Why did you want to start wh this story?</strong></p><div class="Contaer-bkChBi byNLHx"></div><p>I wanted to make a movie about what I knew, and there were a uple thgs that ma feel like a good story for me. One was that my mom ran a teen rehab for dgs and alhol. So I basilly grew up a rehab — my mom's rehab was the next town over and we spent all our holidays there. It was jt a huge part of my childhood. Then I was a lbian, so I wanted to tell a queer story. And I was also really spired by <em>Cluels</em>, and I wanted to tell a lbian love story where they don't kill each other at the end or someone di. I wanted to have a happy endg, like a fun romantic edy. There really weren't any the lbian world at the time. But I had also seen a great documentary about Exod Internatnal, which is like a gay rehab, and I was like, <em>Oh, this would be a great satire. I should do that</em>.</p><div data-attr-viewport-monor="le-recirc" class="le-recirc-wrapper le-recirc-observer-target-1 viewport-monor-anchor"></div><p><strong>Was difficult to secure fancg for such an overtly queer film 20 years ago?</strong></p><p>I was very lucky bee the only person who agreed to fance was the first person I asked, and he was a straight whe guy om fance. He thought, "Oh yeah, like a <em>Cluels</em>-type movie. Great." He thought that was really normal <em>bee</em> he wasn't g om the queer muny, which at the time, was like, <em>How dare you make a edy when we're all stgglg wh the AIDS crisis and we're a panmic? This is horrible!</em></p><p><strong>Right.</strong></p><p>When the movie got released, I got a lot of really mean reviews, mostly om gay people, bee they were so pissed off that I had ma a edy about such a fucked up subject. I jt thk was a strange time to be makg a movie like that. But I was my twenti and I was jt my own ltle young person bubble, where seemed very normal and natural. Do you thk those ial reviews would be different if the film were jt premierg now?</strong></p><p>Y, bee I also thk that nobody was really talkg about many of the thgs the film was alg wh at the time. But as the years have gone by, they've bee very much a part of the cultural nversatn. For example, the whole issue of the bary and genr nstctn. The whole pot of <em>But I'm a Cheerlear</em> was that I was a femme lbian who was nfed bee my parents were like, “How uld you be gay? You're so feme.” And I was like, “I don't thk beg mascule or feme has anythg to do wh beg gay. They're totally separate thgs.” But wh the rise of trans power the muny, people have started talkg more about how the bary is limg every way. At the time, that wasn’t a nversatn at all. I don't thk most people red to even thk about . But young people did! And we, as the elr statmen, were exced to be able to have all the young queer actors. It was sort of like summer mp, a weird way. Ru was one of the mp unselors and I was like the TA, or somethg.</p><p><strong>When you first had a cut of the film appraised, was slapped wh an NC-17 ratg and you had to make cuts so that uld get an R ratg stead. Did you clu any of those cut scen this director's cut?</strong></p><p>When the Ratgs Board gave an NC-17, I was so fur that I mand to speak to the woman [ charge]. I asked her, “Why? It's a G movie. I ma a <em>Cluels</em>-type movie for kids.” And she said, "Look, one of the ma reasons we gave you an NC-17 is bee, the sex scene, 's so dark that we n tell you ma dark bee really terrible thgs are happeng." And I said, "That's not te at all." And she said, "If you want to get an R ratg, you need to lighten up the sex scene and show to so that we n really make sure there's no nudy the darkns."</p><div data-attr-viewport-monor="le-recirc" class="le-recirc-wrapper le-recirc-observer-target-3 viewport-monor-anchor"></div><p>To get the R ratg, the only thg I had to do was lighten the sex scene and cut one le where Melanie Lynskey says, “You went down on Graham” to Megan. But I didn’t put that le back to the director's cut — ’s still an homage to the bch at the Ratgs Board who ma me cut out. It actually mak me lgh every time, bee when I had to take that le out, [ rulted ] a total mismatch. Melanie Lynskey has glass on at first, and then I cut to Megan, and then I cut back to Melanie Lynskey and she don't have her glass on. It's like the one really obv ntuy issue. And I thk the muny was so vastated by AIDS that there wasn’t a lot of edi gog on gay cema. I wanted to skewer not only my muny, but also jt the absurdy of gay nversn.

I thk ’s better, but there’s a lot of homophobia the actg realm and that agents would still advise some of their clients not to take gay rol, pecially if their clients is gay and the closet.
