CAN YOU BE GAY THIS GAME?
Civil partnerships weren’t yet legal the UK, let alone gay marriage, and wir acknowledgement and support for transgenr people was virtually non-existent, the virtrl of the current climate repalced wh ignorance and apathy. It was a bold step forward at the time, yet retrospect is still led wh a surroundg homophobia that is damagg to the progrsn is tryg so sperately to claim as s own. Unlike the straight relatnships Fable, which often feel like they’re g om the heart, gay romanc appear to be viewed om a farcil perspective.
I suppose when society self wasn’t acceptg of gay marriage upon the game’s ial arrival, a rpectful portrayal of such ncepts weren’t on the mds of a velopment team who were tryg to create a world that felt both fahful and fantastil. Gay men realy aren’t always makg jok about how they’re bummg all of the time and are jt a uple of blok on the banter tra. Ltle Bra was still airg at the time, which is a pafully bigoted show that openly mocks gay men, transgenr women, and pretty much everyone who wasn’t a whe guy.
Though Ltle Bra stars and wrers Matt Lus is gay and David Walliams, though he often keeps his private life away om public view, has discsed havg relatnships wh men, the jok feel like punchg down rather than wkg at stereotyp as cuttg satire. Fable was a problematic step forward for queer reprentatn, and s sequels did a much better job wh gay relatnships as female playable characters and lbian relatnships allowed for a greater exprsn of romance that, while still played for lghs, didn’t feel like was aimg for anythg particularly sister. Gamers have been able to create gay lovers Fable sce the seri first lnched six years ago.
