On 7 June 2003 Gene Robson be the first openly gay bishop the Epispal church of the US; on 3 Augt 2022 Archbishop Jt Welby “affirms validy” of the 1998 Lambeth claratn that homosexual relatnships are patible wh scripture (Jt Welby ‘affirms validy’ of 1998 gay sex is s claratn, 2 Augt). Ian GordonFolktone, Kent The affirmatn that gay sex is a s will e much nsternatn, cludg among many Anglins who regnise the sufferg that this regrsive posn has flicted on gay people. William BartramHampton, Greater London I spect that a lot of people will share my disgt at the affirmatn that gay sex is a s.
In an unual move, the Archbishop of Canterbury has nmned a senr Nigerian archbishop for homophobic ments. But Jt Welby's posn on gay Christians and same-sex marriage remas unclear. In a statement published on his webse on Friday, the Archbishop of Canterbury has nounced the Nigerian archbishop the Most Reverend Henry C Nduba for likeng homosexualy to a “adly vis”.
If the Anglin Church mak pronouncements on the matter of homosexualy, they tend to be eher nmnatory or, more recently, half-hearted.

They have ually appeased neher the fahful nor the gay populatn.
Unfortunately, for anyone hopg that the Church may have reversed s posn on same-sex attractn and that this was the first olive branch, Welby softened the blow by cg two paragraphs of a rolutn om the 1998 Lambeth Conference: one of the paragraphs affirms that to be homosexual is to live opposn to scripture; a subsequent paragraph stat that the nference nnot approve of the blsg of same-sex unns. The Nigerian archbishop was rpondg to a 'pastoral' statement ma on January 19 by the Anglin Church of North Ameri (ACNA), which, although affirmed the Christian stance that same-sex attractn is patible wh scripture, acknowledged that gay people have been ma to feel visible by the Church.
There was nothg radil the statement, which at one pot gave crence to nversn therapy, and after a verbose few paragraphs nclud that uldn't even e the phrase "gay Christian" bee is too “problematic”. Provg that wh the Anglin Church there are numero gre of homophobia, Nduba lled even this statement “tantamount to a subtle pulatn to regnise and promote same-sex relatns among s members”. Strangely, he went on to say that "gay Christian" was as oxymoronic a term as "Christian murrer" or "Christian terrorist" – spe the fact that, ultimately, the ACNA statement sentially me to the same ncln (albe wh ls flammatory language).

He then voked scripture – Le 13:20-21 and Galatians 5:9 – to liken homosexualy to “yeast that should be urgently and radilly expunged” se “affects the whole dough”. He lled on the ANCA to nmn the gay “activists” their midst. In an terview wh GQ 2017 he proved that homosexualy is a moral problem wh which he is still wrtlg, refg to nmn outright and acknowledgg that same-sex relatnships n boast all the fahfulns and stabily of oppose-sex relatnships.
Although Jt Welby, the archbishop of Canterbury, recently affirmed the validy of a 1998 claratn that gay sex was a s, there are signs that the C of E may be movg towards allowg clergy to follow their nscience on the issue. Anglin church the US, Stland and Canada have already moved to start nductg same-sex weddgs, while the church Wal has started offerg blsgs to married gay upl. The recent upheaval wh the Anglin Church of North Ameri (ACNA) about “gay Anglins” stems om ignorg this le.
This, seems to me, is what’s happeng the “gay Anglin” bacle. The Pastoral Statement sgl out, therefore, the language of “gay Christians” (and also “same-sex attracted Christians”) as a “subtle shift om intifitn Christ by modifyg our Christian inty wh personal orientatns and attractn. It begs, “Dear Gay Anglins, ” flagrantly floutg the heart of the Pastoral Statement.
