my first 2 marv gaye albums were what's gog on and i want you - even though i always slightly preferred the former, there's still a lot to love here.

Early Marv Gaye, specifilly his work wh female -stars Tammi Terrell, Kim Wton, and Mary Wells is betiful and worth listeng to, perhaps bt wh a pilatn album such as 1970's Super Hs (wh s awome ver art).

UNRRATED: MARV GAYE - I WANT YOU

But Marv Gaye's body of work is domated by his work after his -star perd, and really domated by one album above all the rt--What's Gog On--and rightly so. There's nowhere else to direct anybody who wants to start listeng to Marv Gaye's work. It was a time when Gaye was really masterg a sound that rporated layers of his own vols (sometim wh almost operatic rults), some strgs, flut, and other orchtral stments, and some heavy e of early electronic/synthizer sounds.

Here, My Dear is a strong nceptual piece focg on the dissolutn of Gaye's marriage. Both Here, My Dear and I Want You are worth gettg by the Marv Gaye fahful, but for me neher live up to the trosepctive, creative brilliance of What's Gog On or the sensual fire of Let's Get It On. In some sense, Here, My Dear and I Want You sound a slight b formulaic: Gaye is fely the midst of a groove wh his "sound, " and so he's mg the male on the two albums, but they fall short of the granur of the earlier two.

The stmental "After the Dance" is one highlight for me--'s really a showse of Gaye's strength wh manipulatg early electronic mil stmentatn.

Midnight Love, wh 's eback h for Gaye, "Sexual Healg" is OK, but I feel 's not the work of a man his prime. The postmortem Dream of a Lifetime is a very tertg pilatn of overtly spirual and overtly sexual songs, and really pats an tertg bgraphil sketch of Gaye jt a few songs. I would recend that to big Gaye fans, as well.

As thor Michael Eric Dyson wrote his book, Mercy, Mercy Me: The Art, Lov, and Demons of Marv Gaye:.

After a three-year gap, Gaye emerged 1976 wh his 14th solo album, releasg at a time when the clubs were eher mblg to the sounds of punk or shakg unr the weight of bodi on the dis dancefloor. Not that Gaye red.

As s ver art, a 1971 patg by Ernie Barn, entled Sugar Shack, ma abundantly clear, there was no room for manver between Gaye’s erotic fantasi and the barely supprsed mands of his urg. Gaye had stggled to rerd a follow-up to Let’s Get It On, but then he met Leon Ware, songwrer for Michael Jackson, The Miracl, and Mnie Riperton, among many others, and a man who was then workg on his own sexually-charged excursns.

Fdg that Ware’s visn was the perfect channel for his own obssn wh Janis Hunter – spiratn for “Let’s Get It On” and, subsequently, the woman wh whom Gaye embarked on a long-term affair – the pair worked on the songs together, Gaye pourg his most tense sir to every groove. Yet s mix of quiet-storm soul, terstellar dis, and Gaye’s tritely multi-tracked, doo-wop-bted vols, laid the blueprt for the R&B and neo-soul stars of the 90s and 00s, among them D’Angelo, whose update on I Want You rulted the lennial masterpiece Voodoo.
