A blizzard had dumped more than a foot of snow on the cy, and Moss was barely visible behd her srf, hat, and sunglass. She discsed removg some recyclg bs on the day of the shoot. “We good, Boss?” she asked an assistant director, Michael Johnson, known as MJ.</p><p class="paywall">“Yeah, Boss,” he replied. Moss told me, “We all jt ll everybody Boss. MJ’s Boss, I’m Boss—or Moss Boss.”</p><p class="paywall">At a civic center that would double as the exterr of a mue, Moss surveyed a spot where extras would assemble. “I’ve tend to thk like a director for a while,” she told me, mentng that she’d been volved the tactile world-buildg of “Handmaid’s” sce the begng. When Moss took up directg, she asked every director she enuntered (W Anrson, Taika Wai) for advice. Ben Stiller remd her not to shortchange herself as an actor when she need another take. At fifteen, she faced a choice: apply for year-round ballet programs or pursue actg. “I remember thkg, I want to have a reer past thirty-five,” she said. She knew she wanted to be a full-time actrs: “I was, like, I don’t know why I need algebra.”</p><p class="paywall">As a teen-ager wh gawky featur, Moss began to figure out where she f Hollywood. “I wasn’t the perfect-cheerlear type. I uldn’t get one of those WB shows to save my fuckg life,” she said. “It was also to do wh my style as an actor, which was kd of weird, and remas kd of weird. I was not very good at playg somethg straight.” In 1999, she appeared as an stutnalized burn victim “Girl, Interpted” and began her role on “The Wt Wg,” as Zoey Bartlet. It was only after I got the part that I realized was Aaron Sork.”</p><p class="paywall">At neteen, Moss moved to New York to act an Off Broadway play, “Franny’s Way,” alongsi Mart Srse’s dghter Domeni. (The <em>Tim</em> wrote that both actrs “mix fensive malice and vulnerabily.”) After the n, she moved to an apartment Stuyvant Town that she found on Craigslist and shared wh a fiftysomethg man whose name, she thks, was eher Johnny or Walter. “He had the livg room, which had a partn, and I had the bedroom, which had a mattrs on the floor,” she relled. “He was a substute teacher, so he was gone durg the day, and I was neteen, so I was kd of out all night.” She stayed the apartment for three or four years. In 2003, she starred an die film lled “Virg,” as a pregnant teen-ager who believ she is rryg the child of God, and was nomated for an Inpennt Spir Award. But she was often short on sh, and Johnny-slash-Walter would sometim ver her four-hundred-dollar rent. She had no backup plan and no day job. “It was this weird juxtaposn of beg a super ty b famo but then also havg absolutely no money,” she said. “I’d go, ‘I don’t thk I n get another job. They’re gog to be, like, Why is Zoey Bartlet workg at the ffee shop?’ ”</p><p class="paywall">After years of termtent rol, she dned for “Mad Men.” She showed up lookg like a “beachy California girl”: long blond hair, tanned sk, skimpy halter drs. “I looked nothg like Peggy,” she said. But she got the part. “I jt knew who she fuckg was. It felt like puttg on the most fortable sweater you own. It felt like a good cktail.”</p><p class="paywall">In the first season of “Mad Men,” Peggy is so naïve that she don’t realize she’s pregnant until she go to labor. She kept only one stume om the show, the purple drs she wears that scene. “I don’t know if was my favore scene to shoot, but was the most real,” she told me. “Bee I was jt about to go do ‘Top of the Lake,’ and I had this feelg of leavg the nt, and that I was gog to go off and try somethg new.”</p><p class="paywall">Among the “Mad Men” st, Moss has had the most adventuro post-show reer. Josephe Decker, who directed “Shirley,” told me, “She’s drawn to really plited material.” But Decker admted that there was “an ocean of Lizzie” that remaed enigmatic to her: “I never talked to her about the Scientology thg, but I’m really cur about .”</p><p class="has-dropp has-dropp__lead-standard-headg paywall">The Scientology thg. In my time wh her, she had been iendly and accsible. “I don’t want to e off as beg gey,” she said. “If you and I met, jt hangg out as iends, I’m, like, an open book about .” But, she add, “I don’t want people to be distracted by somethg when they’re watchg me. I want them to be seeg the character. I feel like, when actors reveal too much of their liv, I’m sometim watchg somethg and I’m gog, Oh, I know that she jt broke up wh that person, or, I know that she lov to do hot yoga, or whatever is.”</p><div data-attr-viewport-monor="le-recirc" class="le-recirc-wrapper le-recirc-observer-target-5 viewport-monor-anchor"></div><p class="paywall">I told her that people are already distracted by —that they don’t always know how to hold the public and the private Lizzi their md. Sg, she replied, “People n obvly hold their md whatever they want to, and I n’t ntrol that. If ’s not that, ’s gog to be somethg else.” She smeared on lip balm and ntued, “It’s not really a closed-off relign. It’s a place that is very open to, like, welg somebody who wants to learn more about . She scratched her neck, thkg, and said, “Communitn is somethg that I obvly e so much, not only my job but my terpersonal relatnships as well. (The Church lls the allegatns “false and mischaracterized.”) I asked how a viewer of “The Handmaid’s Tale” might rencile the two thgs.</p><p class="paywall">“I would jt enurage people to fd out for themselv,” Moss said, a le she would repeat several tim. “I’ve certaly been guilty of readg an article or watchg somethg and takg that as gospel.” She said that she thought was important to reflect her own valu the work she do. “And obvly somethg like relig eedom and ristance agast a theocracy is very important to me.”</p><p class="paywall">I asked Margaret Atwood, who scrib herself as a “strict agnostic,” the same qutn. She replied, “I don’t thk ’s a qutn of a relign as such. I thk ’s a qutn of who’s nng , and what are they g for. What kd of power are they exertg over other people, benign or not? As far as I n tell, there’s a Hollywood versn of Scientology. I mean, the origs are jt batty, but pared to what?” Then she told me about the Pastafarians, a satiril relig group that worships a spaghetti god and whose members have sued for the right to wear lanrs on their heads ernment-I.D. photos.</p><p class="paywall">Scientology’s ntroversial place Hollywood has embroiled Moss some awkward moments. In 2017, she was nomated for a Televisn Crics Associatn Award for “The Handmaid’s Tale.” At the ceremony, Leah Remi, one of Scientology’s most high-profile fectors (the Church says that she was “expelled”), won for her anti-Scientology doceri. It was reported that Moss left the room durg her speech. “I went to the bathroom,” Moss told me. “I wish was more excg than that.” Remi claimed that the Church forbids Moss to speak to her bee Remi is an “antisocial personaly.” “I have never been approached by her,” Moss said. “I have never received any requt to talk to her. So there hasn’t been an opportuny for her to say that. I don’t know her that well, so ’s not like we were iends.”</p><p class="paywall">That year, Moss won her “Handmaid’s” Emmy, and she thanked her mother onstage for teachg her “that you n be kd and a fuckg badass.” <em>The Hollywood Reporter</em> ran a story which a former Scientologist claimed that swearg was part of how adherents munite “down the tone sle” to average people; Tony Ortega, who wr a Scientology whistle-blower blog, explaed, “Cursg Scientology is almost a sacrament,” havg trickled down om L. Ron Hubbard’s time the Navy. (The Church matas that “no such teachg exists.”) When I asked Moss about the story, she said, “That pissed me off. That was a really, really big moment for me, and was a big moment for my mom and me. My mom, who has supported me through the years and been such an credible mother to both me and my brother. And to tell a lie like that, about that—I didn’t serve that, and was wrong.”</p><p class="paywall">Perhaps was unfair to view Moss’s every move through the lens of Scientology, but I wonred about her ment about munitn. Later, I spoke to Mike Rr, a former senr executive the Church, who has sce bee one of s most proment crics. He said, “That’s a fundamental ncept that is sold to new people to get them to Scientology. You’ll hear a lot of Scientologists say, ‘It tght me to munite,’ bee ’s a simple, unntroversial thg. Lizzie is good at munitg her rol to dienc, so you n’t say that’s a lie. It’s a great le to e, bee ’s one of those thgs that you n’t really challenge.”</p><p class="has-dropp has-dropp__lead-standard-headg paywall">In Toronto one eveng, Moss sat her office, vionferencg on her laptop. Outsi, the wter sky grew purple and orange over a parkg lot. Moss, a hoodie and sneakers, was endg her day wh a mic-spottg ssn for “Shg Girls,” reviewg cu for an episo she had directed. She and her llaborators watched a scene which the serial killer, played by Jamie Bell, stumbl around beneath a Chigo El statn.</p><p class="paywall">“The emotn shouldn’t feel omo— should jt feel antic,” the shownner, Silka Luisa, mented. Moss threw out her gum and b to an apple. Ocsnally, when someone knocked on the door wh a “Handmaid’s Tale” qutn, she muted herself. A light snow began to fall, and soon Moss’s office was l by the glow of the Christmas lights she’d stng on the walls.</p><div data-attr-viewport-monor="le-recirc" class="le-recirc-wrapper le-recirc-observer-target-6 viewport-monor-anchor"></div><p class="paywall">In “Shg Girls,” Moss’s character, Kirby, experienc abpt shifts her life: her hair style chang, or she’ll sudnly have a hband or a different apartment. In her office, Moss turned to me and said, “This is a very important sre cue.” Onscreen, Kirby was a livg room at night, lookg outsi. Her pursuer, Harper, is out the ra, lookg . He n see her, but she n’t see him. But the two share a metaphysil nnectn. In the scene, Moss explaed, Harper “figur out that he n fuck wh me, and chaos ensu.”</p><p class="paywall">The mic was slow and sister, punctuated wh plks and a sound like sects gatherg. Someone asked how everyone felt about the sre. Moss seemed unsure, but, as she told me later, she hadn’t worked wh the poser, Cldia Sarne, before, and was “hant to take the lead.”</p><p class="paywall">Luisa was unrwhelmed. “It’s a big disvery for Harper,” she said. “So at first feels omo, and then ’s this light-bulb moment, somethg that feels a ltle distct.”</p><p class="paywall">“Exactly,” Moss chimed , relieved that someone else had said first. “It needs to be somethg that’s a ltle more unual.” Sarne said that she would rethk the cue. Moss grned. Later, I spoke to Bradley Whford aga, as he was filmg a “Handmaid’s Tale” episo unr Moss’s directn. “Yterday, I was shootg a scene where I found this weird beat,” he told me. “And she out and says, ‘That thg you found is great.
