Enpassg more than eight s of history, Gay Gotham gathers art works, prted matter like novels and newsletters, and other ephemera to reveal how queer artists and queer social works have impacted the cultural landspe of both the cy and Ameri more broadly. Prentg perd-specific maps and documentary photographs, the exhibn lot and draws nnectns between queer ins and the “gayborhoods” they lled home, allowg to ntemplate how past generatns of LGBTQ people rved out a space for the queer culture we take for granted today. I spoke wh -curator Stephen Vir about Gay Gotham, specifilly why the exhibn foc on the years between 1910 and 1995.
For Vir and -curator Donald Albrecht, there was somethg more powerful explorg the perd when gay culture was ls visible, forced unrground—but still somehow shapg Amerin life. Gay Gotham grounds s sprawlg time range 10 artistic figur: poser Leonard Bernste; artists Robert Mapplethorpe, Gee Platt Lyn, Andy Warhol, Richard Bce Nugent, Harmony Hammond, and Greer Lankton; wrer Merces Asta; ballet imprar Lln Kirste; and dancer-choreographer Bill T.
Gay Gotham celebrat how much New York’s queer muny was able to acplish durg s most difficult tim—s abily to “transcend opprsn” through artistic llaboratn. The Gay Gotham talog offers an even broar array of artists and cultural producers that touch ntemporary gay life, cludg Mae Wt, whose 1928 Broadway productn of Pleasure Man was raid and ultimately shut down by police for s pictn of drag queens. But Gay Gotham is not about ins alone.

For example, most of know that the Wt Village has been a safe haven for gays sce the turn of the century—the neighborhood still looms large the queer imagatn as the cradle of gay culture and activism, spe s more recent gentrifitn. In the 1920s, the streets offered popular but fotten venu like The Ubangi Club, where famed performer Gladys Bentley “wore male attire and sang nghty show tun, ” as well as 20 other queer venu that, acrdg to the talog wre-up, offered people “the chance to hobnob wh the neighborhood’s lbians and gay men.
” The LGBTQ empire marked out by the hot spots has sce dwdled to a handful of gay-iendly spac, but the power of that moment is still felt the work of the inic artists and cultural figur who experienced —Jam Van Der Zee, Carl Van Vechten, Richard Bce Nugent, and more.
THE MM OF THE CY OF NEW YORK TO EXAME A GAY UNRGROUND
One of the most touchg moments the exhibn is a simple vio stallatn that offers a rollg slishow of photographs ntributed by Gay Gotham visors. The stallatn draws spiratn om “The Gallery of Extraordary Portras, ” a 1928 exhibn celebratg terracial, gay, and artistic muni that artist Max Ewg stalled the walk- closet of his stud apartment. Gay Gotham: Art and Unrground Culture New York will be on display at the Mm of the Cy of New York through Feb.

“Gay Gotham” is divid to three major chronologil sectns: “Visible Subcultur” vers the early 1910s to the 1930s, and tak a look at how gay life flourished neighborhoods like Harlem and Greenwich Village. The first gallery opens wh artist and wrer Richard Bce Nugent, the most openly gay figure of the Harlem Renaissance.

Leonard Bernste, the most proment artist here, exemplifi the challeng gay artists faced post-World War II Ameri: a voted hband to Chilean actrs Felicia Cohn Montealegre and father of three children, Bernste never me out publicly wh fear of damagg his reer. On the oppose wall, an credible seri of polaroid-sized photographs taken by an anonymo photographer on the streets of New York Cy the '60s: boyiends huggg, a stylish gay wboy, some old-fashned cisg on 5th Avenue, and a man tight jeans and proud of his erectn dite the closet bubble is about to burst. Upstairs, “Out New York” vers the years leadg up to Stonewall until the mid-1990s, an era when anti-homophobia activism grew stronger; rpons the fight agast AIDS changed art forever; and the “we're here, we're queer, get ed to ” mentaly was born.
