t beat a man who still has that hunger but now I got all the rourc. And so Biggie had lled me Diddy bee of my bop, the way I walk, my swagger, and they got somethg lled the diddy bop, that jt, jt happens to, ’s not me, was somethg before me. That’s the diddy bop. He also is humble and empathetic. And I don’t have nothg to say about her relatnship or her life.” Over the several hours we spend together at Combs’s home and later on Zoom, is clear that if any woman was gog to tie the renowned playboy down, would have been Porter. “And so, you know, I had to start to al wh when I lost Kim. ’Cse I was like, man, you had . I’m not sayg I would do any of differently. God willg—I would have had more time,” he says, then adds, “I look at my life as I got a send chance. I am amazed when he brgs up #MeToo before mentng Black Liv Matter. “If you livg on this earth and you tryg to keep on alg wh this sh, that a’t the way we gog to live. And people out there that are tired of . And ’s not jt a Black and whe thg. You know what I’m sayg? It’s jt tired of the way that don’t have to be. Like when they said was over—when they said the #MeToo, when was over, was over,” he says emphatilly.</p><p class="paywall">Combs se #MeToo as a qualified sign of progrs and evince that celebri n change the world. “The #MeToo movement, the tth, is that spired me. It showed me that you n get maximum change,” he says. What Combs wants now is for that maximum change to e for his tribe. Enter the Love era.</p><p class="has-dropp paywall"><strong>I rolled my ey</strong> when I first heard about Combs’s new name, Love. He announced a social media statement May and followed up wh a picture of the driver’s license that lists Love as his legal middle name. It is easy to be glib about the rebrandg. On a lser man sounds like an anthropomorphized “Live Lgh Love” sign om a disunt r store. But this is Sean Combs we are talkg about. He do not ask his people to brg snacks. He asks them to set up a “sexy suatn.” His stct for elevatg the mundane to an experience is part of his charm and his succs. What do he have planned for the Love era? Oh, jt a ltle jtice and a lot of Black palism. For Love, those are one and the same.</p><p class="paywall">“Love is a missn,” he tells me wh all serns. Combs is on a missn to lead a five-year takeover of…somethg. Perhaps of everythg? The tails are, shall we say, a ltle murky, but the passn is there. “I feel like that’s one of the biggt missns that will actually shift thgs. But bis that, we—the world—is different. We have the ter, we have the power, we have a culture, I have on a five-year plan.” That plan is for Black people, although Combs is reful to say that he lov everyone. He says many tim durg our talk that Love is about movg om “me to we,” and he has a very clear ia of who is clud that we.</p><asi aria-hidn="te" class="PullQuoteEmbedWrapper-sc-EoVjf fQbAzo"><div class="PullQuoteDerativeBorr-sc-iUyOLj UnBFT"></div><div class="PullQuoteEmbedContent-sc-kTcfhx fThoFL"><p class="paywall">“[I] was <strong>SENT HERE</strong> not to jt do those thgs that are kd of rooted personal succs but to be able <strong>TO TRANSFER</strong> to we, and do thgs that are <strong>REAL CHANGE</strong> and <strong>COMMUNAL SUCCESS.</strong>”</p></div></asi><p class="paywall">“My people takg time to feel like ’s all right to love. Take time to huddle up your tribe, take time to munite and know your power. Take time to heal. You know what I’m sayg, [takg re of] yourself whout feelg like, oh, you’re gog to be labeled a racist now bee you talk about takg re of yourself.” He is on a roll. This isn’t the Black preacher elegy. It has more fury and a faster nce. It is like a tt hip-hop verse. Combs wants to mol what lovg onelf n do for llective Black actn. In the wake of #MeToo and Black Liv Matter, Combs went lookg for guidance. He jumps up durg his recatn on Black love to retrieve a small journal. It looks out of place the home’s curated opulence. The tan, embossed ver has a ty lock, like a teenager’s first diary. The unled pag have quot wrten on them large block letters. Combs flips to the first page. It is a Jam Baldw quote: “Love do not beg and end the way we seem to thk do. Love is a battle, love is a war; love is a growg up.”</p><div data-attr-viewport-monor="le-recirc" class="le-recirc-wrapper le-recirc-observer-target-2 viewport-monor-anchor"></div><p class="paywall">Growg up for Combs has meant g back to God. Diddy had “gotten so far om God,” Combs tells me. He had hunger and visn but was “so small.” Now, Combs believ he is steppg to his purpose. “It clicked and went om me to we, that [I] was sent here not to jt do those thgs that are kd of rooted personal succs but to be able to transfer to we, and do thgs that are real change and munal succs.” He drops the journal on the table as he tells me this. That ma me wonr: Who is guidg Combs’s growth his Love era?</p><p class="paywall">“I feel like God sent me, God, put on my heart, ‘What’s your purpose?’ I was lookg at all the thgs, ’s preachers and jt different people talkg about purpose bee I was like, man, purpose is somethg ep. Have I really found my purpose? I know I’m makg money and I’m succsful and I’m changg the game so lled, but is that my purpose? Belafonte ed his celebry stat to raise money for civil rights actns and anizatns. He has been vol about his disillnment wh morn celebry’s lack of social rponsibily, pecially among Black celebri. Belafonte’s 2012 ments that “high-profile artists” have “turned their back on social rponsibily” lled Combs’s peer Jay-Z out by name. (Belafonte and Jay-Z have sce renciled their public differenc.) The crique uld jt have easily been lobbed at Combs. Or, rather, at Puff Daddy and Diddy. He do not name this crique directly, but Combs seems aware of Belafonte’s penchant for crique. That is, part, why Combs lled Belafonte when God spoke to him about his purpose.</p><p class="paywall">Combs says Belafonte was a mol for the kd of activism he envisns for this next stage of his public life. “I was like, we were siar suatns. You know what I’m sayg? Comg om where we were havg a posn of power, beg celebri, and I was wonrg, how did [Belafonte] get so dug to [social actn]? And really ditg his life.” He has always been dited to somethg. But whereas young Combs’s ditn was to fay, iends, and makg enough money to buy the kd of eedom he felt like the world was nyg him, the elr Combs is dited to makg that eedom possible for others. He says he looked through “history” and at his own bgraphy durg his journey to the Love era. In that exvatn he saw the makgs of someone sted to save his people. “The person that was able to go and do Bad Boy, if he’s charge of brgg together, sounds like, ‘That’s the right motherfucker.’ ”</p><p class="paywall">I believe Combs. I also believe the women church who say God told them someone else’s man is their hband. If they like , then I love . Still, if I uld ask the women church one thg, would be the same thg I tried to ask Combs wh ltle succs: I believe God told you that you have been chosen…but did he tell everyone else?</p><p class="has-dropp paywall"><strong>Sean “Love” Combs</strong> is a man standg at the crossroads of several sea chang. He is a not-so-young man whose legimacy as a cultural in hg on his power to gate-keep youth culture. The fluencer culture has taken the prototyp that Combs helped novate and mixed merce wh social nscns. It is no longer enough to look slick or create the newt dance. Today’s celebry has to have a posn on climate change, whe supremacy, LGBTQ+ equaly, and polics. Combs is also a girl dad. He has six children, three of whom are 14-year-old girls at the time we speak. He wants his dghters to her the keys to his kgdom equal parts wh his three sons. Raisg a tr of girl boss tun a dad to the #MeToo movement. Combs is lookg back at the ternatnal playboy of his youth and a near future where his dghters bee young women. And above all, Combs is tryg to do the brand eratn that ma him succsful a climate that is openly hostile to what his brand reprents. Combs’s “Black excellence” is, practice, a celebratn of Black palism. And, if you have not noticed, a lot of people have labeled palism as enemy number one. It is a cultural high wire perhaps too th for a diddy bop.</p><p class="paywall">That won’t stop Combs om tryg. He lnched a diversy trag program wh the powerful Enavor this summer. The six-week urse is dubbed, te Combs fashn, “the Excellence Program,” and is signed to support aspirg entertament executiv hailg om unrreprented muni. It at a time when the entertament agency mol has e unr fire for s lack of racial diversy. It is part of Combs’s sire to e his platform for llective good. But his unrstandg of what nstut good may be at odds wh the muni om whom he draws some of his spiratn.</p><p class="paywall">In the sprg of 2021, Combs published an open letter to “rporate Ameri” which he mand that pani crease their spendg wh Black-owned media bs, sayg that “cremental progrs” ad-spend pary is unacceptable. Combs se himself as advotg for the Black nsumer the “If You Love Us, Pay Us” missive. But crics were quick to say his llout was hypocril, part bee Combs owns Revolt, a ble TV work that urts advertisg dollars. Rapper Noname is the kd of artist who would have been difficult to image Puff Daddy’s heyday. Noname is a fiercely pennt rapper who, along wh other ntemporary artists like Chance the Rapper, rebuffs the tradnal rerd-label al as both an artistic and polil statement.</p><p class="paywall">Former Bad Boy artists The LOX and Mase have publicly cricized Combs for trappg them what they felt were unfair als the past. Black palism, Noname alleg, would have one celebrate Combs’s dividual succs as social progrs. She said on Twter that Combs was “shamg whe rporatns for a palist bs mol he almost pletely replited.” This is not an isolated crique. It is a generatnal one. Younger dienc are rejectg uncril boosterism of palism. And a wir swath across pop culture, nsumers are monstratg a willgns to mand more om their para-social bti. That stct is que strong among young Black dienc, many of whom participated Black Liv Matter protts over the last two years. Hip-hop artists n still make a song like “Party and Bullsh,” for sure. But they nnot make whout the dience phg back on whether the bullsh was nsensual and if the party had a purpose.</p><div data-attr-viewport-monor="le-recirc" class="le-recirc-wrapper le-recirc-observer-target-3 viewport-monor-anchor"></div><p class="paywall">For his part, Combs tells me that he is not worried about brgg along those who disagree wh him. “I n’t get ught up that. I know where my heart is at, and you n’t jt do alone wh jt Black people. You got to have all typ of alli. And that’s one thg I’m good at, I’m good at beg a unifier, but I’m not gog to be a room wh other trib that protect themselv and make sure that they straight and not make sure that we straight. But also, I’m not a polician, I’m not tryg to be the kg or the dictator of somebody. I’m a boy om Harlem that me here to make a change. We all have our story.”</p><asi aria-hidn="te" class="PullQuoteEmbedWrapper-sc-EoVjf fQbAzo"><div class="PullQuoteDerativeBorr-sc-iUyOLj UnBFT"></div><div class="PullQuoteEmbedContent-sc-kTcfhx fThoFL"><p class="paywall">“<strong>LOVE IS A MISSION….</strong> We have the ter, we have the power, we have a culture, I have on a <strong>FIVE-YEAR PLAN.</strong>”</p></div></asi><p class="paywall">Combs’s story is a hood Horat Alger tale. He started om the bottom and now he is here, as were. It was a hero’s tale that ma sense for where the culture was 1999, even where was 2005. The 15 years before the 2008 Great Recsn were a perd of unbridled enomic optimism. It was the era of the htle, and Black youth culture translated to an ethos, an inty, and an iology. Lter Spence is a profsor of polil science and Aina studi at Johns Hopks Universy. In his book on Black neoliberalism, he lls this hip-hop ethos the “Can’t Knock the Htle” mythology of morn Black palism. That myth ma sense the year 2000, when Black Ameri, particular, was battlg the war on dgs by extractg every ounce of opportuny om Bill Clton’s expandg enomy. Before fancial bubbl started burstg rapid succsn the 2000s, htlg felt mocratic. Anyone wh the right dream and the right grd uld make out of the hood, sometim lerally but ually metaphorilly. In 2021, htlg don’t sound fun. It sounds like the ddgery is, a set of pg rpons to a hostile social orr that has left lns of people behd. That kd of moment requir a different kd of story and maybe a different kd of storyteller. It isn’t that the htle is ad, but that valorizatn of the htle culture is surely on the rop. Hip-hop’s re nstuency wants to bate the veracy of htlg when predatory mortgag, stunt loan bt, risg rent, flat wag, and surveillance police stat choke the very life out of Black liv, Black hop, and Black htle. That don’t worry Combs. He thks the revolutn is foretold and his place has already been wrten by God. He is more worried that we have talked so much about ser stuff that we fot to have fun. Fun is Combs’s real bag, and he do not want dienc to fet that above all, Love is supposed to feel good. God didn’t jt give him a purpose. God also brought Combs to alignment wh his hight <em>equency.</em> “The fun part is the equency,” he exclaims. “The fun part [of the Love era] is the mic, the beat, the style, the rhythm, the walk, the talk, the fashn, the joy, the travels, the plac we have never been before.”</p><p class="paywall">As we are wdg down our time together, Combs keeps returng to the equency. He wants to create a vibe for the world to groove to. He v me back for a Soul Food Sunday bnch, llg an example of the Love-era equency he is all about creatg. He emphasiz that the soul food is healthy and the vibe is next-level. He looks potedly at the rerr that has been between all day, always part of his awarens. “I’m g back to mic, you know?” The room ps for a dramatic beat. Combs obvly wants this on the rerd, and is also clearly news to his team. Ever ntrol of his narrative, he issu the fal word by tellg me that he is startg a new rerd label. It will be an all R&B label bee that is the mic that mak Love Combs happy.</p><p class="paywall">As his publicist looks alarmed at the unplanned disclosure, Combs tells me R&B is where he started. It is time that he home, not jt for himself but for the culture. “Yeah, all R&B label, bee I feel like R&B was abandoned and ’s a part of our Ain Amerin culture. And I’m not signg any artists. Bee if you know better, you do better. I’m dog 50–50 partnerships wh pure transparency. That’s the thg. [The new label is so that] we n own the genre; we don’t own hip-hop right now. We have a chance to—and I’m gog to make sure that—we own R&B.” And there’s the cx of Sean Combs, the man and the culture maker. He believ wng is his birthright, and he wants to share that wh the world. It has worked before, and Combs is bettg that he n make work aga. And so Biggie had lled me Diddy bee of my bop, the way I walk, my swagger, and they got somethg lled the diddy bop, that jt, jt happens to, ’s not me, was somethg before me. That’s the diddy bop. He also is humble and empathetic. Personal loss shak him. The mother of three of his six children, Kim Porter, died 2018. His mentor and iend Andre Harrell died 2020. He talks eely about how private loss moved him to rensir his life’s work. Combs scrib Porter as the love of his life. His dghters want him to settle down and get out of the streets. He knows what you are thkg, but he says there is no reason to expect a rx of the Diddy-Lopez romance. He and are jt iends. Of the social media post that set tongu waggg over the summer, he says that was jt a throwback post om a great time his life. And I don’t have nothg to say about her relatnship or her life.” Over the several hours we spend together at Combs’s home and later on Zoom, is clear that if any woman was gog to tie the renowned playboy down, would have been Porter. “And so, you know, I had to start to al wh when I lost Kim. ’Cse I was like, man, you had . I’m not sayg I would do any of differently. God willg—I would have had more time,” he says, then adds, “I look at my life as I got a send chance. I am amazed when he brgs up #MeToo before mentng Black Liv Matter. “If you livg on this earth and you tryg to keep on alg wh this sh, that a’t the way we gog to live. And people out there that are tired of . And ’s not jt a Black and whe thg. You know what I’m sayg? It’s jt tired of the way that don’t have to be. Like when they said was over—when they said the #MeToo, when was over, was over,” he says emphatilly.</p><p class="paywall">Combs se #MeToo as a qualified sign of progrs and evince that celebri n change the world. “The #MeToo movement, the tth, is that spired me. It showed me that you n get maximum change,” he says. What Combs wants now is for that maximum change to e for his tribe. Enter the Love era.</p><p class="has-dropp paywall"><strong>I rolled my ey</strong> when I first heard about Combs’s new name, Love. He announced a social media statement May and followed up wh a picture of the driver’s license that lists Love as his legal middle name. It is easy to be glib about the rebrandg. On a lser man sounds like an anthropomorphized “Live Lgh Love” sign om a disunt r store. But this is Sean Combs we are talkg about. He do not ask his people to brg snacks. He asks them to set up a “sexy suatn.” His stct for elevatg the mundane to an experience is part of his charm and his succs. What do he have planned for the Love era? Combs is on a missn to lead a five-year takeover of…somethg. Perhaps of everythg? The tails are, shall we say, a ltle murky, but the passn is there. “I feel like that’s one of the biggt missns that will actually shift thgs. But bis that, we—the world—is different. We have the ter, we have the power, we have a culture, I have on a five-year plan.” That plan is for Black people, although Combs is reful to say that he lov everyone. This isn’t the Black preacher elegy. It has more fury and a faster nce. It is like a tt hip-hop verse. Combs wants to mol what lovg onelf n do for llective Black actn. In the wake of #MeToo and Black Liv Matter, Combs went lookg for guidance. He jumps up durg his recatn on Black love to retrieve a small journal. It looks out of place the home’s curated opulence. The tan, embossed ver has a ty lock, like a teenager’s first diary. The unled pag have quot wrten on them large block letters. Combs flips to the first page. It is a Jam Baldw quote: “Love do not beg and end the way we seem to thk do. Love is a battle, love is a war; love is a growg up.”</p><div data-attr-viewport-monor="le-recirc" class="le-recirc-wrapper le-recirc-observer-target-2 viewport-monor-anchor"></div><p class="paywall">Growg up for Combs has meant g back to God. Diddy had “gotten so far om God,” Combs tells me. He had hunger and visn but was “so small.” Now, Combs believ he is steppg to his purpose. “It clicked and went om me to we, that [I] was sent here not to jt do those thgs that are kd of rooted personal succs but to be able to transfer to we, and do thgs that are real change and munal succs.” He drops the journal on the table as he tells me this. Belafonte’s 2012 ments that “high-profile artists” have “turned their back on social rponsibily” lled Combs’s peer Jay-Z out by name. (Belafonte and Jay-Z have sce renciled their public differenc.) The crique uld jt have easily been lobbed at Combs. Or, rather, at Puff Daddy and Diddy. He do not name this crique directly, but Combs seems aware of Belafonte’s penchant for crique. That is, part, why Combs lled Belafonte when God spoke to him about his purpose.</p><p class="paywall">Combs says Belafonte was a mol for the kd of activism he envisns for this next stage of his public life. “I was like, we were siar suatns. You know what I’m sayg? Comg om where we were havg a posn of power, beg celebri, and I was wonrg, how did [Belafonte] get so dug to [social actn]? And really ditg his life.” He has always been dited to somethg. But whereas young Combs’s ditn was to fay, iends, and makg enough money to buy the kd of eedom he felt like the world was nyg him, the elr Combs is dited to makg that eedom possible for others. He says he looked through “history” and at his own bgraphy durg his journey to the Love era. In that exvatn he saw the makgs of someone sted to save his people. “The person that was able to go and do Bad Boy, if he’s charge of brgg together, sounds like, ‘That’s the right motherfucker.’ ”</p><p class="paywall">I believe Combs. I also believe the women church who say God told them someone else’s man is their hband. If they like , then I love . Still, if I uld ask the women church one thg, would be the same thg I tried to ask Combs wh ltle succs: I believe God told you that you have been chosen…but did he tell everyone else?</p><p class="has-dropp paywall"><strong>Sean “Love” Combs</strong> is a man standg at the crossroads of several sea chang. He is a not-so-young man whose legimacy as a cultural in hg on his power to gate-keep youth culture. The fluencer culture has taken the prototyp that Combs helped novate and mixed merce wh social nscns. It is no longer enough to look slick or create the newt dance. Today’s celebry has to have a posn on climate change, whe supremacy, LGBTQ+ equaly, and polics. Combs is also a girl dad. He has six children, three of whom are 14-year-old girls at the time we speak. He wants his dghters to her the keys to his kgdom equal parts wh his three sons. Raisg a tr of girl boss tun a dad to the #MeToo movement. Combs is lookg back at the ternatnal playboy of his youth and a near future where his dghters bee young women. And above all, Combs is tryg to do the brand eratn that ma him succsful a climate that is openly hostile to what his brand reprents. Combs’s “Black excellence” is, practice, a celebratn of Black palism. And, if you have not noticed, a lot of people have labeled palism as enemy number one. It is a cultural high wire perhaps too th for a diddy bop.</p><p class="paywall">That won’t stop Combs om tryg. He lnched a diversy trag program wh the powerful Enavor this summer. The six-week urse is dubbed, te Combs fashn, “the Excellence Program,” and is signed to support aspirg entertament executiv hailg om unrreprented muni. It at a time when the entertament agency mol has e unr fire for s lack of racial diversy. It is part of Combs’s sire to e his platform for llective good. But his unrstandg of what nstut good may be at odds wh the muni om whom he draws some of his spiratn.</p><p class="paywall">In the sprg of 2021, Combs published an open letter to “rporate Ameri” which he mand that pani crease their spendg wh Black-owned media bs, sayg that “cremental progrs” ad-spend pary is unacceptable. Combs se himself as advotg for the Black nsumer the “If You Love Us, Pay Us” missive. But crics were quick to say his llout was hypocril, part bee Combs owns Revolt, a ble TV work that urts advertisg dollars. Rapper Noname is the kd of artist who would have been difficult to image Puff Daddy’s heyday. Noname is a fiercely pennt rapper who, along wh other ntemporary artists like Chance the Rapper, rebuffs the tradnal rerd-label al as both an artistic and polil statement.</p><p class="paywall">Former Bad Boy artists The LOX and Mase have publicly cricized Combs for trappg them what they felt were unfair als the past. Black palism, Noname alleg, would have one celebrate Combs’s dividual succs as social progrs. She said on Twter that Combs was “shamg whe rporatns for a palist bs mol he almost pletely replited.” This is not an isolated crique. It is a generatnal one. Younger dienc are rejectg uncril boosterism of palism. And a wir swath across pop culture, nsumers are monstratg a willgns to mand more om their para-social bti. That stct is que strong among young Black dienc, many of whom participated Black Liv Matter protts over the last two years. Hip-hop artists n still make a song like “Party and Bullsh,” for sure. But they nnot make whout the dience phg back on whether the bullsh was nsensual and if the party had a purpose.</p><div data-attr-viewport-monor="le-recirc" class="le-recirc-wrapper le-recirc-observer-target-3 viewport-monor-anchor"></div><p class="paywall">For his part, Combs tells me that he is not worried about brgg along those who disagree wh him. “I n’t get ught up that. I know where my heart is at, and you n’t jt do alone wh jt Black people. You got to have all typ of alli. And that’s one thg I’m good at, I’m good at beg a unifier, but I’m not gog to be a room wh other trib that protect themselv and make sure that they straight and not make sure that we straight. But also, I’m not a polician, I’m not tryg to be the kg or the dictator of somebody. I’m a boy om Harlem that me here to make a change. We all have our story.”</p><asi aria-hidn="te" class="PullQuoteEmbedWrapper-sc-EoVjf fQbAzo"><div class="PullQuoteDerativeBorr-sc-iUyOLj UnBFT"></div><div class="PullQuoteEmbedContent-sc-kTcfhx fThoFL"><p class="paywall">“<strong>LOVE IS A MISSION….</strong> We have the ter, we have the power, we have a culture, I have on a <strong>FIVE-YEAR PLAN.</strong>”</p></div></asi><p class="paywall">Combs’s story is a hood Horat Alger tale. He started om the bottom and now he is here, as were. It was a hero’s tale that ma sense for where the culture was 1999, even where was 2005. The 15 years before the 2008 Great Recsn were a perd of unbridled enomic optimism. It was the era of the htle, and Black youth culture translated to an ethos, an inty, and an iology. Lter Spence is a profsor of polil science and Aina studi at Johns Hopks Universy. In his book on Black neoliberalism, he lls this hip-hop ethos the “Can’t Knock the Htle” mythology of morn Black palism. That myth ma sense the year 2000, when Black Ameri, particular, was battlg the war on dgs by extractg every ounce of opportuny om Bill Clton’s expandg enomy. Before fancial bubbl started burstg rapid succsn the 2000s, htlg felt mocratic. Anyone wh the right dream and the right grd uld make out of the hood, sometim lerally but ually metaphorilly. In 2021, htlg don’t sound fun. It sounds like the ddgery is, a set of pg rpons to a hostile social orr that has left lns of people behd. That kd of moment requir a different kd of story and maybe a different kd of storyteller. It isn’t that the htle is ad, but that valorizatn of the htle culture is surely on the rop. Hip-hop’s re nstuency wants to bate the veracy of htlg when predatory mortgag, stunt loan bt, risg rent, flat wag, and surveillance police stat choke the very life out of Black liv, Black hop, and Black htle. That don’t worry Combs. He thks the revolutn is foretold and his place has already been wrten by God. He is more worried that we have talked so much about ser stuff that we fot to have fun. Fun is Combs’s real bag, and he do not want dienc to fet that above all, Love is supposed to feel good. God didn’t jt give him a purpose. God also brought Combs to alignment wh his hight <em>equency.</em> “The fun part is the equency,” he exclaims. “The fun part [of the Love era] is the mic, the beat, the style, the rhythm, the walk, the talk, the fashn, the joy, the travels, the plac we have never been before.”</p><p class="paywall">As we are wdg down our time together, Combs keeps returng to the equency. He wants to create a vibe for the world to groove to. He v me back for a Soul Food Sunday bnch, llg an example of the Love-era equency he is all about creatg. He emphasiz that the soul food is healthy and the vibe is next-level. He looks potedly at the rerr that has been between all day, always part of his awarens. “I’m g back to mic, you know?” The room ps for a dramatic beat. Combs obvly wants this on the rerd, and is also clearly news to his team. Ever ntrol of his narrative, he issu the fal word by tellg me that he is startg a new rerd label. It will be an all R&B label bee that is the mic that mak Love Combs happy.</p><p class="paywall">As his publicist looks alarmed at the unplanned disclosure, Combs tells me R&B is where he started. It is time that he home, not jt for himself but for the culture. “Yeah, all R&B label, bee I feel like R&B was abandoned and ’s a part of our Ain Amerin culture. And I’m not signg any artists. Bee if you know better, you do better. I’m dog 50–50 partnerships wh pure transparency. That’s the thg. [The new label is so that] we n own the genre; we don’t own hip-hop right now. We have a chance to—and I’m gog to make sure that—we own R&B.” And there’s the cx of Sean Combs, the man and the culture maker. He believ wng is his birthright, and he wants to share that wh the world. It has worked before, and Combs is bettg that he n make work aga.
