And bars terg to lbians and people of lor, and those centerg on certa kks, have closed at a faster rate than bars for gay men.</p></div><div class="streamfield-paragraph rte-text"><p>As of early 2021, only three wily known lbian bars were open New York Cy: Henrietta Hudson, Cubbyhole and Gger's Bar. I know lawyers.’”</p><p>Msag also arrived through the bar’s social media acunts.</p><p>“They were like, ‘Cubbyhole is where I met my partner’... ‘Cubbyhole’s where I had my first kiss’... ‘It's where they me out’... ‘It's where my partner and I went before she passed away,’” Mencho said. “It got me out of my funk.”</p><p>Bolstered by muny support and a <a href=" rel="noopener" target="_blank">crowdfundg mpaign</a>, Cubbyhole was able to raise nearly $80,000 – and now remas open to celebrate another Pri Month.</p></div><div class="streamfield-paragraph rte-text"><p>Mattson propos that one reason New York Cy was spared om the wir cle LGBTQ+ bars was bee of the area’s ncentratn of wealthy rints.</p><p>“New York Cy bars were some of the most succsful at crowdfundg durg panmic,” he said. “So, even as New York Cy bars are prsed by gentrifitn, some of those same forc also allowed them to tap more fancial rourc to survive the panmic.”</p><p>Mattson also c tourism, and he’s not alone. Jack Jen Giekg, who’s wrg a book about the history of lbian bars, attribut New York Cy’s stat as an LGBTQ+ mec to the Stonewall Inn, a Greenwich Village bar that was the se of an uprisg by patrons agast police harassment. The event triggered the start of the gay liberatn movement.</p><p>For the 40th anniversary of the Stonewall uprisg 2009, New York Cy officials promoted the cy as an LGBTQ+ tourist statn. They created a marketg mpaign unr the slogan <a href=" rel="noopener" target="_blank">“Rabow Pilgrimage”</a> so people uld pay homage to the cy’s var LGBTQ+ s.</p><p>“There's this ia, regardls of what age or history or natnaly or genr or sexualy, that you're a part of this,” said Giekg. “If you hear any LGBTQ history, whatever untry you e om, you hear about Stonewall.”</p><p>Juli’, a two-mute walk away om Stonewall, is one of the olst ntuoly n gay bars New York Cy. They challenged the New York State Liquor Authory's policy that a bar uld have s liquor license revoked if staff knowgly served “homosexuals.” Their act of civil disobedience paved the way for the legalizatn of openly LGBTQ+ bars New York state.</p><p>“As time progrs and thgs change, 's gonna get easier for the next generatn,” said Helen Buford, owner of Juli’. “But you also have to learn that history. I thk that part is important.”</p><p>Now, tourism acunts for lns of visors om around the world, many of whom pour money to the cy’s LGBTQ+ bars. Giekg says rints and tourists alike want to vis plac like Stonewall and Juli’ bee they want to be a part of that history – to “experience what means to be gay,” he said.</p><p>“Where would you fd other gay people? You go to a gay bar, you go to a gay neighborhood,” he said.
