In the early 1970s a number of GLF supporters lived squats Brixton, and formed the South London Gay Communy Centre at 78 Railton Road. From 1981-2010, The Fridge nightclub, found by Andrew Czezowski, Town Hall Para was one of London’s most popular gay clubs.

THE ONLY GAY BAR BRIXTON - SW9 BAR

From 1992-2001, Love Mcle was a popular gay night on Saturdays and drew thoands of followers om all over London. The Loughborough Hotel beme a gay venue the 1980s and early 1990s. The Prce of Wal on the rner of Coldharbour Lane and Brixton Road was a gay venue until 1987.

Gay Pri (see London Pri) held s ftival Brockwell Park 1993 and 1994 – Lambeth town hall flew a eedom flag. The only gay (now gay-iendly) venue left Brixton is the fé bar and rtrant SW9 at 11 Dorrell Place.

In 1999, David Copeland planted a nail bomb Electric Avenue, directed agast the lol black muny, jurg about 50 people, as part of his hate mpaign which also clud bombs Brick Lane (directed agast the Asian Communy) and the Admiral Dunn, Soho, directed agast the gay muny. ↑ Gay News issue 66 'PAL Plans' and issue 71 reportg move to Vxhall.

BRIXTON GAY PRI POP PARTY AT THE EFA SOCIAL, FRI 30TH JUNE 2023 – OPEN TILL 1AM, EE ALL NIGHT!

The South London Gay Communy Centre. Determed to brg the gay inty to light, a group of gay and queer people began occupyg and squattg at 78 Railton Road March of 1974, turng to the South London Gay Communy Centre. The Gay Centre worked wh other muny-based groups the area to challenge prejudice, discrimatn, placency, and much more.

Origally known as the South London Gay Theatre Group, the Brixton Faeri produced a plethora of productns attackg patriarchal valu and brgg to light the opprsn they faced. Some notable performanc clu “Mr Punchs Nuclear Fay” which showed the vastatg effects of patriarchal valu and male-domated thory, and “Out of It” which reflects the relatnship between patriarchal valu, fascism, and extrem of Christian moraly and their ntributn to gay opprsn. The sectn outlawed the promotn of homosexualy as a “pretend fay relatnship.

1970: UK Gay Liberatn Front (GLF) was found at the London School of Enomics.

Inially clud gay men and lbians mted to femist goals and revolutnary change. The event prompted the birth of the Natnal Gay News Defense Commtee (NGNDC). Early 1970s: “Gay Days” and other events held across London brgg together LGBTQ people.

1 July 1972: England’s first Gay Pri March. March 1974: 78 Railton Road squatted by the South London Gay Liberatn beg the UK’s first gay center.

7 Augt 1976: Gay Pri hosted/anized by Brixton Gay’s. 1978: Brixton Gays support Anti-Nazi League March, Rock Agast Racism ftival Brockwell Park. 1988: Sectn 28 of the Lol Government Act barred lol thori om ‘promotg’ homosexualy.

A secret gay bar owned by a black bisexual woman opened on a quiet street Brixton 1977, across om a pub notor for not allowg black or gay people si. It was a risky cisn to take at the time due to proment racist and homophobic views.

The landlord of the pub nearby, The Gee which was on the rner of Efa Para and Railton Road, was reportedly known to be a racist and attracted further anger om the lol muny when he banned gays 1975.

She opened up the gay bar - lled Pearl's Shebeen - around 1977, though exact dat are hard to nfirm.

It was the only gay bar operatg Brixton at the time, and after Pearl stopped sellg alhol 1980 for fear of a police raid, many years would pass until another gay bar would pop up the area. There were plenty of unrground gay bars across London, but most of them were domated by whe people, makg Pearl’s bar unique.
